If I was drafting a list of the 50 best films of the 90's, Gummo would be top 5.

My 2018 release dream is some UHD upgrades of existing Collection titles. Let's start with large format stuff like Playtime.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Honestly, I'm not sure that Criterion is even interested in UHD. The primary benefit of the format is not the resolution increase (which isn't terribly noticeable on typical screen sizes), but HDR. Re-grading old movies into HDR when they weren't photographed with that intention has the stench of revisionism, which Criterion generally (not always, but generally) shies away from.

Tell me their recent Barry Lyndon release wouldn't look glorious! |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The Criterion Collection has announced that it will add four new titles to its Blu-ray catalog in April: Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides (1999), Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1995), Sergei Parajanov's The Color of Pomegranates (1969), and Leo McCarey's The Awful Truth (1937). |

Every month that offers nothing I want, like April here, is another month for me to catch up on my extensive backlog.
And no money out of pocket. Win-Win. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The Virgin Suicides and Dead Man for sure.

Dollar Gustaf Molander 1938 Ingrid Bergman excels as the frustrated spouse of a busy industrialist with conservative views about how his wife should behave in public, in this sparkling Swedish take on screwball comedy that touches on dark themes. Intermezzo Gustaf Molander 1936 This gorgeous romantic confection, which catalogs a doomed love affair between a married violin virtuoso and a young pianist, is graced by a leading performance by Ingrid Bergman (her first), in a role created especially for her. Walpurgis Night Gustaf Edgren 1935 Lena (Ingrid Bergman) is in love with her married boss, Johan, in this romantic drama that takes Sweden’s declining birth rate as a backdrop and stirred up controversy with its depiction of abortion. A Woman’s Face Gustaf Molander 1938 In this dramatic thriller, Ingrid Bergman takes on an uncharacteristically vicious role as Anna, a bitter, nefarious blackmailer with a disfigured face. June Night Per Lindberg 1940 Both a grim exposé of sexual politics and a sensual romance, June Night features a remarkably intense performance from Bergman as a woman weighed down by a secret. |

Out of those, only Awful Truth for me - I have an old dvd of it, but a Criterion blu-ray would be a worthwhile upgrade.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I have a friend that has the 4K version from VUDU (UHD) and says that it does look and sound phenomenal for a Digital HD. I'm sure it's sourced from whatever Criterion has. No special features, though.

My friend said the same thing a while back! Of course that friend was me.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
As much as I want an awesome picture upgrade for SotL, I'm more looking forward to having what is hopefully a better sound experience. Of all the DVD's I've ownen of this the movie, only the Criterion DVD sounded right. But given the non-anamorphic disc, it had the worst picture option and very few features. This is hopefully, finally, the everything in one package we should have got long ago.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I saw a used copy of By Brakhage today at the used shop priced at only $4.99. Is it worth getting the old DVD version at that price?

Out of curiosity, is anyone on here a member of Filmstruck? I'm wondering how the video quality is compared to their disc releases?
I want to watch those Godzilla movies NOW lol. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
That’s a great clue. But an odd addition to the collection. A lot of big commercial releases this year. Hopefully that is good for them financially.

At least the current Bull Durham BD is almost 8 years old with a very unimpressive transfer (according to many reviews).
I can understand Criterion releasing this. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Personally I saw it as a ham right away. It was the boulder that took me a long time. I was thinking "Rock"+ "Ham" wondering what movie would have to do with something like Rockham.
Could be wrong, but Bull Durham definitely seems to fit their recent focus on movies that are though of as classics as well as box office favorites. |

Which would be great given the B&N "sale" is pretty much dead for Criterions and the Criterion site sales are very infrequent. |
