I don't know for sure, but I imagine he's probably just a fan of the film. He also provided a commentary for the Masters of Cinema release of Dreyer's Vampyr.

MWKTM and TWO LANE BLACKTOP shall both be mine

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Meh nothing I need to rush out for that month. I might get The Man Who Knew Too Much eventually but that's it.

Any comments on the Tarkovsky film? I'm only familiar with Solaris.
It's his first feature length film, so it's not quite as stylistically audacious as what was to come. However it's still visually striking, and it has a more accessible storyline than any of his other films. It's also a lot faster paced. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Pina is in 3D and $10 more. Cool.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
In for TMWKTM and Ivans Childhood which has my favorite bit of cinematography ever (for those that have seen it, the tracking shots in the forest following the courtship of Masha).
Will wait for comparison reviews of Tin Drum and Two Lane Blacktop, I suspect at least the former might be superior given that Arrow put both cuts on one disc. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Two Lane Blacktop and another Hitchcock makes a good month in my book. I have the DVD of the former though, so will be patient about upgrading. Too many other CCs I don't own at all that are grabbing my attention.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Glad I held off on getting Two-Lane Blacktop on DVD.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Two Lane Black Top. It's available via Eureka and the Masters of Cinema label, so I wonder what the differences are?

The Devils Backbone was confirmed by Criterion producers tonight in Columbus.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
From someone on the Criterion facebook:
Wexler Center rundown: Les Miserables and The Jungle Book will eventually make the jump from Eclipse set to CC mainline. "Life and Death of Col.Blimp" AND "Richard III" are going Blu in 2013. Unclear if Le Samourai going Blu. No forthcoming Andrei R. Blu. Schlesinger's "Darling" will NOT be coming. NO more Passolini. 2013 releases: Soah, Badlands, Devil's Backbone (mid-'13). Also "some" Ray in 2013 but NOT Apu Trilogy. And "On the Waterfront" will have 3 aspect ratios on its 2013 release. Also Criterion news from Wex.Center pannel discussion tonight: WarnerBrothers deal reached but not clear on what besides Malick's "Badlands" and one "Pre-code" title. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Le Samourai "unclear"? Make it clear, dammit!
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Wow, Criterion going the Touch of Evil route on On the Waterfront, should prove interesting. I wonder what the pre-Code will be - I'm going to guess I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang.

ohhhhhhh DEVIL'S BACKBONE

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
YES! More Del Toro! Now give me Y Tu Mama Tambien and Thief goddamnit, CC.
|
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Good news on Devil's Backbone getting the CC treatment. I already have the UK import of it, so that'll hold me over until mid 2013.

To be clear, they apparently said that the Apu Trilogy is forthcoming, but that it might not be out in 2013 and that we will probably get another Ray film in the meantime.
Excited about the Ray film and the Warner deal. Freaking heartbroken about Andrei Rublev, my favorite film. (Maybe I will just have to import the Russian BD.) |

Very excited about Devil's Backbone. :)
I wonder if they will want to (or be able to) include all the supplements from both DVD versions? |

They have said multiple times in the past that a lot of the elements needed for an HD transfer of Andrei Rublev have been lost.

I wonder which commentary track will appear on the Criterion edition, or if will be a new 'third' one. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
I wish it was Trouble in Paradise although since MoC skipped making it blu, I can only imagine the source is not in good shape.
So next wish is something like Baby Face. |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
what's the hold up of Jean Renoir's The River - watch, when I buy the import, Criterion will officially announce it (just my constant misluck).

I didn't know there was controversy about On the Waterfront's aspect ratio.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
Hope you all don't mind, but since most of the Criterion discussion happens here I was wondering if I could bother you all for a thought about the DVD versions.
I've taken advantage of the fact that Criterion has started re-issuing titles on Bluray to start watching for some of the DVDs to show up in the used market, and I have started to pick up a few of these here and there. But I know that even Criterion wasn't all that at first, and put out many non-anamorphic transfers, or just bad looking transfers in their early days. Was there a spine# that anyone would consider a cutoff for where they turned things around? I usually have my iPhone with me and can look up some reviews, but would like to be able to tell at a glance if I should bother with an older release. thanks |
re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread
First of all, most Criterion releases have always been some of the best around in terms of extras, even during the early days. I'll admit they weren't nearly as consistent back then, though, as some discs were pretty much barebones with lackluster non-anamorphic transfers. Some split the difference, like <i>Brazil</i>: the original boxed set had tons of great extras but the A/V quality was lacking. A few of these less impressive efforts stemmed from a lack of available extras or less-than-desirable source elements, but most were simply Laserdisc ports since Criterion hadn't committed to DVD yet.
One major milestone occurred with <i>Insomnia</i> (spine #47 - the Norwegian original, not the Nolan remake), which was the first Criterion disc to use an anamorphic transfer. After that, they started to become more consistent in their presentation quality...and today, they rarely put out anything less than a top quality package (unless you don't like the movie, of course). A footnote: some of the earlier Criterions have since been re-released on Blu-Ray and/or DVD with the same spine numbers (<i>Brazil, Beauty and the Beast</i>, most everything by Kurosawa), so if the cover looks different than the Criterion website it's probably an older version. |
