re: Star Wars

Didn't buy the existing Blu-rays, and I'm not even tempted to. I have the DVD set with the laserdisc non-anamorphic transfers of the OOT, and I barely even watch those. I've seen the OT so many times that I could probably rattle them all off by heart. I'd much rather watch Star Trek at this point.

Although I would buy a set that contained a remastered HD OOT, even if that meant getting the shitty altered editions and/or the prequels.

re: Star Wars

I bought the OT 3 disk BluRay set (It was on sale at Best Buy). For some reason, the SE changes to Star Wars and Empire don't bother me that much (although I would still prefer the OOT anyday of the week). As for Return of the Jedi, Lucas has totally ruined an already flawed movie and I refuse to watch the SE in any form.

There are so many shit changes in Jedi now:
-Horrendous new song that makes me wonder if Jabba's palace was the Copacabana?

-The new Vader scream before he throws The Emperor to his death is just awful

-And the ultimate change that forever ruined Jedi was the addition of Hayden Christenson in the force ghost scene. I am one of those people who don't bitch about the PT movies because you can take em or leave em, but when the PT actors start invading the OT movies, then I have had enough.

-And many never noticed that in the OOT version, Luke gives a quick wink to the force ghosts as he walks away with Leia. For some reason, they took that out of the SE???? That is the shit that drives you crazy, as I don't even think they realized they edited out a nice little moment from the OOT version!

At this point, the Star Wars Saga is 2 movies for me (Star Wars and Empire), and if Lucas ever releases the OOT on BluRay fully remastered, I will watch Jedi again like I did before 1997.

re: Star Wars

I haven't purchased a copy of the original trilogy since I bought the Widescreen SE VHS set in '97. While some of the changes don't bother me that much, the ones that do infuriate me to the point that the movies are unwatchable. Throw in the totally f'd up color timing and general shoddiness of the Lowry masters and I can't imagine ever owning the BDs. I don't know what the current set goes for these days, but it would have to be no more than 25 bucks for me to even consider it, and that's only so that I could see the deleted scenes and have a clear(er) conscience when watching the infinitely superior fan-made versions out there.

re: Star Wars

I still haven't bought the BDs of the first three movies. I actually sold my old DVD set for a hundred bucks on eBay (awhile back) that had the non-anamorphic trilogy since I have downloaded the much superior aforementioned bootlegs.

I wouldn't mind some official releases of the OT but the older I get, the lack of caring increases.

Disney paid $4 billion for the franchise, I think they can also afford to buy back the rights from FOX.

Ditto. Lame add-ins are one thing, but compromising the emotional apex of the series just to callback to a scene everyone hated from Ep III was a big slap in the face.

re: Star Wars

Good freaking Jeebus, what's all the fuss? The only Star Wars I've heard of is a nice little cult film made back in the 70's. I finally got a copy a few years back (it included some joke disc where some dweeb with a PC tried to insert some extra junk in the movie and I threw that out). It's not anamorphic but when I zoom it on my TV it's still pretty decent.
AFIAK, there were never any sequels, TV, books, comics, etc. Good thing too, probably would have ruined it. It's fine left just as it is.

I refuse to watch anything other than the Director/Producer cuts. Lapti Nek would make a great bonus feature, though.

If you refuse to buy the prequel movies on blu-ray than you hate star wars.

Episode 1 has never looked and sounded so good!

Except it's been absolutely proven that you can polish a turn.

Episode one has never been a turd though.

re: Star Wars

The prequels really aren't that awful. There's tons of truly bad movies out there that well and truly stink out loud, but will often get a pass because they're called "popcorn" movies but the PT gets judged harsher because the OT set the bar so high (although, to be fair, they're really not "high art" themselves, they just happened to hit cinema at the right time).

The prequels have their problems - the story could have been focused tighter on the Clone Wars, showing Anakin's exploits and all three of them (and even ROTJ if you want to think big), could all use at least one more pass through the editing bay to be tightened up. But they are by no means terrible.

The prequels are really awful when you consider they are set in one of the richest mythologies ever created. When I first heard the "Clone Wars" mentioned, I didn't envision we would see Darth Vader as a goofy child and lovestruck teen.

re: Star Wars

^^ I'll agree with you about episodes II and III, they're certainly not great but they're hardly the worst movies ever made. Episode I, on the other hand, is truly a terrible movie. Every decision Lucas made was the wrong one.

"The Clone Wars" is the worst they to happen to Star Wars. Lucas got this silly clone wars idea stuck in his head (from a throwaway line in episode IV) and had no idea how to make it work on the screen. He then proceeded to make 4 feature length movies and 2 TV series about the Clone Wars and when all was said and done STILL had no idea how to fully realize his concept!

Yes, yes they are.

This isn't true, at least for me. I'd give the PT a pass if they managed to be entertaining on even a "popcorn" level, but they don't even reach that for me. There are tons of crappier films being released that I dislike more than the PT, but that doesn't make the PT good.

Hell, even the box-office bomb John Carter was more entertaining than the PT.

Have you even watched any of the Clone Wars material? Both Genndy Tartovsky's mini-series and the CG animated, five season long series are great explorations and expansions of the SW universe.

The Clone Wars may not have fit our preconceived notions of what would happen (Jedi fighting eeevviiiilll clones) but twisting those kinds of ideas upside down is the best kind of storytelling. I've been catching up with the CW series on DVD, and there's all kinds of facets of that galaxy far, far away they've been touching on and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

In fact, the worst mistake Lucas made with regards to the Clone Wars is not featuring them more prominently in the movies. Making one or two pivotal battles the focus of Episode II, where we see Anakin having to make morally grey decisions, would have done wonders for his character development.

re: Star Wars

Did You Know?: 2002 was the only year ever when a Star Wars and a Star Trek movie were both released?

That's right Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Trek: Nemesis came out the same year--and they both sucked beyond the telling.
