Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Just posted in the Blu-ray forum, but there's a Severin blow-out sale for 5 titles going OOP this Thursday:

https://severin-films.com/hurry-blow...-til-thursday/

And in other optional list related news...

I'm getting ready to plug the theme nights into a table. Are there any requests for themes that should be placed on a certain day, aside from the obvious ones? As far as the new ones go I only have RIP Gunnar Hansen & Angus Scrimm for 10/7 (Friday). That's the day Phantasm: Ravager is being released digitally and in select theaters.

Also for the 'Masters of Commentary' checklist idea I currently have John Carpenter, Joe Bob Briggs, Guillermo del Toro and just added Larry Cohen. Anyone else?

Thank you very much! I placed an order for all of the films! I've not seen most, but Horror Express is awesome! I couldn't pass up BDs that cheap!

Also, thanks for all your work! I know this is an endeavor and appreciate that you undertake it!

I'm wondering if I should jump on this. Never seen any of these and only heard of a couple of them.

I haven't seen the others, but Horror Express was really enjoyable. It was like The Thing set on a train, and Cushing and Lee are always fun.

I think the Christmas theme day should be on the 25th.

Here's a few other ideas:

Extraterrestrial Horror - Sputnik was launched on October 4, 1957
Dark Shadows - Nancy Barrett's birthday is October 5, 1943.
The European Passport to Terror - United Nations Day is October 24th.

Hmm. I've got two of the five. I might just go ahead and splurge for the other three.

Maybe they can donate all the unsold copies to the board for prizes.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

I'll recommend all five. The Baby is probably the hardest sell of the bunch. That said, if you're into offbeat films like Death Bed, Frank Henelotter films, etc., it's probably right up your alley.

Psychomania is coming to Region B (I assume) Blu-ray 9/19 from BFI.

Yes! That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

Any kind of anniversary's, birthdays, holidays, good weekend themes ...whatever.

Severin is the one company I've had a zero success rate with getting as a sponsor. And I've tried practically every year but last.

Here are some matching anniversaries / historical days, some more random than others:
Spoiler:
October 4th is World Animal Day so matches:
Insects (+ Killer Animals and Giant Monsters) [maybe also were-creatures)
Alternatively October 29th is National Cat Day and might be interchangeable with above.

The ‘creator’ of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, died on October 24, 1991 – 25 years ago so matches:
Extraterrestrial Horror

The 10th Anniversary of Showtime’s serial killer killer TV show, Dexter is October 1st so might work for:
Slasher, Giallos, & Serial Killers

On October 3rd, 1862 Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving, so maybe would work for:
Holidays

This is obscure but 100 years ago on October 28th 1916 the founder of the US Weather Bureau (Cleveland Abbe) died, and even if no one will get the reference that works with:
A Dark And Stormy Night

You just gave me an amazing theme idea for next year...
The Horrors of USA Up All Night 200 titles and that was one of them.

Definitely can work with some of those. I do already have Insects for World Edible Insect Day on 10/23. And Zombies on 10/1 for NOTLD being released on that day in 1968.

Damn I came on WAY too late this year. I really wanted to throw up Anton Yelchin who passed away this year and has done some amazing horror work.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 12: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

I started going through my movies to set aside themes.

Does just camping out or taking a RV trip count for the Vacation / Travel theme or would it be better for the travel to be more exotic (international, touristy, etc)? It seems to me camping should count but that is also a whole other subgenre of movie.

It seems like there are a LOT of movies about agoraphobia, that might be a good checklist item.

Edit: Planning on watching Green Inferno for Travel/Vacation to be safe.

Is it valid that all Possession / Satanic / Hell movies also qualify for the Religious horror theme?

Possession could not work if you're possessed by an alien or a tree. I can't think of an exclusion to the other two.

I can use a few of these too. There are unfortunately a few overlaps: Frankenstein/Mad Doctors is currently placed on 10/28 for National Frankenstein Friday. It is nice to have a contingency plan just in case.

According to the IMDB list used they all count.

Added.

I was gonna say 'Witchcraft' is what differentiates the two, until seeing Warclock and a few other witch movies on the list. Although, there's 'Hell' which has Father's Day with a depiction of hell in it, and it isn't religious horror. But yeah, they're VERY similar. I'll be sure and put it towards the first of the month to keep some distance between the two.

That's a groovy one. Cool to be developing themes for 2017 already, too. Some of this year's near-missed should also be shortlisted.
