Rumor is that the 6 hour cut of Tree Life is being included. I think people were dicking around, so don't know if that's even possibility with Malick, but we'll see what the final package contains.

I don't think it is 6 hours, but it is definitely going to be a new, longer cut. I met Malick in fall 2016 and asked him about it. He confirmed it was being worked on.

Sean Penn did once complain about how most of his material was cut out & i think one of the editors once said that 'there could be an entire feature length film featuring the Sean Penn character.

Ugh. I guess 3 BD releases isn't enough, so Criterion's gotta add a 4th.

Broken record time... the current BDs transfers are fantastic and one of the releases has a decent amount of supplements. So many films without a BD release they could be doing instead.

Hell, at least start releasing on UHD-BD so there's something new to offer.

Are they trying to get the average consumer to buy these more "mainstream" releases? Because I don't see the average consumer who buys BDs (and that's relatively small nowadays) spending $25.99 on a Criterion BD of NCFOM when the regular BD goes for $5.99 (using Amazon prices).

How many extra sales will they get from Criterion fans (which is a pretty small market to begin with) who are looking for a very minor "upgrade" from the current BDs in comparison to releasing something else that doesn't currently have a BD?

I think that there are a couple of things that are at work in this instance.

NCFOM is a Miramax release. Disney has been licensing out tons of stuff in the last few years, with Mill Creek getting a whole lot of Touchstone titles and Echo Bridge getting a bunch of Miramax titles. For those companies to be able to afford those films, the licensing rights must be going at fire-sale prices. I have a feeling that Lionsgate's license for NCFOM is up, and Criterion got the rights for a song.

Now add to that the fact that there is a certain contingent of Criterion customers, both individuals and institutions, that buy every release that Criterion puts out. I don't know how many of these hard-core Criterion junkies there are, but my guess would be that Criterion can count on anything they release to automatically sell at least 3-4,000 copies.

Put those two together, and Criterion may well have an automatic profit-generator in NCFOM. Any additional sales outside of their guaranteed customer base would be gravy.

That's my take on the situation. Criterion has been in the business long enough to have figured out how to maximize their profits, and I certainly can't blame them for releasing a sure thing. At least NCFOM fits snugly into the collection, unlike other films that were much more blatant cash grabs.

If every Wes Anderson film gets a mainstream release and a Criterion release, then I have no problem with NCFOM.

If Criterion gets the Miramax library it could be a goldmine for them. Dozens of films that would fit comfortably into the collection.

I agree they should grab what they can, but if Miramax films are up for grabs - then they'll have access to so many more films that would be considered decent sellers AND which aren't out on BD (or the current release is sub-par). Down the road they could tackle NCFOM if/when they jump on UHD-BD.

But I guess they understand their hardcore customers more than I do. People will spend their money however they want to.

Simply slapping a spine number on a release doesn't get me to automatically open up my wallet.

I haven't checked out my copy for a while, but I remember someone on here was very disappointed with the image quality of the current disc. It might be more of an upgrade than we realize.

Another point to consider is that Criterion already has a relationship with the Coens from their work on Blood Simple and Inside Llewyn Davis. That means it probably won't be too much trouble to get the directors to contribute some new interviews. As opposed to picking some other Miramax title for which the filmmakers may not be easily available.

Releasing No Country now may simply be an excuse for Criterion to continue their working relationship with the Coens, hoping to parlay that into future work on some of their other movies that might be considered Criterion-worthy.

That’s what I was thinking too. It seems like Criterion has certain directors they like to work with after they’ve established a relationship. I’m sure if they’re able to obtain the rights to films especially when they’re by directors like the Coen Bros. who have a large fanbase they don’t turn down the opportunity.
