Glad to see the Police Story set has at least a couple of unique features (the Grady Hendrix and Peking Opera pieces). Happy to have that set alongside the UK editions, which (so far, anyway) offer considerably more, including THREE cuts of each film (albeit the HK cut of Part 2 is HD in the Criterion set, SD in the Eureka). Eager to see what else Criterion offers for this pair.

Got my Bergman box today, 6 weeks sooner than promised - very impressive set indeed! I expect to be snowed in this holiday weekend and it'll be a perfect time to dive in!

I mentioned this on the thread in the movie forum, but I'll be purchasing the Police Story set. Hopefully, this is the beginning of Criterion releasing more HK cinema in their collection.

I don't even think that Eureka is planning in releasing some of Woo's films this year. I'm jealous of the fact that Eureka will be releasing some great Sammo Hung movies but personally, the cost is too prohibitive for me to purchase them.

In for Jackie Chan, Kazan and both Jarmusch. Expensive, but satisfying month.

One film specifically: THE MISSION

Regardless of all the other great ones in his filmography, before and after, that's the one that really boosted his name beyond Hong Kong and Hong Kong fan circles, mostly via a well-received performance on the festival circuit. His two earlier 1999 pictures (WHERE A GOOD MAN GOES and, to a lesser extent RUNNING OUT OF TIME) as well as his sole 1998 picture, the excellent A HERO NEVER DIES all represent the solidification of his French-noir visual style after years of often excellent but generally inconsistent fare, which to me would make it a prime candidate for Criterion.

It's been criminally treated on home video up to now.

Is Criterion ever going to fix the "My Criterion" section of their website (where it used to show all the titles you own)? Seems like it's been down for a year now (it probably hasn't been that long, but it seems like it).

Brian T 01-18-19 08:29 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It certainly feels like that long. You'd think with all the things Criterion does right with their website and its ease of use, that reconfiguring how our "collections" display to us wouldn't take the better part of a year.

While I'd love to see them re-release Hard Boiled and The Killer, I would be in heaven if they released Bullet in the Head (or Bullet to the Head, can't remember the exact title)...I've wanted to watch that for years and I don't think it's ever gotten a decent North American release...

The Mission is an awesome movie. Unfortunately, the DVD I have is just awful. In order to hear anything, you really have to crank the volume, and it looks like the subtitles were "burnt" onto the actual print, so there's this weird "ghosting" effect as you watch the movie, which is very distracting...I've purposely put off re-watching it because I want to wait til it has a decent Blu-Ray release...

Yeah, Bullet in the Head is good. But I don’t see any more Woo movies getting the Criterion treatment. But since they keep upgrading their DVD stuff, I’m hoping we’ll see Woo’s stuff re-released with some good restorations.

I love BULLET IN THE HEAD in all its allegorical madness, but it was something of a box-office failure despite its epic scope, so while it may not be Criterion-worthy, it's long overdue for proper treatment on another label. The only other Woo movie that truly deserves Criterion treatment is A BETTER TOMORROW. That's a quintessential Hong Kong movie, and inarguably a more important one than either THE KILLER or HARD BOILED, and there are many ways in which it can be contextualized with supplements both vintage and new, and with more appropriate "experts" than we've usually been given over the years. KILLER and HARD BOILED are perhaps more polished because they came later, but ABT was one of the key turning points of Hong Kong cinema and laid down the gauntlet for a lot of the city's filmmakers after that (one they happily took up and ran in every direction with, for better or worse).

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

About eight months ago, we relaunched this website with a brand-new, mobile-friendly design, smoother e-commerce functionality, and a richer publishing environment for the Current. We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback about the new site, along with a fair number of helpful critiques, feature requests, and suggestions for improvements. After the new site survived its first flash sale in October, we turned our attention to the inbox, and frequent visitors to Criterion.com may already have noticed some little changes taking effect over the past few days.

First off, we’ve made some changes to the navigation bar, which pops up when you click on the three lines at the top right of any page on the site. We’ve added links to each section of our shop page, and we’ve listed out some of the most popular categories on the Current, making it easier for you to navigate to what you’re looking for.

Some customers had trouble figuring out how to sign in and out of the site (it wasn’t that easy!), so we’ve added a convenient My Criterion icon to the top navigation (it looks like a little person). There you’ll find your account information, orders, wish list, and place to log in and out. Very soon you’ll also find “My Collection” there. Restoring the My Collection feature that allows users to track the Criterion editions they own was by far the top request from longtime customers. We are happy to report that the My Collection feature should be back online in the next few weeks, and any Criterion.com purchases you’ve made during the time My Criterion has been inactive should be reflected in your list.

What we won’t be restoring are the custom list features. After doing a deep dive into how much activity there was in the custom lists, the amount of spam and bot activity they invited, and the moderation they required, we struggled to justify bringing them back. At their best, the lists opened up new pathways in the collection and served a social function, but in the end we decided to leave that activity to other platforms, like Letterboxd, that are focused on social sharing, reviewing, and list-making. If you would like copies of your custom lists for your records, you can write to Jon Mulvaney ([email protected]) at any time and we will make arrangements.

Finally, we are retooling the search function of our site. The new search should be much snappier, and once it goes live you should have an easier time finding what you need on the site, navigating back to your search results, and clearly identifying which links lead to films and which lead to articles in the Current. Look for these and other changes to appear over the course of the month of February.

My Brilliant Career is the last announced spine at 973.

Should get to spine #1000 in a few months. DVD Spine #1 was released in 1999!

Anyone have any guess as to what title would be a good pick?

I would say Anne of the Thousand Days, but Twilight Time just put that out.

The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse, maybe?

Also a Flash sale could be coming today...or within the next two weeks.

It would make sense given Criterion's relationship with Lynch, but it seems like a big waste. In addition to being a flat-out terrible movie, Inland Empire was shot on ultra-crappy standard-def video and there's nothing Criterion (or anyone else) can do to make it look watchable.

I hope not. If they concentrate on Inland Empire as their next Lynch release, that'll probably mean Lost Highway is a long way off.

Criterion is a niche and 4K is a niche. They're not the kind of niches that work together.

I could only see it working if they did one of those partnerships with a major studio on a major title and it was in a combo pack (but then you'd have people complaining about the combo packs...)
