Criterion posted a bunch of original Throne of Blood publicity stills on facebook. Did they already hint at a Throne of Blood Blu-ray release?

Nothing's been outright stated so far. I wouldn't be opposed to more Kurosawa on Blu.

Me either. I'd want them all, but first I want Stray Dog and The Hidden Fortress.

Hidden Fortress in particular is in need of an upgrade - it's one of the few early Criterions not to have received one.

Yeah Hidden Fortress for sure. And also Criterion needs to release Madadayo individually. That's the only one from the AK 100 box set that hasn't been given a separate release.

And if I had to pick two: Ikiru and The Bad Sleep Well.

If only they could have kept RAN. Fucking Studio Canal.

RAN is very much overrated.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Ran was one of the first DVDs I ever bought (the terrible Fox Lorber one). And I think I never watched it. I thought about getting the Criterion when it was available but balked at the cost, so I recently got the cheap Studio Canal BD. Glad to have it but don't know when I'll watch it.

I liked the movie in theaters but obviously haven't seen it in a while.

Tell me about it! It's only worlds better than 98% of everything else, not 99%.

It's probably Kurosawa's weakest film.

I disagree with that assessment, but even if I didn't... as I say, better than 98% of everything else.

But when one considers the large number of really crappy films, that is not saying much.

no way is Ran Kurosawa's weakest.

As for wants, I'd say Rashomon first, Red Beard second then Stray Dog.

But hey, since he is my second favorite director, I'll take anything released.

I wish there was more information on how Criterion chooses which titles to upgrade and when. Their decisions on which to upgrade does not seem to be financially motivated as the Wes Anderson titles would be out by now.

I'm really hoping for an announcement for In the Mood for Love, the Robert Bresson titles and the remaining Michelangelo Antonioni and Godard in the catalog.

Only 2 of his films in the CC is on BD. The other 4 aren't. I'd love to see Life Aquatic on BD...that's my fav WA flick. I kind of doubt Fantastic Mr. Fox will get in CC....though if it did...I'd be open to it.

so...depending on what you get...it can be as equal as B&N..if you use one coupon as your supposed to.

that American Lost and Found set...what's the cheapest it's been? it's at $52.99 on amazon.

Well, scratch that. There are exactly 2 of the sale titles that I don't have: White Material & The Leopard.

what? Man...that's harsh. Personally...I find it extremely well executed...but something is off...that being the main actor, Nakadai. His character, to me, demands more....eccentric or erratic emotion or reaction. Katsu I believe would have played it better....just cuz...he had more of that I guess. It's not a bad film at all. To me though...something feels a bit weakened w/ Nakadai that Katsu would have brought.

I don't care for Kurosawa's later films. I think his last great film was Red Beard and then everything after was only okay at best. I don't know why it doesn't work for me as a film. I've watched RAN twice and it just lacks the emotional power of his other films -- it comes off almost like a parody of his older samurai flicks.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Noirfan,

I would put I Live in Fear, The Lower Depths, The Quiet Duel, Scandal (and the horror) Throne of Blood and Ikiru below Kagemusha.

Personal taste of course but I have always found the latter two to be not as brilliant as they are reviewed.

Having said that, all of the above films are at least good and the comparison is only relative.

That Criterion closet is one closet I wouldn't mind going in and staying for awhile. Where do I get my visitor's pass?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Although it is awesome to see these directors going in and getting movies and discussing their thoughts....but personally if I were in the business I would buy them all on release day as they come out! (As I'm sure many other Talkers would...)

PopcornTreeCt 04-29-11 12:20 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Those kinds of people are usually working all the time. The successful, working people are typically pulling 12+ hour days. And the ones that aren't working likely couldn't afford to buy Criterions.

I tried the business for a little while but didn't like not knowing where or when my next paycheck would come from. I think it's much easier for 9-5ers like most of us to keep track of the movies than the business folk.

I buy a lot of Criterions but who wouldn't mind being handed a grab bag and the keys to the closet? Yes, those that work can buy movies but if Criterion is handing them out then why not take some that you don't have. I'm not one to spend my money on every single Criterion release out there just because they exist.

I do because I'm crazy. The downside is that since so little of worth is coming out from other studios at the moment, my backlog is nothing but Criterions. I think I was six deep until watching Blow Out last night. The other downside is seeing Amazon post insane sale prices for Criterions I've already bought for $27.99 but haven't actually watched yet.

bluetoast 04-29-11 03:55 PM

Yeah I used to buy all of the Criterion BDs, when it was around 2 a month, but now I can't keep up.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

If I play hard and spend around $450 this upcoming BN Criterion sale, then I will own all of the Criterion BDs through July of this year. Of course, with the release schedule, I'll be out of date within a few weeks.
