Pretty soon Criterion will be releasing Wes Anderson's home movies - including his vacation trip to Europe, the time he recorded his monster dump, and all the accidental footage recorded from his iPhone in his back pocket.

I'd buy that as long as it all got the standard CC treatment.

Can't wait to see the whimsical hand-drawn cover art on the case.

Restoration by Janus Films may mean a Criterion release?

I've loved (most of) Wes Anderson's films since Bottle Rocket, but I don't understand all the obsessive love and hate of him.

Honestly, while I love Criterion, for the most part, I most looked forward to their work on older and more obscure films where the prints need a little TLC.

In the case of current films being released on blu-ray as their first home video releases, I don't usually find that there's a night & day difference in the picture and audio quality between a Criterion and a non-Criterion release. As long as the studio puts the same caliber of extras into the releases as Criterion I don't care if it's a Criterion release or not.

usually, but I found it interesting that Janus Films was credited on a recent screening of Ridley Scott's Alien - that's a bluray that doesn't need another version as it has pretty much everything but the kitchen sink.

Popular recent titles like the Wes Anderson films help Criterion pay the bills so that they can continue to restore older and more obscure films as well.

I would love to see it released again- this time without the revisionist teal & orange color grading.
But I'm likely in an extreme minority on that.

It's a good minority, though. Pass me a life vest and an oar, would you?

I'm pretty sure A Hard Days Night has been all but confirmed to be coming from Criterion within the next year (see: New Year drawing, other random internet sources that I can't be bothered to look up/link to).

He said in an interview once that his childhood super 8 films were stolen from his car, and, with hindsight, he added, he was kind of glad. But maybe they will show up on bootleg....

you know I didn't cut out the Time Out New York ad for the screening but it's also discussed here:

Alien: 30th anniversary print (+ Criterion?)

Film Forum screened it in 2009.

on a side note - Landmark E Street is showing the DCP on February 28 / March 1 (midnight screenings) - they have an official one-sheet for the screening, but a quick look I didn't notice a Janus Films logo (I'll look again)

I might be completely off with this, but from my understanding, while the fact that Janus has secured theatrical rights to a film oftentimes points to a Criterion release, it's far from a guarantee. I think it's pretty easy to assume that Alien would be one of those instances.

Criterion Pictures has nothing to do with The Criterion Collection.

Included in Deepdiscount's Suspense Sale is Criterion's Thief for 19.99 (for those that don't want to wait for B&N's next sale). They do require an order of $25 for free shipping so you may need to find something else. I know DD has a poor rep on here due to past issues but I've placed 10 or so orders with them in the last few months and all have been handled perfectly.

What exactly is the relationship between Janus and Criterion? Is Criterion simply a branch of theirs, or are they independent and unto themselves?

I'm sure someone else can enlighten us with a more detailed explanation but I did find this little tidbit:

"Janus has a close relationship with The Criterion Collection regarding the release of its films on DVD and is still an active theatrical distributor."

I've not seen any film of theirs not get a DVD/bluray release from Criterion - in a related comment, Janus Film did (quasi) confirm that a Criterion release is eminent of the 4K restoration of THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

Janus films and Criterion Collection are the same company.

Janus is a front used to take advantage of various taxation loopholes, as well as a way to easier split up Criterion's multiple off-shore banking accounts.

Got Thief, the colors are different which was a bit jarring but I'm happy that it is the director's cut and that it sounds great.

Can't stand that Fantastic Mr. Fox release is being released in a digipak instead of a standard case like all of the other Wes Anderson Criterions...
