I finally got my hands on a 300 dvd/helmet. Yesterday I called up my local best buy and asked them if they will be getting anymore sets in, They said No and that it was a one time thing.....didn't believe them, or at least didn't want too.
Late last nite I checked bestbuy.com and figured why not see what the status is and lo and behold they were still sold out, But available to be picked up at my 3 local stores. Got in on one just for the hell of it and took my chances. Went to work and came home to see that my order was ready to be picked up. I still figured I would go to best buy and have a clerk say that we have none in the back, let me check the store shelves and be forced to leave the store with nada.
Anyway, went to best buy and went through the usual drill, she went to the back and came back with the set. I asked her if they have more (she said alot more in the back) and if she's been dealing with alot of pickup's. She seemed surprised by my last question and said that she didn't know it was such a hot item.

but seriously, why in the world would you want to cover a "steelbook" up with the slipcover from a regular edition? doesn't that defeat the purpose of why you have the "steelbook" in the first place? sb art is usually more sedated and artful, especially "The Departed" sb.

It's not the art is not there when the slipcover comes off.

Thanks.
Thanks.
I guess I can toss my 4 copies of the BB DVD.

Would anyone here who has a best buy with the helmet version in stock be willing to pick me one up? I'd pay for the shipping, I have a backordered one at bestbuy.com but I'm not very hopeful and the store employees keep telling me theyre not getting any more in, though it seems like some best buys are indeed getting more.

I hope this isn't against any of the forum rules but I am including the email that I sent:

I wanted to contact Warner Home Video in response to what I consider the diminishing quality of the studio's DVD transfers on new releases. As of late, many of the studio's big releases have sported somewhat inferior transfers when compared to discs from other studios. I am an avid film collector and watch many movies, and I have noticed through visiting home theater aficionado and DVD websites that others share my concerns. Although catalog titles like the Green Mile Special Edition look excellent, new releases like The Departed, Blood Diamond and 300 are not exceptionally impressive. In what I hope is not a ploy to get consumers to switch to high definition at this time, new releases feature a lot of graininess and "noise" in the picture, and I have noticed that it is almost always much more evident at the beginning of the film. Some of the early scenes of 300 appeared as if a screen was placed over the image. Although I suppose a casual viewer may not notice this dip in quality, I must express my disappointment. Although I am not currently ready to upgrade to high-def, I expect the same quality that Warner Brothers provided since the onset of DVD. A simple browsing of DVD discussion sites like I mentioned would likely yield similar opinions and I hope that this issue can be addressed on future releases. Thank you for reading.

Finally watched this tonight and was very disappointed in the transfer. Had read the review here and it stated that the transfer was very good. Don't know how they came to that conclusion. I know the movie is supposed to be "grainy", but this was way worse than that. Easily the worst transfer I've seen this year. It did tend to get a bit better as the movie progressed, but never looked great and some of the early scenes were just flooded with noise and ghosting. Tons of artifacts. Even my wife who never much notices PQ, commented early on in the movie about how bad it looked.
For the record, this was viewed on a 126" screen using a Panny 700 PJ.

Try watching it on something a bit smaller. It will look much better. Trust me.

Haha, I'm j/p.
