If you like Bergman, and to a lesser extent Antonioni - then the odds are in your favour of liking Tarkovsky. Otherwise, just stream/rent/download it first.

Which is really the approach everyone should take nowadays. There's really little reason to blind-buy anything today.

Yeah, thanks. Not big into those movies...

That restoration looks like it will be like watching the film for the first time. There's so much detail that the current DVD leaves in a blurry haze.

One of the preeminent intellectual films, and concurrently visually splendorous and austere, but as slow as molasses and very long. Yes, arty to the nth degree. It's the pinnacle of Tarkovsky's oeuvre and I find it an enrapturing experience, but I'm sure many viewers are bored to tears. Not a good candidate for a blind buy.

Having said that, I already own the old DVD and will not be buying this new release.

If you can make it through this without fast forwarding, then maybe.

Since B&N and coupons during Criterions sales don't mix like they used to, I'll just wait for the next Criterion website flash sale in the fall/winter time frame. Usually 3 will get you free shipping and I've already got Straw Dogs and Stalker on my list. Surely by then, another title will be released that I want. Patience, patience.

Also, there's far less risk of a new title going out of print than there used to be.

I'd be pissed if that is the case. I don't see the need since it is already part of the great bluray box set. I'd much rather one of this other films that need an upgrade... like The Elephant Man. Seems like a waste... if true.

or Lost Highway. grumble grumble...

But... I can see the desire to have a new FWWM. I haven't played the disc from the box set in awhile, but I seem to recall it having lip sync issues, at least on my Oppo. If that's fixed, I'd totally double-dip.

There's a pretty good EM blu in The UK, put out by Studio Canal, that's region-free.

So many great films without a Blu-Ray, and once again Criterion feels the need to work on something that has a decent release already.

Also, has Criterion made any mention of supporting UHD-BD? Or are they going to just sit this one out?

The remastered 4K edition Studio Canal released isn't bad at all if you're interested.

I feel the same way about their Wes Anderson releases.
I know, they're money makers, blah ,blah, blah, etc, etc.....
Just my lousy opinion.

If Fire Walk With Me is true, I would maybe consider if it had some amazing extras, but more than likely, I'll pass.

I get why they're doing it, though. It's sure to be one of their biggest money makers. I would prefer another Lynch film to be up next, but the timing is better for Twin Peaks.

Hmm, I'm one who would actually buy FWWM if Criterion released it. I have the Gold Box DVD set of Twin Peaks and have never really cared to upgrade it to the Blu-ray set that included the movie.

I wonder if I'm in the majority or minority of Twin Peaks fans who never upgraded?

The Blu-rays are a huge upgrade in picture quality over the DVDs, and Fire Walk With Me includes the famous deleted scenes that fans had begged for over 20 years to see, all fully remastered to the same quality as the movie.

You are missing out.

GoldenJCJ 04-28-17 10:07 PM

^ shit. Don't tempt me, man. Especially with a possible FWWM criterion coming.

Ringmaster 04-28-17 11:53 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'm the biggest Twin Peaks fan I know but FWWM shouldn't get a release over Lost Highway, Straight Story, Elephant Man, and Wild at Heart. Plus FWWM is too recent of a title for an upgrade and Criterion is not going to eclipse "The Missing Pieces" in the extras department.

And GoldenJCJ, pick up the Twin Peaks box set (make sure it's the 10 disc version). You won't regret it.

I'd love to get a BD release of The Straight Story. It doesn't even have to be a Criterion... it would be cheaper even if it was barebones (extras do nothing for me anyway). Such a great film.

I'm betting FWWM is going to be paired up with David Lynch: The Art Life.

The Straight Story was released on Blu-ray in Japan, Region A. Unfortunately, it's an ancient video transfer.

Maybe the artist is not-so-subtlety hoping his coworkers will nickname him "T-bone".

Unfortunately he had a copy of this sitting on his desk:

Even if it were a spectacular release, after shipping it would cost me roughly $78 CAD to purchase from Japan. Nevermind that there's a chance I could get dinged with Canadian duties adding another $10+ to the overall cost.

For that price, I'd expect the David Lynch Collection.

I'd totally buy a Criterion release of The Straight Story.

As for Fire Walk With Me - what are the odds of a version with the deleted scenes added in?

None. Lynch doesn't believe in Director's Cuts or alternate versions of movies. He has had the right of final cut written into all of his contracts from Blue Velvet forward and won't work without it. The theatrical release of the movie is his intended version.

Lynch has described the deleted scenes to Fire Walk With Me as windows into what else was happening around town at the time of the movie. He's OK with people watching them as their own thing, but doesn't want them incorporated into the movie itself.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The complete TP blu set goes for just a few dollars more than a standard Criterion blu, which would be movie only. It really makes no sense for anyone to buy a Criterion edition of just the FWWM blu, when they can have the whole series for just a couple dollars more.

Dan 05-01-17 12:43 PM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

That's it. I'm convinced that the Fire Wok With Meat hint was just a red herring, and they're actually going to release Lost Highway instead! :D

(but probably not...)

Perhaps Panic Room may be released in the future? It's the only Fincher film not yet released on Blu-ray.

I don't know how long they've been doing it for, but it's cool that they're doing art on the inside as well. I just looked at Punch-Drunk Love and realized they have a still on the inside of the case.
