I'd hate it if it was for a film I loved or was excited about, yeah. This one is that much worse, or maybe more ironic, because of the content. Like I said before, it was the perfect time for the ad, what with all of the talk of making things "family friendly".

video of torture-porn
Have you seen the movie? Again Frontier(s) would not qualify as torture-porn IMHO. It's really just another slasher flic. Now the whole violence/sexuality thing is an entirely different cultural debate that we aren't going to be able to cover here.

To be fair they are selling it as "torture porn" in their ads. Hardly family friendly.

Well I guess you have me on that one, since I still haven't seen the ad All I can tell you is no matter what they are selling it as, the movie itself is pretty bad.

But yeah, the ad makes it look like nothing but another TP flick.

I was actually interested in seeing the flick until I saw this ad here. I heard about it a while back.

It's simple, you posting a sexy picture doesn't make IB any money, while an ad campaign like this terrible one does.

How does this make them any money? Its a plague as far as this board is concerned. The ad is abyssmal. The movie is abyssmal, and IB's lack of concern is abyssmal.

They already made their money when they contracted the ad space.

No one here is ordering film or giving this movie any positive word of mouth. Its a complete failure all around, except for IB who already pocketed LG's money. They are contracted to run the ad for god knows how long now and plan to do so until said contract ends. Whatever.

I say tomorrow if this ad is not gone that ANYONE reading this boycott this site for 1 week completely. See how their ad revenue and click thru's survive when there is a mass exodus.

Maybe then they will listen to us.

Perfect. The hundreds that see the ad refuse to watch the movie. The one person who has not seen the ad, watched it. Advertising at its very best!

Or everyone that's still seeing the ad could do what's been suggested several times already... Get Firefox and install ABP. I finally gave in and installed it a few days ago even though I've been using Firefox for years without it. This ad gave me all the reason that I finally needed.

There must still be a lot of IE users seeing this? Not sure if the other browsers like Opera and Netscape also have ad blocking add ons, but I think Safari does...

If people install the add-ons that don't allow for the ads to appear or quit clicking through on ANY ads, how long would it take for IB to take notice?

They can't tell what you have installed on your browser. So no they won't notice anything.
And people actually click on those ads?

Installing the blocks doesnt really hurt them. You are still coming here hitting the site and generating bandwith numbers they can use to contract for ads.

If the flow of traffic stopped entirely then you really hurt them.
Blocking ads and still showing up here and contributing really solves nothing.

The click-through count is also a number that matters when contracting ads.

And if they are referral links then they lose that potential revenue.

You aren't suppose to have ad blockers installed for obvious reasons. It the honor system. They can't enforce it.

I wasn't having a problem with this at home on my Mac but once I got to work I was completely unable to visit because the ad would blast out of my speakers when the mouse only came within sight of the banner. I think it is perfectly reasonable to say that I hate this ad (because this place is my favorite way to take five minutes away from a very stressful new job) and the response from IB has been, in a word, terrible.

So what does it matter how we complain? IB isn't going to do things differently, so we might as well bitch in here to at least make ourselves feel better. And what do you care how we do it either? I doubt IB cares about you any more than the rest of us.
Draven, I agree that it is "perfectly reasonable" to tell them you hate the ad (hint: I did too). What I am talking about is the dozen or two people that seem to have made it their mission to spread misery in the form of reprisals; the same ones that used to find fault with anything the former owner did by the way, no matter how much backtracking they engaged in.

As far as the ad running its course, I also agree, though it has been far less frequent for most of us since the issue was brought to IB's attention. This is nothing unique to IB either, G! tested various forms of ads that drove some of us crazy too. The difference is that he knew how people would respond after running such ads since he would ALSO received scores of emails from long time supporters, not just the cranks, saying as much. IB does not have the same history with the members that actively participate here and their turnover in employees dealing with the website is such that I doubt they ever will. That means IB gets to see the same old complainers ranting like lunatics as though said complainers have an ownership stake in DVD Talk; making it far easier to dismiss them out of hand.

For the record, if you hate an ad or the way it is presented, contacting the company that it represents makes more sense than the one running it. A polite note telling Lionsgate that you dislike the ad and will be unlikely to watch the movie BECAUSE of the ad is the best way to make sure they never run one like that again. "Bitching" about an ad to make yourselves "feel" better is counter productive when there are courses of action you can take to make an impact, courses of action that people routinely take once they grow up. I'm half surprised a few of you didn't post the email addresses to the board of directors at IB by now too, but that would require someone treating this complaint as though it were a REAL complaint, not just a small group of people wanting to vent (it's difficult to try and sway the opinion of corporate types when they've been desensitized by the same old people).

Oh, and as for the last part of your comment, a few at IB have shown that they listen to people that are long time contributors, including those that most directly influence what happens here. That doesn't mean we can get them to do as we please but there are times when we can make a difference. Since my preferred vision for DVD Talk is to see it grow in the right way, I feel obligated to address some of the childish remarks or misstatements some folks are making. Frankly, if the most vocal complainers (again, those that have found fault with all sorts of things no matter who was in charge, and make the most caustic remarks so regularly) are so unhappy, maybe it would be better for all concerned if they simply walked away from the place. Others have pointed out that the overall experience here is almost exactly the same as it was (sans the porn content) so it's not just me that thinks so...

Yes, people click on the ads and go to the other sites all the time.

Also, tons of people go to XCritic.

I, for one, have seen absolutely no reduction in the frequency of these ads.

I actually have. Although only in the last hour or so. I actually haven't seen it pop up, whereas yesterday it seemed to load on every single page.

It expanded, came to life, and started screaming at me all on its own. I was just sitting, there, typing in the quick reply box, and it started up.

NICE.
