La Llorona is a nice surprise coming from Criterion.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
As much as I love NOTLD, is it really going to be much of an upgrade in 4K? Especially considering I already have the Criterion BD.

Disappointed that they didn't use the classic Arsenic and Old Lace one-sheet for their cover :

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I love that new (and old) Arsenic and Old Lace artwork
Without HDR or DV, I’ll probably pass on the UHD of Night Of The Living Dead. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I already have The Night Of The Living Dead on Criterion BD. I am getting the BD for Lost Highway, the Kino is whitespecapalooza.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I wonder if they would ever do Lynch's The Straight Story. That's about my speed as far as Lynch is concerned (plus Dune).
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Disney owns the US rights to The Straight Story so probably not a chance in hell. Dune just had a 4K and BD release from Arrow that are still in print.

On a related note, the Good Burger steel book is coming out this week.

Agreed. My guess is that The Straight Story is the Lynch film for those who don't share his particular sensibility. I am one of those. The acclaim for his films perplexes me, but I do love The Straight Story.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I don't buy a lot of Criterion titles, but I'm excited about Arsenic and Old Lace. I'll definitely be picking it up.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Wow, Eve’s Bayou! Finally getting some deserved love. I hope Kasi Lemmons has some big contributions to this release.

I saw "CURE" and got excited thinking they were going to release The Cure in Orange and/or Show.
:( |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I know Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (1997) has been available overseas on BD for a bit but I'm still very excited about the announcement.
La Llorona (2019) is a fantastic announcement too! |

I am so excited for Eve's Bayou and Arsenic & Old Lace. The former includes both versions of the film and the original (and very honest) commentary track.

Busting out my Europe Rolodex right now. Who can't turn down a nearly guaranteed arrival of broken stuff that comes at a high price.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure.
About fucking time. I can finally upgrade the 18 year old DVD from Home Vision Entertainment. Now if we can only have Seance and Charisma. |

Picked that up a few years back (fairly cheap on Amazon marketplace, too) to replace a VCD, of all things! It's a pretty good release. In terms of supplements, it's seems like Criterion's are basically on balance with Eureka's in terms of what a viewer will get out of them. Eureka also put out a couple of his other films – CREEPY and JOURNEY TO THE SHORE, but neither are as essential as CURE (or CHARISMA, or KAIRO, the latter of which Arrow has). |

I saw that and it sucks. I know that the set is not cheap and you would think they would have done a better job with it and with the packaging.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Have any of you heard if Janus have acquired the rights for Sammo Hung Eastern Condors? There’s a Twitter account that posted this information but I’m sceptical if they are legit or not.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
That Twitter account is, apparently, trash.
However, the 'source' of that info is someone on the criterion forums. No idea if that person is reliable or not, but hopefully it turns out to be true. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Thanks! I hope the news is true too.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I never understood Eureka squeezing EASTERN CONDORS into a three pack with a couple of his period martial arts films from a decade earlier. Not that that isn't a nice set, but EASTERN CONDORS deserved a standalone release. Not sure it's Criterion-grade 'important', though, but I'd bite anyway.

Olivier Assayas' Late August, Early September was recently added to HBO Max with a Janus logo at the start.
