Here's the 2023 theme nights list in no particular order unless otherwise noted.

Those who missed last year's challenge - this June 2022 post from the planning thread explains the changes made.

Hopefully by the time you've read this all the subset volunteers up to this point will have received their reminder PMs. Subset picking will kickoff officially tomorrow night (7/17), at least that's the plan.

Jawsploitation. This one's a popular returning theme that's been used 4 times, but not since 2018. It's a great time to bring it back to coincide with the upcoming release of the new documentary "Sharksploitation" premiering on Shudder.

What's Your Name? Checklist entries sometimes make for great themes. This is one of them.

Breaking the Fourth Wall / Meta-Horror-Cinema. Meta is a returning theme that was used once back in 2011. Now seemed like a good time to give it a second chance with the resurrection of the Scream series. Breaking the Fourth Wall was added due to their similarities and the fact they're often intertwined.

The Horror Show Guide: The Ultimate Frightfest of Movies. This is a book that I was not aware of its existence until doing a link search for the second round of the Frightfest Guides. From what I can see, it's a very comprehensive guide covering over 1,000 titles, and I'll probably be adding it to my collection.

Danza Macabra: An Exploration of Gothic Horror Cinema. This is a returning theme of an obviously popular sub-genre that's only been used twice, and not since 2011 if you can believe it. The inspiration for its return was all the recent boutique label box sets - Gothic Fantastico: Four Italian Tales of Terror from Arrow Video, Mexican Gothic: The Films of Carlos Enrique Taboada from Vinegar Syndrome and Danza Macabra: Volume One — The Italian Gothic Collection from Severin Films, which also inspired the title. The newly added links for the Italian Gothic films were taken from Roberto Curti's book trilogy Italian Gothic Horror Films (1957-1969, 1970-1979 and 1980-1989).

R.I.P. TCM Underground. A TCM staple that was on the air for 18 years deserves some recognition. The February 2023 cancellation announcement came two months after the termination of longtime Underground programmer Millie DeChirico, who was fired right before Christmas. Another causality of CEO David Zaslav.

The OHMC Guide to Location-Based Horrors. Inspired by last year's holiday guide and global edition of the passport to terror. We've covered quite a few location-based themes through the years, and several haven't been used for ages, so why not combine them all for an all-in-one super theme? Throw in a random button for easier navigation and fun. And apologies if I went a bit overboard with these, it just sort of happened.

Wrong Side of the Art. This is a heartfelt tribute to the poster artists that have produced some amazing poster and cover art over the years. Their work has been an inspiration for many of the banners, and have definitely gotten quite a few of us to purchase physical media titles with their original and newly commissioned art. The title's taken from the now defunct poster website that continues to fuel the banners. The Ghana and Thai posters with their batshit crazy vibe fit nicely, so couldn't resist adding them. I'll try and post some more user-friendly links for those two, FYI.

Random Maniacal Mashup of Insane Indecisiveness: The Fourth Kind. The idea for "Vanity Projects" was taken from the Movie Melt! podcast. A big thanks to host Matt Simpson for both the idea and compiling the list. "Eat the Rich" was inspired by the recent release of Brandon Cronenberg's The Infinity Pool. "Killer Inanimate Objects" just because it's damn cool. "Based on Children's Books", for better or worse, was due to the recent releases of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and The Mean One.

Horror Movies Inspired by True Events. This is yet another returning theme that for whatever reason got overlooked and was only used once all the way back in 2013. So, we now have an additional 10 years worth of titles to enjoy.

Joe Bob Briggs Presents: Unlucky Charms - A Celebration of Friday the 13th. Every once in a blue moon we have two reoccurring themes that occur on the same day resulting in the emergence of a super-theme. Vampires and werewolves (Lugosi's birthday on a full moon) were the last. Am I 100% certain The Last Drive-In will air on that day? No, but last year it was the second Friday of the month, so the odds are pretty damn high. If not, I'll move Joe Bob to the correct Friday and make whatever necessary changes.

100 Years of Warner Bros. Horror. It's a centennial from a studio that's produced some great works over the years, so a celebration it gets. And considering who the current CEO is, well, who know what the future holds for WB?

Farewell Banana Man, Goodbye Scorpion, Godspeed Cannibal Man & Adieu Mr. B.I.G.
Normally four RIP posts aren't combined into one theme; this is the exception. Two brothers with similar boutique labels that passed away within months of each other fit together. While Ruggero Deodato and Bert I. Gordon are both legends, their combined filmography don't produce the amount of titles others do. The idea is to have four subsets representing them all.

Teen Screams! A thrice returning theme last used in 2014. This was a popular one, but it always managed to just miss the final cut. The Wrath of Becky and the overall abundance of choices brought it back.

My congrats to anyone who made it all the way through!

The Annual Building of the 31 Film Subset: 2023 Edition Starts Here!


The subset list is comprised of 33+ films (one for each day of the month w/ a person assigned to each + two crossover themes decided by group vote) with their own individual discussion threads. It syncs with theme nights.

1. Look over the theme nights list on post #27. When making your selection it's always a good idea to have a few backup choices that sync with several themes because a) someone may have already claimed your subset suggestion and b) there's no guarantee your first suggestion will make the final cut if several others have picks with the same themes attached. Do not let the fact that someone has already chosen your intended pick(s) dissquade you from choosing them.


2. Before making your selection(s) avoid repeats by checking what we've used in previous years, and there's plenty of ways to do that:

  1. I will do a subset (picks coming soon).
  2. I am also planning to host the subsets as usual. But work will be making my life difficult for the next couple months (at least) -- I have to travel twice in August, losing about 2 weeks, and September is looking very very busy -- so the sooner we get subsets sorted, the better the odds I'll actually get them up by October. (Thanks, Chad, for all the work you do to make this process work!)
  3. Because I am a data geek, I am busily porting over most of the theme links into IMDb lists, to consolidate multi-link themes and expand filtering options (e.g., filter out already-used subset picks). I'll start posting those soon in case they are useful to anyone trying to come up with subset picks, and/or to Chad as he tries to fit the jigsaw puzzle together. :-)

I'm down to 106 movies left to watch on the They Shoot Zombies list, and my goal is to be done by the end of this year's challenge. So I've been trying to fit the remaining films to our theme nights. It's nice to have the themes so early!

It's fixed. That's the Hollie Horror account that was temporarily banned awhile back, and the URLs are constantly changing. I used the tarfrimmer links (thanks, BTW), and, yeah, the first one is literally the same list including the year old comments.

Oh, nice. I follow their socials and have been eyeing a few of the Twin Peaks posters and one for Possession. But every time I'm about to pull the trigger something even more outrageous is unveiled. :lol:
