Ron Mexico.

Best

Eight Diagram Pole Fighter - Excellent Fu flick and Alexander Fu Sheng is the bomb
Unforgiven
Do the Right Thing

Worst

Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy - blasphemy I know, but I thought it was a snoozefest.
Hero - Beautiful to look at but didn't like the movie. Flying Daggers despite its flaws was an overall better movie
Gangs of New York - Too much style really interfered with telling the story

Needed

You are in dire need of some classics! I'll stay gritty since you seem to like action.

Cape Fear (original) - Better imo than the remake.
Out the Past - Best Film Noir Film i've seen
I'm a Fugitive from a Chain Gang - Pre-code goodness

Yes i see what your saying. Older films dont have much replay value for me because of the pacing. Im going to get some Hitchcock and the Kurosawa box. A few quick questions since you seem to be a fan of both noir and Asian cinema. 1) what do u think the best Hitchcock films are. 2.) How do you rate Executioners from Shaolin 3.) why dont you have any non-Shaw kungfu man? lol.

This is for you now:

3 BEST:
Dark City
Amelie
The Girl on the Bridge - it's got Vanessa! Enough said! hahaha

3 WORST:
The English Patient - gagging....gagging....vomit!! Worst sex scene in history of filmmaking!
Saturday Night Fever - I just crapped myself
Italian for Beginners - worst dogma movie that I have ever seen. And false advertising - there is no Italy in this movie!

3 NEEDED: It seems you have a multi-region dvd player, but don't take advantage of all the non-region 1 dvds. So, Im going to list some non-region 1 must-haves for ya:
THE HOLY MOUNTAIN: you need this crazy obscure masterpiece from the 1970s
THE RED SQUIRREL: if you like Medem, try this bizzare one
DELICATESSAN: Since you have Amelie and City of Lost Children, you gotta get this Jeunut classic too![/url]
Thanks for the analysis toddly6666, it's always appreciated. Interesting that you enjoyed Natali's NOTHING more than his other films, as it's actually the one I like the least. An absurdly great idea, but I found said idea to be heavily flawed as a feature. As a short, I think it would be brilliant. Your aversion to the horror genre aside, I'll reiterate that you should at least rent A Tale Of Two Sisters. It's not a straight horror film, and there's just so much to appreciate about this one.

The English Patient is definitely a film with thats seems to have an equal number of fans and critics, so just consider me one of the former. I can't honestly defend Badham's Saturday Night Fever...there's just something about it I've always enjoyed. The characters populating Italian for Beginners is actually what I enjoyed more than the film itself, although, I must say, I've certainly seen my fair share of dogma films worse than this one.

The multi-region player is a fairly recent addition as I still have well over a hundred foreign tapes that I'm now slowly in the midst of replacing. Medem is also one of my favorite Spanish directers, and as far as The Red Squirrel is concerned, it's a stunning film and his best work IMO. I have the other recommendations on tape as well, but it's always nice to find someone with similar taste, and an appreciation for all things Vanessa

My personal favorite Hitchcock movies are

Strangers on a Train
North By Northwest
Rear Window
To Catch a Thief (warning, that this is primarily a romance movie)

Executioners from Shaolin is just OK. I find it to be too campy but it does feature some funny scenes like the kung fu wedding night and the the old master with the long beard who can retract his testicals as a defensive move. I would recommend Shaolin Temple, the prequel to 5 Shaolin Masters which you own, over it. The Celestial disc I own is non-anamorphic but it is otherwise of good quality.

I haven't really picked up much outside of the Shaw titles because I'm leery of getting poor quality DVDs. I find the Celestials to be of very high quality, particularly discs like 36th Chamber of Shaolin, so I've stuck with them. I'm not adverse to branching out. I have Warriors Two (HKL) on order and am looking at Magnificent Butcher. What is the quality of the disc you own?

Dr Dolittle 2

Honorable Mention: those damn Billy Jack movies

I'm laughing because all of the ones you picked are my wife's movies. Now I can tell her that I officiaally have better taste in movies than she does.

Most needed You have so many dvds maybe I overlooked them

Casino
A Bullet in the Head
City of God
Casino is in there, but the other two aren't. I'll have to check them out.

Toddly6666:

Thanks for the look.

1) I only own B & R because I am a completist and my 11 year old thinks it's cool (no pun intended!)
2) Dirty Dancing is my wife's DVD. She can't get enough of Swayze for some reason.
3) Saturday Night Fever I just picked up on a whim, because I have never seen the movie and I grew up when it came out. Still haven't watched it, though!

