With the new WB deal for Paramount titles, is Criterion likely to lose the rights to some of those films?
It doesn't take effect until January, so anything affected should remain in print until then, at least. From the titles known, it sounds like these are going to be mainstream titles that Paramount would have released themselves anyway. But then again, maybe only the biggest titles have been announced. I don't think Criterion has released many Paramount titles though. There's Rosemary's Baby, Harold and Maude, and... what else? |

I think the blu-ray upgrades is probably what we should be most worried about, IMO.

*Jules walks in, sees no sign of Good Burger Criterion on bluray being announced, walks out, fills bathtub with water, slits wrist, slowly loses consciousness while singing "I'm a dude, you're a dude, we're all dudes", uses his last thoughts to ponder "What was the meaning of it all then?" and blows his head off with a Shotgun for good measure.*

Too bad the new version is missing Wong's biography doc from the original. The extras should have at least been docked a bit of a star for that. Now I am annoyed I sold my orignial DVD in anticipation of this release. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
They're announcing January releases today - any predictions?
I'm randomly guessing: Wenders trilogy (though that would make three boxsets in three months) On the Waterfront Wild Strawberries (upgrade) Eclipse - French New Wave |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I've been having decent luck lately, guessing stuff I want, so I'll continue:
The Friends of Eddie Coyle Ikiru The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp The Spy Who Came In From the Cold |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I'll keep on guessing The Blob until they announce it.
|

BRUTE FORCE goddamnit!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Madadayo. Seriously come on.
Ikiru would be great as well. |

Criterion specifically mentioned Ikiru on their Facebook page last week, not as a potential title just as a link about the movie. Hmm...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
They have to announce Y tu mamá también at some point, right? I'd like to get confirmation of Red River too.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Thief!
Hey, one can hope. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Peter Weir's Fearless would be fabulous.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Still hoping for Eraserhead. It's getting harder and harder to resist one of the imports.

Meh. Only two new releases.
I'm excited about the Hitchcock and the Tarkovsky, and will rent the Wenders. Overall, though, not the most exciting month, in my opinion. |

Would be a bold move if Criterion released this in 2D and 3D. I'd be very interested to see how Criterion would do 3D.

Well, now I have to pick this up.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Pina in 3-D? Awesome! I'm ecstatic over The Man Who Knew Too Much (miles better than the American version), but will stick to my DVDs of Ivan's Childhood and Two-Lane Blacktop. I still haven't seen The Tin Drum.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I really disliked The Tin Drum.
It will be really nice to get a good quality version of The Man Who Knew Too Much. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I wonder what the likelihood is of a Criterion Hitchcock box down the road with 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, Man and Foreign Correspondent. Perhaps they could rescue a couple more 30's films from public domain hell?

CC doing 3D? Oooooooh

Meanwhile, I was just beginning to wonder when the first The Man Who Knew Too Much would see the light of day. I'm very pleased to see that. |

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Any comments on the Tarkovsky film? I'm only familiar with Solaris.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
The Man Who Knew Too Much is GREAT news. I've been waiting for them to do more of hitchcock's british films forever. I don't understand what's preventing them from doing all of his british films. I'd love Young and Innocent and Blackmail.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Can anyone explain the Guillermo connection to Man?
