re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'm definitely in on all the Kurosawa Blus this year. Hopefully Criterion will eventually get Ran back and get that onto a respectable Blu. Until then, I'll hold on to my dvd. Other than the ones we know, I really hope we see High And Low and The Hidden Fortress hit Blu this year.

So that's just it? And CC still has whatever they now have and have had?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
As long as their rights hold out, which means they have access to 25 of his thirty movies. Five of those are part of Eclipse and three will be joining them, so those are unlikely to be BD candidates anytime soon. Madadayo and The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail will be Criterion releases this year (separate from the AK 100 set), but who knows if they will get the BD treatment.

My favorite Kurosawa is Ikiru - I'd love to see that one in Blu. A beautifully moving, darkly comic film.

Let's hope so. The more Kurosawa on Blu-ray from Criterion the better.

I had 8 1/2 preordered from barnes and noble and just got a delay notice. Not sure what's up there.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
And looks like Amazon has cleared their discrepancy up and is selling it. I feared it could have been a last minute rights issue, but looks like it was just a day or two delay (and no delay on some copies, apparently) in stock.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
yeah, I noticed that too. Was extremely worried there for a bit.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I received all six of my replacement cases today.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
So has anybody bought Bottle Rocket or Chungking Express from Barnes and Noble's website lately? I really want them but I don't want to have to spend the extra $10 for the new cases if they are still shipping out the old digipak versions.

Criterion have also (already) lost the rights to Pierrot Le Fou, which is sending both the Blu-ray and the DVD out-of-print soon. Confirmed via their newsletter:

So much for a complete set of Criterion M. Hulot BDs.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Glad I got my copy of Pierrot Le Fou during the last big B&N sale.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Pierrot Le Fou is mine now. Fuck. WTF is up w/ Criterion losing rights? I don't need this stress..lol.
I'm guessing I should get Alphaville as well. Kinda sad it's a barebones release but....guess it's mine now. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
To have all of those go oop at the same time is brutal. I already have a few of them but now I've got to try and fit the rest into my budget. However, Amazon's price on Grand Illusion really sucks considering how long its been available.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I totally agree on the budget. NOBODY is forcing us to buy the films out of that list but we all know whomever else will do them will not give it the same care as CC did. Which practically forces us to get them. Fuck....:(
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
the offical cc site has the best prices for these titles, from my 10 minutes of research...
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Praying for a BN Criterion sale again soon.

Jour de fête (1949) A hilarious exposé of the modern obsession of with speed and efficiency, Jacques Tati’s award winning feature début is a dazzling blend of satire and slapstick. Les Vacances de M. Hulot (1953) The film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous, well-meaning eternally accident-prone Monsieur Hulot. Mon Oncle (1958) Jacques Tati’s third feature is a satirical assault on the twin targets of efficiency and the modern world. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and a Special Prize at Cannes. Playtime (1967) Regarded by many as Jacques Tati’s masterpiece, Playtime is a surreal comic vision of mankind’s battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life. Parade (1974) Tati’s last film sees his return to the boisterous music hall world in which he began his career as a mime artist in the 1930’s. The perfect stage for Tati’s comic genius. Extras across the five discs include: Interview with filmmaker Richard Lester on Tati: Playtime feature commentary by film historian Philip Kemp: Short Documentary ‘Au-delà de Playtime: Continuity supervisor Sylvette Baudrot on Tati and Playtime: Director biography and short film about Tati: Interview with Tati, filmed in London (1977,19 min) : Original Tati trailers : Fully illustrated colour booklets containing commissioned sleeve notes, essays and biographies. cool beans! |

How's this: leave the Criterion disc unopened and sell it for a nice profit on Amazon six months from now, and still order the R2 disc.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I received all of my replacement cases today. All my Criterion Blu-ray discs look pretty great together. The only one that sticks out like a sore thumb is... yup... you guessed it... The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
I would kill for a replacement case for that one. I know Paramount distributed it, but Criterion should offer a replacement case anyway. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Funny. I never got a case issue w/ the blus..but to be honest I only own Third Man and Ben Button w/ Le Pierrot coming in tomorrow.