I have held the American Office Season One in my hand several times, but I still haven't bought it. I do love the English version. Maybe someday. Wish my DVD player was region free. I know I am missing out on a lot of great movies.

OK, here we go...

JSwarce:

Very nice collection... lots of good movies and tv-shows. Hard to pick the best ones.

Best:

Battlestar Galactica: Season One (TV doesn't get much better than this)

The Office (One of the best comedy series ever)

The Royal Tenenbaums: CC (Excellent movie and great DVD)

Worst:

The Lawnmower Man: New Line Platinum Series (I've have always hated this movie, Jeff Fahey is one of the most wooden actors around.)

Matrix Reloaded (One of the few times I almost walked out of the theater =)

Tomb Raider (Just plain bad, I'm not a fan of Jolie either)

Needed:

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou:CC (Everybody needs this movie

Maybe some international titles (Kurosawa etc.) or if you aren't interested in those then:

American classics from the 70's (Badlands, Point Blank, French Connection etc.)

Sick collection! We share very similar tastes when it comes to more fringe or foreign tastes ..

Best (Tough call ..)

Boondock Saints [thee definitive version of versions. Scanbox did such a wonderful job with the transfer of this title, I find that I can not say enough about it!!. Just wish I heard some more out of Scanbox releases]

Hanzo the Razor set and Lone Wolf and Cub series [the definitive versions (region 1 no less) of epic Shintaro proportions - anyone have a problem with it, slap it down biatch!]

R2 Alien Head [so, you know your LEs!!]

Le Dernier Combat [I never could get into silent films until I saw this one - Besson at his best]

Twilight Samurai [the best Samurai movie film that I have ever seen. Too bad you didn't have the LE]

Honorable Mention

Six String Samurai and Space Truckers [just two great oddball (borderline guilty pleasures) genre busters.

Alright, so I couldnt just pick just three (not even close)

Worst (Easier call ..)

Hellboy [Perlman is a fine actor, one who chooses his roles carefully .. most of the times]

Exit Wounds [an out dated Seagal .. and .. ummm, DMX .. oh boy!]

Farenheit 911 [Moore can take a flying f*** at the moon, period. No, no hostility ]

... though, why no Sonny Head to compliment the Alien Head???! It's back and available .. http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/...094850-6166742 ..

Recommended

Female Prisoner 701 series [You own Snowblood and Thriller .. but not Meiko Kaji's infamous comedic but intelligent WIP series . I'd recommend the Japanese R2 version, though it is not subbed]

The Hidden Blade R2 LE [Yamada's (Twilight Samurai Dir.) follow up Samurai release - written similarly to TS]

To round out your Sci Fi tastes .. give the R2 The Returner or the R2 DTS The Chronicles of Riddick a try ..

Based on your comedic tastes .. test out Kinji Fukasaku's Fall Guy. It's worth it .. as is most of Kinji's works. Yakuza Papers couldn't hurt either.

Also .. I'd recommend some of Ki-duk's stuff to round out some of your Asian films, Bad Guy or The Isle may be good starting points.

Lastly .. well, since you own Oshii's Avalon, I'll opt a chance at Innocence even though you're not a fan of anime. It certainly doesn't feel like it once you fall into its world. Also, the R2 Japanese version of Avalon if full bit rate and worth the upgrade. The R1 is dead in the water compared to the R3 SE .. the R2 is that much better!!

Peace ..

VISITOR Q,
you have such a good DVD collection out of all that I have seen in here (very similar to mine of course..haha). I had the most trouble finding movies that were bad. It's the first time ever where I looked in someone's collection and none of the American DVDs you owned bothered me. So this one was a challenge, and I could only separate your movies into the following categories:

BEST WELL-KNOWN 3:
BATTLE ROYALE - a masterpiece
AMELIE/DELICATESSEN/CITY OF LOST CHILDREN - three masterpieces
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM - last american masterpiece that I've seen

BEST OBSCURE 3:
THE TASTE OF TEA
ATOMIK CIRCUS
AVALON

WORST 3: I struggled and squirmed while trying to watch the following three movies because they were so poorly filmed and/or boring. Throw them in the trash, they are worthless:

SWORD IN THE MOON
THE BUTTERFLY/NABI
WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH

MOST PAINFUL 3 TO WATCH BUT NO ONE WILL AGREE WITH ME:
CHUNGKING EXPRESS - I couldn't even sell this DVD back to a USED DVD shop, not even for 4 dollars. I hate this movie.
IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE - Wow! It's a different movie - chinese people standing around looking pretty in 1950s costumes in a film noir background! How original! baloney...it's crap...I'm glad I just rented this piece of crap. It saved me from renting 2046.
FRIEND/JSA: two of the most homoerotic Korean pieces of crap films...These two movies should be in the Special Interest section of the video store! I've seen male friendship/bonding movies and there was nothing of that sort in these two. (SILMIDO did the better job of male friendship/bonding) - these Korean dudes were flirting with each other and wanted to cuddle the whole time. Two overrated films....

