Alright Sessa .. I'm breaking the rules and dropping some opinion on your collection ...

Best

No brainer ... Kill Bill 1 - Japanese LE Let's put it this way, I'm jealous, but practical. Great set .. just a tad outta my price range.

Lone Wolf and Cub as a series. Great stuff with a bit of everything. Excellent DVD production as well.

ties for third:

City of Lost Children Great French fantasy/Sci-F- by the same director of Amelie and Delicatessen. Incredible imagination and story telling.

Real Genius and Ice Pirates .. what 80's comedy was all about!

Lastly .. the obligatory Seventh Samurai reference as well as Battle Royale - SE. Two remarkable films with the former probably being one of the greatest films created depending on which side of the pond you're on.

Worst

Street Fighter .. the reason why ... "dubbed", period ... ?!?!?!?! Bad news. Sick series .. especially the first Street Fighter.

Charlie's Angels I love the leading ladies like the next guy, but sloppy, uninvolving .. borderline ridiculous story. I'm ashamed ... heh.

The Cell I just didn't get this one .. other than being a contrived plot line. Otherwise, an art-house attempt at a serial killer theme. Thank goodness for CGI .. or this one may have had some substance.

Honorable mention: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Overrated. Yes, I do own this .. and as it does have it's moments, it also goes the other way. Some of the worst wire-fu effects that I've ever seen. The strong acting cast brought this to at least to par for me .. but I was expecting much greater .. even though, this film is a good intro for western audiences. I actually tried the DVD dubbed because I was for a lack of better words, lazy one night, and I almost had to heave it was so bad. Who knows .. maybe just me.

The Needed

1) Twilight Samurai a great dramatic samurai tale about class structure, code and meaning of life in general revolving around a lower class samurai and the life he leads .. if only for a moment. Although the fight scenes are minimal, the last one is one of the most realistic fight scenes I have ever been exposed to in a film. Highly recommended.

2) Yakuza Papers Kinji Fukasaku's Japanese Gangster set. You own Shogun's Samurai and Battle Royale by the same director .. well, I've been through the first three disks of the set (and as much I enjoy gangster films) and I've never been through a more complexly weaved out and interesting selection in my life. It's quite frankly the antithesis to the Italian Godfather series and I'd rank it better because of its consistency across the set, whereas Godfather died after the first film in the set.

3) Le Dernier Combat (the Last Battle) A cool little post-apocalyptic French sci fi film by Luc Besson. It's entirely non-verbal and done extremely well. It's essentially about a loner/drifter and his plight after a devastating war that has limited civilization to a minimum. It follows his adventure and the characters he meets that seem to change him as the story flows. Very interesting film, but it may be a take it or leave it scenario.

Honorable Mention: Three Outlaw Samurai, 2LDK and Rainy Dog (a favorite of Miike Takashi) and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (a lil' hardcore Korean thriller) ... check 'em out ..

now that's an offer i certainly can't refuse...

Best:
1. "Battle Royale Special U.K. NTSC Edition " (i've been looking for awhile for a decent price on this NTSC version. nice score!)
2. "Reservoir Dogs - Ten Years Special Edition (Mr. Brown)" (the only version to have!)
3. "The Killer" (any version is a great version to have of this John Woo classic!)

Worst:
1. "Saved By The Bell" (i mean it was ok on tv, but to buy two seasons?)
2. "The Golden Girls" (your collection didn't strike me as one owned by a 90 year old, no offense if you are though...seriously )
3. "About Schmidt" (i just didn't like it that much, but i could see other people liking it and you seem to dig the big guy)

Most Needed:
1. "Brazil: Criterion Collection" (with under 100 titles you have a very nice Criterion collection, you should have one of the best.)
2. "The Godfather Collection" (unless my eyes were decieving me, you have like no gangster flicks...no gangster flicks!!)
3. -tie- "Easy Rider SE" & "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest SE" (you seem to dig Jaaackkk...have what I think are his greatest and absolute classics to boot!! (there not even on your wish list...for shame!))

1. Saved By The Bell is a friggin classic. Oh and I always get a kick out of watching a few episodes right after I watch Showgirls.
2. The Golden Girls (went in half and half on the cost with my mama, but the show is funny as hell).
3. Loved the film (one of his best! and yes Nicholson is the man)

I used to have all of those, actually. Sold each and everyone for money. College life is tough when you want beer over dvds (of course I am always drunk when I sell them ) or have some out of the blue bill you have to pay.

