Because Warner has released Stagecoach a couple of times and repackaged it at least twice as well, maybe they think it's more profitable to not invest in the production of a new release when they could just sit back and collect a licensing fee. There could also be some sort of quid pro quo...we'll license this to you, but you license to us the extras you produced for these titles...

I don't know what their deal with Warner is like. Maybe Criterion insisted on having some marquee titles like Stagecoach...maybe Warner was just willing to part ways with it since they've made their money off a couple of DVD releases already. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Rather interesting event between the two, no? I'd like to know more of their agreement. And what we get out of that cuz...Stagecoach is an awesome event on itself.

Also much like a previous poster mentioned: How did CC get this from WB?! Does WB not see a valuable release to cinephiles? I'm fucking ecstatic more so that CC has this!!! I am in! What if . . . just what if . . . we see more releases from Criterion WB doesn't care about putting on Blu . . . ? |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
WB usually does a good job with their classic films, but whatever it takes to get more titles released is fine with me.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
That's the thought that's been running in my head, since I typed up my questions. Which films (and this is fucking hard cuz WB has an awesome amount amazing films that people, even BEYOND we the cinephiles, love....they're just that damn good) would WB think about doing that too? I mean...c'mon...STAGECOACH! That's a big deal for us. The thought that WB is letting CC do that is amazing. That film is monumental (I actually didn't mean to pun it here but..it is that good) in the scheme of the Western genre and Cinema overall. Possibly....I dunno. My mind can't grasp WB doing that but...here we are w/ Stagecoach by CC on Blu. This is a big deal, I assume, for CC's future IF things like this happen.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I agree WB has done a good job of classic films on DVD . . .
But maybe they don't see the value in releasing some of them on Blu-ray . . . the next laserdisc-like niche product some argue. But let's not have that argument and just be happy we are getting Stagecoach and look forward to the future! |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm unfamiliar with Stagecoach, is this like the equivalent of Disney giving The Lion King to Criterion or something?
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
In a way, yes (depending if you think Lion King is an amazing film and etc blah blah....I thought it was good but I also haven't seen it in 10 yrs)
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
No surprises among the four, but still easily their best month of 2010 so far.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The rights to film seems a bit muddy, based on Wikipedia:
The film was originally released through United Artists, but under their old seven-year-rights rule, surrendered its distribution rights to producer Walter Wanger in 1946. Many independent companies were responsible for this film in the years since. The film's copyright is currently held by 20th Century Fox, who produced a later 1966 remake of Stagecoach. However, distribution rights are now held by the UCLA Film and Television Archive on behalf of ancillary rights holder The Caidin Trust, with Castle Hill Productions and Warner Bros. Pictures representing. The original negatives of Stagecoach were either lost or destroyed. John Wayne had one positive print that had never been through a projector gate. In 1970, he permitted it to be used to produce a new negative, and that is the film seen today at film festivals.[13] UCLA formally restored the film in 1996 from surviving elements and premiered on cable's American Movie Classics network. The current DVD releases by Warner Home Video do not contain the restored print, but rather a video print held in the Castle Hill/Caidin Trust library. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
well...damn...that's a murky rights issue there.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Really thrilled about the month. The first month in many where I'll be getting all of them... and quickly!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Already sold my copy of M so I've got a big chunk of the Blu-ray paid for. This will be a triple dip on that one, but I love the movie so no complaints. Guess I should start saving up for the Criterion 2K version on the next format.
However, Criterion got the rights to Stagecoach I am glad they are releasing it. Can't wait. Love the movie. One of the few Wayne movies I like, but it and Searchers are among my favorite films. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Warner Brothers do not own Stagecoach. They had licensed the rights to Stagecoach and a number of other titles from the owners, The Caidin Trust.
As part of cut backs Warners decided to stop licensing from third parties, so titles from the Caidin Trust, Charlie Chaplin estate, etc. became available and were picked up by Criterion. Other Caidin titles that were formerly distributed by Warner Brothers but are now with Criterion include John Ford's The Long Voyage Home, Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent, Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not To Be. Criterion are also releasing the Charlie Chaplin films at some point in the future. (all the Warner discs are long OOP) |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I totally forgot about the Chaplin stuff. Damn, that's going to be awesome.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I have 4 of those Chaplin dvds - I had no idea they were even OOP, and it looks like they're going for some decent change. If Criterion's going to re-release them, I may as well sell the ones I have for now, since I know Criterion will one-up those - possibly even in blu-ray.

Criterion City Lights

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The transfer for the WB Chaplin sets have really bad ghosting issues since they were badly transferred from the PAL MK2 releases. Criterion will make sure that doesn't happen.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Wow, both Hunger and Revanche showed up to me today from DVDPlanet.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Well if Warner was to release this EXACT same version of Stagecoach with the new extras (old ones not ported over), most of you would bitch and moan that this is a needless double dip.
See how ecstatic everyone is by the simple fact that this is a CRITERION release? Ultimately, it may be more profitable for studios to license their films to Criterion after they are done releasing it as opposed to double or triple dipping. A Criterion release opens up a whole new consumer market who would not even consider the earlier studio release, even for an academically worthy film. |

yea i really don't give a shit who puts out STAGECOACH, i'm just glad it'll be on blu-ray.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Let's not forget that this release almost amounts to a double-feature, as an earlier, 54-minute Ford Western will also be included, most likely in HD as well. Add what will surely be another superbly insightful Tag Gallagher video essay, among many other extras, and this amounts to a landmark release, and a sure-fire candidate for disc of the year. There are more than enough valid reasons to feel ecstatic without having to rely on what smirnoffski rather condescendingly refers to as the "simple facts" of the C on the cover and the number on the spine, which are essentially irrelevant, except perhaps as symbols of unimpeachable quality.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
To me it's like this...
1.Criterion's releasing a Ford film on Blu. Wow. 2. Criterion's releasing STAGECOACH on BLU!?!? Fucking awesome 3.What? They're releasing it on Blu AND putting in a bunch of awesome features AND an old silent Ford Film? I just went in my pants cuz of the awesomeness. |

You should really try the squeeze method to prevent this embarrassing problem from happening in the future. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I wonder if Blu-ray is still seen as niche to the studios, whereas they are more likely to license out older films to Criterion.
Like I don't see Fox releasing films like Night of the Hunter or even Some Like It Hot on Blu-ray. |

Like I don't see Fox releasing films like Night of the Hunter or even Some Like It Hot on Blu-ray. Saying that. I'm 23 yrs. old. A film major at UNT. Have Mexican parents who each parent enjoyed different genres. Dad- HK action cinema and U.S. action movies. Mom-Westerns and dramas (with some Mexican films for the both thrown in there too). Not many people around my age give a damn about the western. It's a B movie genre type (again I hate saying that) that thrived like crazy but it's not hot anymore. That's where I see studios not really pushing a film like Stagecoach. And it's also the why. ooooh!!!! Well look here. http://www.amazon.com/Pierrot-fou-Cr...6113833&sr=8-1 Seems like Amazon doesn't have Pierrot Le Fou anymore. So fucking lucky I have it now. Well at least it's out on the Blu. |