MOST NEEDED 3: I can tell we both like currentish movies, so Im not gonna recommend old movies which you don't need in your collection. Since you like Asian films, I'm gonna recommend you my favorites that you must own:

GODZILLA FINAL WARS: throw away VERSUS, this is the ultimate Ryuhei Kitamura movie!
SURVIVE STYLE 5+ : this is the Japanese version of MAGNOLIA with Vinnie Jones!
MIND GAME: this is the best Japanese animated movie since AKIRA

My Worthless Collection - http://www.intervocative.com/DVDColl...spx/toddly6666

Haha ... nice, Todd.

Thanks for your version. It's cool. Interesting enough .. all three of the three Worst I would totally agree with. ...all blind buys (Warriors was a freebie though) gone wrong too. Damn .. Fox gotta pick that one up. Want them real cheap??!

Can't believe your knockin Versus or JSA though .. even Silmido!!!! They weren't that bad considering what they were. Actually, even though I own a few Kitamura films, I think the guy puts up mostly uninteresting crap. Versus however totally rocked for it's senseless crap and I still to this day believe it wasn't completely intentional.

Slick collection you have though ... I see the similarities. Avalon R2 ... very nice!!!

Thanks for the Hitchcock list. The only movie I have seen by him is "The Birds". My classics collection is growing I picked up Manchurian Candidate and Citizen Kane today for 5 bucks a piece. I might watch them this weekend.

Re: Executioners from Shaolin. I heard that the movie was tied to Fist of the White Lotus and i loved that movie. The retracting white bearded testicle dude is Pai Mei. LOL. I was lead to "Fist" by Kill Bill.

Re: Shaolin Temple, I wanted it because I have heard the same thing you have said about it. On a sidenote, I recommend the Jet Li version of Shaolin Temple as well. Its hard to find but worth it.

Re: Non-Celestial DVDs: I know what you mean about picking up the low quality kung fu stuff. The Fortune Star stuff is great place to start. I have 3 of their videos Prodigal son, Knockabout, Mag Butcher. They all range in quality from Good to Excellent (video quality as well as the actual movies). I haven't picked up Warriors Two but Im becoming a Sammo Hung fan so its inevitable.

Scanbox usually releases the budget releases here in Finland, but sometimes a special edition slips through. I just bought a two-disc version of Stalingrad.

I opted for the HK release of TS because the Japanese one was so expensive.
It is a pretty good release compared to the R1 or R2 UK.

I have always thought that Hellboy was a good adaptation of the original comic book material. At least Perlman is great in this. The DE has some great extra materials.

Exit Wounds is part of my Seagal Collection. The man is hilarious. 'nuff said

I wasn't that impressed with F911 either... it was cheap so I picked it up.

I did not like 'I, Robot' so I won't buy the head either... I only buy LEs of the movies I like.

Female Prisoner 701 series [You own Snowblood and Thriller .. but not Meiko Kaji's infamous comedic but intelligent WIP series . I'd recommend the Japanese R2 version, though it is not subbed]

Female Prisoner-series is on my wishlist. Hidden Blade is on order, although I ordered the HK release again. Did not care about Riddick that much.

I have seen Innocence and probably pick it up someday. I wasn't that impressed with it. I prefer the Stand Alone Complex series.

I'm quite happy with my Australian Avalon-release.

Thanks for the great analysis and suggestions!

----------------------

Quick analysis of VisitorQ's collection:

GREAT collection... extremely hard to pick the best ones, because there are so many great titles.

Let's start with worst ones:

Pearl Harbor: 60th Anniversary Edition (extras might be extensive, but the movie is one of the worst ever)

Shaolin Soccer: DTS (never liked this type of wire-fu action comedies)

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace: Widescreen (no further explanation needed, the biggest disappointment EVER)

Recommended

More Jim Jarmusch films (Down by Law, Dead Man etc.)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: CC (one of Gilliam's best and a stellar release)

After the Rain - Ame Agaru (great little samurai flick, Japanese release seems to be the best, I have the cheapo French disc without subtitles )

Samurai Champloo anime-series (From Shinichirô Watanabe, almost as good as Cowboy Bebop)

It's impossible to pick the best ones, but here are some of my favorites:

Grosse Pointe Blank (Quite possibly Cusack's best film, the European release is anamorphic BTW)

Buckaroo Banzai (No matter where you go, there you are!)

