re: Star Wars
This is essentially what I've done, in spite of how much Star Wars once meant to me. I will pay damn near any price if the OOT ever comes out, but otherwise, I'm done. I love the "I wouldn't buy it if it came with a gold-plated Rolls Royce" comment. About sums it up for me.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
The M. Falcon = Pristine OOT Prints (stuff dreams are made of)
Sydney Greenstreet = George Lucas
Peter Lorre = Desperate Fanboy
But who would Bogart and Mary Astor be?

re: Star Wars
I didn't see the film, so I can't comment on the quality of the piece, but I will say that it certainly hasn't done OOT fans any good that many of them act as immature as they do. There are larger issues about film and cultural preservation, but so many of them break it down "George Lucas did this me! Whaaa!" I have a lot of respect for Lucas as a person, especially after his recent philanthropic efforts, and fans should absolutely be more mature in how they state their viewpoint. Though to be far, their viewpoint also doesn't matter because it just doesn't hold economic weight given the massive mainstream popularity of the franchise relative to the small group of OOT fans. But that still doesn't justify calling Lucas names or making some of the comments that have been made about him. Although on Lucas' side, his endless problems with critics and fans have never entirely made sense to me. You're one of the richest people on earth, you changed culture as we know it, why do you care what a bunch of film critics or people online say about you? Enjoy it George. And again, the man just gave almost $4 billion to charity, in addition to a lot more he's given over the years. I really respect the man for that, very sincerely.

re: Star Wars
Oddly, Lucas' work towards bettering education and now his generous financial donation will have to battle within the American cultural arena which he has helped define. Star Wars inspires some to study astrophysics or become DIY inventors. Others end up thinking our world can be neatly divided into good vs. evil and violence is a reliable way to solve those problems. And then the really sharp ones learn that exclusive merchandising rights are pure gold!

re: Star Wars
From the rumor mill:
Last but not least, a particularly interesting topic of conversation among our industry friends at Comic-Con this year was the likelihood that the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy will finally be released on disc in high quality now that Disney is in the driver’s seat on the franchise. The expert consensus was that it’s quite possible. In fact, it’s almost unthinkable that it won’t happen. Disney has the best marketing machine in the business, and what better way to instantly spark fan enthusiasm and good feelings for the studio’s panned Episodes 7, 8 and 9 feature films than by giving fans what they’ve always wanted too: the unaltered originals on Blu-ray? Again, this is just somewhat informed speculation, so consider it Rumor Mill worthy. But every time jaded fans think they’re finally done with this franchise, the Empire finds new ways to pull them back in. The Saga continues, folks.

Wow, 7,8 & 9 are already panned? Where was the Internet outrage? I miss everything.

I think that it's likely that Disney will release the original, non-SE trilogy as long as 1) they have good transfers/original materials to work from, and 2) they aren't contractually barred from doing so (ie, Lucas included a clause in the contract that prevents its release).

re: Star Wars
Just release two Blade Runner like sets. One for the prequels with all the changes and the 3D versions and a original trilogy set with the originals and all of George's shitty special editions.

It'd be up to Disney to remaster it, though, so who knows how long that would take. I can't see them putting out a subpar product.

It may not have been "George raped my childhood with the SEs/prequels" type of outrage, but Disney has a long slog ahead of them making sure people don't automatically write off the sequels as being overly kiddiefied.
So, yes, I have to give this one a little credit. I've said for a while that there's no way Disney would drop 4 billion big ones on a franchise and leave *anything* behind. And Lucas may have had a moment where he realized he'd rather wash his hands of it all and let whatever happens, happen. It seems very likely to use something like this kind of release to build goodwill with the fans and win over the detractors.

Seriously? Use one of those wayback sites and check out all the quick photoshops people did putting Mickey Mouse ears on the Death Star and such immediately after the deal was announced last fall (jeez, has already been that long? I can still remember getting the news alert on my mobile, and just kinda wandering the office in a daze for a few minutes, waiting for somebody to yell April Fools!)