But really, the reason I sold those (except for Brazil) was that my local library carries them and I usually can see them when I want - just a few miles away. Of course, I want Brazil again and the new Easy Rider is somewhat tempting.

They also carry some of the Criterions I have, but I didn't want to give those up.

---------------------

Best:
Kill Bill Set
Brazil: Criterion (getting this soon)
Killer: Criterion (wow!) I used to have Salo (no really)...so there.

Worst:
Daredevil (one version is too many)
The Hitcher 2 WTF?
Cabin Fever (no. just no. )

Most Needed:
-Blood Simple !
-the rest of the Criterion Kurosawas (i'm working my way there slowly but surely)
-try something like On The Waterfront or A Streetcar Named Desire

From one new member to another...I'll do Grolim (who has quite a few region 2's and 4's I might add). Oops just figured out he's not from these parts! And I feel as if I've bitten off more than I can chew..he's got huge collection.

Best 3:

Heat - Two-Disc Special Edition (have to get mine soon!)
Office, The - The Christmas Specials (fantastic finale to a great series!)
Bourne Identity (guilty pleasure - have watched this one 5+ times)

Worst 3:

Forgive me!

Just Married
Kate + Leopold
I Spy

Most needed 3:

The Third Man (very good release from criterion and plus you don't really have any film noir - so maybe not a bad place to start)
The Mummy (I know you have the Mummy returns, but the first one was better IMHO)
Speed - Five Star Collection (another nicely done dvd..fantastic action flick)

As an aside anyone picking the best 3 as dvds you don't have - but would definitely buy and the most needed 3 as dvds you have but the person you are judging doesn't. Not saying I'm doing this..but it could be one way to, I suppose.

heart, i had such an affinity to your collection because of one title i simply had to do you...

Best:
1. "Return of the Aliens: The Deadly Spawn " (...and this is the title. we seem to share a similar taste in schlock!)
2. "The Thing CE" (sometimes we just forget the smaller masterpieces)
3. "True Romance Unrated DC" (one of my all time favorites, QT at his early best!)

Worst:
1. "Double Dragon" (that's all i have to say about that)
2. "Spawn" (all those versions? when was there a 2 & 3?)
3. "Formula 51" (i couldn't even watch 5 minutes.)

Most Needed:
1. "South Park S 4 & 5" (slacker...)
2. "Raging Bull" (this should just be a mainstay in everyone's collection...everyone's!!)
3. "Kill Bill vol. 1 & vol. 2" (two of my all time favorites, QT at this latest best!!)

Okay, Monkfish, here ya go!

So many great ones, here's three of the best:

Seven Samurai
Star Wars Trilogy
tie: Sound of Music / Black Adder: The Complete Collector's Set

worst:

The Mummy Returns
Saving Private Ryan (the opening & closing battle scenes were pure genius & deserve to be watched every Veteran's Day; the actual movie is pure schmaltz)
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (we waited for two decades and got Jar Jar Binks? WTF?!)

need:

The Office Specials (this cannot be emphasized enough)
Spartacus (you have good taste & seem to like classics, action/war movies & Critereons)
Three Kings (a war movie/satire/dark comedy - it's excellent)

Best:
Spartacus: Criterion (Not much to be said)
River's Edge (I've been jonesing to see this lately)
Contact (Unfairly criticized, great epic emotional movie)

Worst:
Bull Durham (Kevin Costner = no)
Romeo Must Die (no comment)
Speed (no comment)

Needed:
Some Keaton (Insert assertion of superiority over Chaplin here)
Machurian Candidate SE (Upgrade)
More Coen brothers (You don't want to be unearthed after a catastrophic volcanic ashfall and have them find "O Brother" as your only Coens DVD, do you?)

Note to Y2J850: You grade the person immediately above your post. You done skipped me.

Note to self: Well it looks like this thread has abandoned all semblance of order anyway.

Ya damn skippy!!! Nothing truer said today ...

The premise behind it just reaffirms my belief that the green making machine that is Hollywood is dead, period, end of story. All of the originality is coming from overseas.
