I’m a little jittery about the sound. Will WotW and Top Gun have remastered audio in Atmos? The earlier Mission Impossible movies kept the Dolby TrueHD sound.

The flipside of the War of the Worlds case makes it look like Atmos + dubs.

And, for the sake of completion:

Re: UHD release announcements

Hopefully when these come out in May, I'll be back to working and have some income to spend.

I would probably get these around the $20 range. Top Gun I only have on DVD, War of the Worlds I do have on BD and I don't have Days of Thunder on any format.

Target has Top Gun for $20 now, and Amazon has pricematched. (The other two are still $23 everywhere.)

Re: UHD release announcements

I have the Top Gun 3D one, which is good for maybe 2 decent 3D scenes. I’d much rather have a good remastered 4K with Atmos.

Thanks for the heads up. I got it from Target. Had about $6 and change left on a Target gift card and used my Red Card for an extra small discount. Came out to about $14 and change with free shipping. That works for me.

Let's see come May if this ships on time considering the world situation. Low priority obviously.

Re: UHD release announcements

I'm guessing we will finally get the remastered version of Top Gun on bluray since it shows the listing of a Dolby atmos track.. Finally!!! Dumb question on the digital copy. If you are using a digital code for Top Gun and you already have it in your collection will it be replaced with the remaster version?

Amazing that, at this stage of the game, we're still getting announcements that excite me like the old days.

Re: UHD release announcements

I can't tell you how many times I rented Rad back in the day. I'm sure it's probably a shit movie now and hasn't aged well so it won't be worth a purchase, but if it pops up on a streaming service I'll show it to my kiddos.

Yeah I have similar thoughts about it. I think I rented it back in 1987 as a kid and thought it was fun. But, that was me as a 14 year old in the 1980s. I don't know if an 1980s BMX movie would appeal to me now in my mid 40s. I'm sure I could watch it again, but owning it for like 20 something bucks. I don't know. One thing I recall is that former Olympic gymnast Bart Conner had a small part in it. He was trying to segue into acting at the time like Kurt Thomas and Mitch Gaylord.

I mean is anyone screaming for Gleaming the Cube and Thrashin as well?

Re: UHD release announcements

For what it's worth, I don't think a lot of VS releases end up on streaming services... especially the titles that are 'strictly limited'.
Tammy and the T-rex ended up on Shudder, but this one doesn't really belong there, and Tammy is still readily available for purchase.

Re: UHD release announcements

I've spotted a fair number on Prime Video (Demon Wind, Liquid Sky, Blood Beat, Jack Frost), but I have no idea what the overall percentage is.

The couple of times I have seen this, the picture quality is very inferior or a completely old transfer and is not the remastered versions they put out on their releases. But it could have just been the couple I saw. Maybe all aren't like that.

I think it comes down to the licensors. Whenever I see a VinSyn title that looks awful on Prime Video, I pretty much always see someone else listed as the studio. Nightbeast looks horrific, for instance, but I guess Troma held onto the digital rights, so they're not using the same master that Vinegar Syndrome used for their Blu-ray release. I have to admit that I haven't looked super-closely in general, though. I'm still trying to convince myself to shell out for the Blu-ray versions even though I could stream 'em for "free", and I guess I don't want to fall too in love with the streaming versions.

The idea is they're split to maximize bitrates for quality. I did some back of the napkin math for Lawrence, and 224 hours at 128 Mb/s would be just over 200 GB, or two 100 GB triple-layer UHD discs. Now, some of that space will be used for audio tracks and the like, but if they don't cheap out and just do two dual-layer 66 GB discs, it could have an impressive average video bitrate.