American Splendor (great performance by Giamatti)

Band of Brothers (the best TV-miniseries ever aired)

My collection @ dvdaf

This one is for Badmutha's collection.

I tried my best to pick some off the wall choices rather than many of the obvious ones.

The Best
1. Down By Law - I've wanted this one for a while. I love Jim Jarmusch... can't wait for Broken Flowers.
2. Punch Drunk Love - I may get stoned to death for this, because everyone else I know pretty much hated this. But I absolutely loved it. Wonderful film.
3. Barton Fink - One of the Coen Brothers' most underrated, least seen movies. (Except maybe Blood Simple... but Barton Fink I think deserves more credit.)

The Worst
1. Insomnia - The Al Pacino/Robin Williams version. I've seen the original Stellan Skarsgard version and I liked it a lot better actually. I know this is a horribly overused insult for the movie, but this version is the cure to insomnia.
2. Punisher - Dolf Lundgren is enough explanation. Sadly, I own this too.
3. House of 1000 Corpses - I have no idea why Rob Zombie got into making movies. I just don't understand the appeal.

My Recommended Movies - It was kind of hard to think of some, since you have so many good ones. But here are a couple I picked out that most people generally don't have...
1. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead - Has anyone ever seen this? It's a parody of Hamlet... or rather it's a spin off. I really liked this, and I was so happy when it came out on DVD.
2. Wait Until Dark - I don't know why, when Audrey Hepburn movies are mentioned, this movie never crosses anyone's mind. I thought it was great. So underrated. Plus, one of my favorite Alan Arkin roles.
3. Mother Night - Not sure if anyone saw this, but it's my favorite Nick Nolte movie.

Anyhow, go ahead and pick apart my collection. I have many bad movies that I'd like to strike from my collection, but I just can't on the basis that I hardly ever get rid of anything.

Oh yes... bought this the day it came out. I love this series far more than Star Wars.
Underworld - 2-Disc Unrated Extended Cut
Stander (good movie that not many people know about)
Did anyone else but you or me see this one? Haha. Anyways, I think if Thomas Jane acted half as good in the Punisher, the movie would have been twice as better.

worst
The 6th Day (I love Ah-nuld, but hated this movie)
Yeah.. what can I say? No excuses. Shame on me. I think this may have been part of a 3 DVD sale thing. Not sure.
Godzilla
Super cheap. Jean Reno. I went for it, haha.
Super Mario Bros.
You know... I was with some friends at Toys R Us and picked it up cheap for nostalgia's sake.... and nostalgia honestly couldn't get me to sit through this again. I have never watched this DVD all the way through.

most needed
Rushmore - The Criterion Collection
I love Wes Anderson and Bill Murray, but Jason Schwartzman is the only thing keeping me from getting this. Perhaps I should just go ahead.... but I really dislike him.
Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (more Johnny Depp movies)
I used to have Fear and Loathing, but I think someone borrowed it and never gave it back. Was the Criterion version too... grr.
Alien (you have AvP and Aliens, but not the best of the series)
Actually I've been holding off to try and get the Quadrilogy... I really want it, but everytime I have enough money I think about the fact that I own Aliens already. It's hard for me to break down and get boxed sets. I'm poor. :-(
The Crow (you have the sequel, but not the better original)
Honestly, I didn't get this because I liked it. I got this because I love Mia Kirshner. Her and Jennifer Connelly can get me to buy just about anything. (Except for Connelly's 'Of Love And Shadows'... I have yet to give in to that.) Not Another Teen Movie will also be a painful purchase for Kirshner if I ever break down and get it.
Thanks for the review, I like your list!

Hhhmm, this shouldn't take too long

Best 3
The Matrix
Memento
Fight Club

Worst 3
Das Boot
Dawn of the Dead
The Adventures of Indiana Jones

Most needed 3
I won't mention any 'upgrades' to better editions but here are 3 that you might like based on what you already have:

Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions (they work best as a trilogy)
After Hours (You have Taxi Driver but this is Scorsese's best)
The Terminator (How can you own the sequel without owning the original?)

Indiana Jones is okay, but it was better when I was a kid. Das Boot and the original Dawn of the Dead bored me senseless.
