Wow, did I get lost in the shuffle (about 3 pages ago!). Any one care to give me a shot (or do I have to do Metaphor4 first? )

JSwarce,

I'm game.

BEST:

Star Wars Trilogy
Fight Club

MOST NEEDED:

Apocalypse Now

Here you go fryinpan 1 - my humble opinion. Nice movies in there, lots of great 80's action flicks, after my own heart. Tap into more classics, maybe older suspense or horror, and film noir. Happy collecting.

BEST
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - Special Edition
Monster Legacy Collection
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Criterion
Indiana Jones Collection

WORST
Charlies Angels - Superbit
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (with Bryan Adams video ) (actually I saw this in the theater with my mom )
Marylin Manson DVDs (no wink)
The Matrix Collection (but that's just me)

NEDDED
Full Metal Jacket
Psycho
The Night of the Hunter
The Limey
The Third Man - Criterion

Ah, good to see some Hammer love. I know, I really need to get more of these. And I have the laserdisc versions of the Star Wars OT, can't deal with the "special editions". Thanks for the input, Paul!

My "most needed" aren't really based on prestige and "everybody must own this classic piece of cinema," but it's more or less recommendations of some of my favorite films that you don't own.

Best:
1900 CE
Walt Disney Treasures Sets
Fawlty Towers (used to have this. Now that my local library has it, I sold it recently) Great series.

Worst:
Daredevil
A Knight's Tale
Intolerable Cruelty

Most Needeed:
La Commare secca Criterion (another Bertolucci that I will be picking up soon. Just sent my Netflix copy back - since you have 1900)
Saving Private Ryan (you have other Spielberg, why not this?)
More Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot is just a start).

-------------

Now someone can do me (if they want)!

Yarn is right. Damn fine is wrong.

X-2, Spiderman 2 were much better in recent years.

It tried to go dark and dark and dark and failed.

Just my take though.

Brazil is a couple of slots down from the top of my wishlist. Battle Of Algiers, I used to have, and sold it on her a couple of months ago. Got it when Barnes and Noble had that coupon out that one time. Might have to revisit it again at Netflix and think about it. The Killer? Hmm. That would be nice. Maybe scott can give me his cause I need it. Please?

Wrong Men & Notorious Women: Five Hitchcock Thrillers 1935-1946 – Fantastic collection from The Master
Star Wars Trilogy – another reason why DVDs were invented in the first place – the first reason being The Godfather Trilogy

Worst:
About a Boy (Full Screen) – FS?! Why?!
Solaris (2002) – not exactly a bad movie but I included it here because I thought you might like the original better
Fat Girl (Full Screen) (2001) – dump this & get the CC version if you really like this movie

You need:
24 - Season 2 & 3 – excellent TV IMO.
Crimson Rivers 2 disc set from R4 – since you have quite a number of titles from R4 & I think you might appreciate this genre.
The Exorcist – you seem to have some great horror titles in your collection & I think you need this

I’d write more but I think I’d respect the restriction for each of the categories. Great collection you have there.

Now I wish somebody would do mine as I’ve been skipped over

1900 is a bit of a sneaky entry actually. What I have is actually recorded from a Movie cable channel just before Christmas. It was originally on 3 DVD-r's but my brother (who works for another cable TV company, LOL) did an excellent editing job on it and it's now on ONE dual-layer disc. "One disc!", you say, "isn't the quality crap???". Actually no, it's very good, the source was a digital broadcast so it's immeasurably better than any VHS copy you may have. It's the full length version but unfortunately is the English dubbed version. Having said all that, I have yet to watch it, LOL!!.

1900 : see above
Disney Treasures : Absolute treasure (pardon the pun) troves, but I've still only scratched the surface.
Fawlty Towers : IMFFHO still the best TV sitcom ever made, British or American

My dvdprofiler is actually a couple of months out of date, which reminds me I should update it this weekend. Daredevil and Intolerable Cruelty are both now gone, funnily enough. A Knight's Tale is my wife's. I HOPE you were able to spot her DVDs in the collection, LOL.

La Commare Secca : I will certainly look into this.
Saving Private Ryan : The first 20 minutes were visually impressive, but after that it just didn't "do it" for me.
Wilder : True, my collection is lacking. Any recommendations? Actually, Some like it Hot is also my wife's, it's her favourite film!!

Interesting. I beg that this gets a decent, uncut release in the US soon. This movie screams for a Criterion release.

Update that thing! Scary stuff. And tell your wife to get her own. Hell, I can't say anything. I have some guilty pleasures that you would think are my wifes (if I had one and wanted one at this time).

La Commare Secca - A really good debut from Bertolucci. It bares resemblance to Kurosawa's Rashomon (in that they both tell multiple stories around a certain topic).

Saving Private Ryan - I can understand this, but I don't agree. I loved the film.

Wilder - Where do I begin? Since you have SLIT, definitely start with his comedies The Apartment, Sabrina (which is my favorite in this category. Gotta love Hepburn and Bogart - even though he couldn't stand her in real life), and The Seven Year Itch (another with Monroe). But his dramas are some of the best as well. Sunset Boulevard is compelling, Double Indemnity is a pot boiler (the good way), Stalag 17 has a good twist (you want to rip through the screen to tell everyone the secret). Top it all off with The Lost Weekend a scathing look at alcoholism.

So start with The Apartment (definite recommendation), then see how you and your wife like his dramas (my personal favorite in his drama category is Stalag 17, but I love them all. Not sure if your wife will be into it, though. There isn't a pretty blonde to grace the screen for the time of the movie. His most well known drama is Sunset Blvd, so do what you will.

Billy Wilder on IMDB
