Fucking really??

You could have sent me a PM if you were looking to completely waste 90 bucks. I could have easily helped you achieve that goal...

re: Star Wars

hmmm. Here are actual sales numbers. Not some dumb units sold per 100 number.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118043276

Consumers were willing to shell out top dollar for the complete "Star Wars" franchise, which bowed on Blu-ray for the first time this week, with the collection selling more than 1 million units to break records for the high-definition homevideo format.
The nine-disc set generated more than $84 million from worldwide sales, with $38 million collected in the U.S. alone, from 515,000 units in North America. On average, the collection is priced at $79.99.

The sales figures made "Star Wars: The Complete Saga" the No. 1 pre-order and catalog title since the launch of Blu-ray in 2006.

re: Star Wars

Seeing bitter nerds trying to spin an $80 catalog box set selling 65% as many copies as a $20 new release in half the time as a failure is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen on this forum.

You guys did it! Yay!

re: Star Wars

The LOTR EEs sold almost 600,000 copies first week. X-Men sold around 825,000 last week. If you go with a conservative estimate of a 50% sales drop in week two, then you can estimate SW sold around 545,000 copies.

EDIT: Started this post before the above post.

Nope, LOTR EE only sold around 300,000 on it's first week. Linky link: http://www.the-numbers.com/interacti...hp?newsID=6378

Like I said #1 on one week does not necessarily mean better than a #3 title for another week

Releasing this thing on a Friday was a huge mistake*

I'm not trying to argue, but that article says Sucker Punch the same week had 49% of total sales in Blu, while the figures I pulled from said 61%.

Either way, the SW set sold well. I retract my earlier assumptions.

Star Wars is a such a popular series that spans generations of fans, no movie, DVD, Bluray should ever be #2.
Star Wars has it's own Manifest Destiny now?

I think this is just another way to belittle Luca$. If it had debuted at #1, we would be hearing about how the mindless sheeple buying it over and over again. Damned it you do, damned if you don't.

re: Star Wars

Everything I've seen indicates that a Nielsen week is Mon-Sun. I so wanted to find that it was the traditional Sun-Sat week because that would have made the SW sales even more impressive but even so you're looking at 3 days vs. Thor's 6 when you're comparing figures.

Doubling the SW sales figures to estimate 6-day sales would be the epitome of stupid internet napkin math but still, the fact that this $80-90 box set sold 65% as many copies in only 50% of the time is all that needs to be said.

Maybe one of the mods can digitally "improve" the last two pages of this thread to make it look like a lot of people didn't have it completely wrong re: this title's sales performance.

The moral of the story? Memes and 1-star Amazon reviews had little to no effect on this thing.

re: Star Wars

deadline.com:
Looks like that boycott called by hardcore fans didn’t amount to much. Nor were buyers perturbed by some very controversial changes in the 9-disc Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga with 40 hours of extras. Instead, the Complete Saga on Blu-ray release broke global sales records with 1 million units sold and $84 million filling cash registers. It quickly becomes the #1 pre-order and #1 catalog title since the launch of the high-definition format. Needless to say, Lucasfilm Ltd and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are high-fiving today’s announcement that Star Wars is the bestselling catalog Blu-ray Disc of all time, including 515,000 units sold in North America in its first week alone. This worldwide consumer spend included $38 million in North America – unprecedented for a 9-disc Blu-ray collection at a premium price

Pretty impressive numbers. Hopefully this will speed up an Indiana Jones release.

Hey, I'll be the first to congratulate Mr. Lucas on the success of the BluRay sales last week. To me this is like an election, you fight like hell for your side to be heard, but when the results come out and you lose, you take it like a man. What can you do, the Star Wars fanbase is so big and so diverse, the numbers are astounding sometimes.

Now I will go into hiding on Tatooine for the next 20 years waiting for A New Hope to help defeat the Evil Empire

And it was released on Friday, not with the rest of the Tuesday releases. So it had only 3 days worth of sales on that chart, not 6 like the other stuff that came out that week.

re: Star Wars

in 2004 VHS was pretty much extinct.. and DVD was very widespread and popular. So it isn't surprising that the dvd sales were huge.

this is 2011 and dvd is still larger than blu-ray by a long shot.. so it's not surprising that the blu-ray didn't perform like it's dvd release 7 years prior.

I thought by looking at the numbers, and sheer copies still left at the store, this release did very well!

Look at those numbers again after I tell you that there are 40+ million BD Players in homes in the USA.

re: Star Wars

I think you have to let Lucas have his way with Star Wars. It's really all he has. He was just smart enough to realize that and capitalize on it. His friends like Spielberg and Coppola have a body of work, he just has this. I think it is a shame that he can't put out the originals but he does seem like a spiteful little guy, as per the ex wife thing. He's just the same guy he always was but now with a ton of money and a golden goose.

I remember back in the 80s whenever I heard the scream of a TIE fighter on a tv commercial it always gave me a thrill. I took my kids to all 3 movies when they were rereleased. Now, after the prequels and all the other baggage, I no longer really care. As for my kids, Harry Potter or LOTR are much more important to them. I remember thinking what a great idea it would be for him to do a trilogy of trilogies, now I would rather he just stop.

This is a good point. The wait to see Star Wars on DVD was much longer, and it was more of an upgrade to see it jump from VHS to DVD than from DVD to Blu.

re: Star Wars

Leave us not forget that despite its only having been available in stores for 3 days (where it hasn't exactly been flying off shelves), these sets had been available for pre-order for MONTHS. These sales figures do not represent the slam dunk that this release should have been. Despite the past year of hype and all the pro-Lucas spin, "Star Wars" on Blu-ray is characterized by mediocrity, missed opportunities, greed, disappointment, and outright failure.
