Best 3, Worst 3, Most needed 3

I have to say, I did steal this idea from a thread here at DVDTalk ages ago and brought it over to the DVDProfiler forums .. and it seems to still have success. So, to whomever the credit goes to here at DVDTalk .. thank you.

Anyway, I'd like to resurrect its life over here at DVDTalk and see how far it goes. It sucks with some of the users having a collection size well over the ADHD generation's limit not to be a nuisance, but hey, it's all in good fun and benefit. I'd put it in the movie forum, but there's not enough exposure there. Realistically, I was just viewing Sessa's collection and noticed that we have a huge range in similarity and thought hit me to steal this idea again .. as I would have a few to suggest to him/her...

The obligatory rules:

1) Review the DVD list of the person above you * and reply with your opinion on the best 3, worst 3 and 3 most needed (as the title implies) films on DVD that he or she owns and needs.

2) With respect to those who contribute, everyone participating needs to have a link to their collection. Simply put, if you offer an opinion of another user's collection, then you should in return accept equal reciprocation. I think that's fair.

3) Feel free to contribute as many times as you would like. Quite possibly, the last reviewer of your own collection may not have submitted to you what you wanted to hear. No harm, it's all in good fun and just be sure not to take anyone's "opinion" too far. Then again, if you run into too many 1K+ collection sizes .. well, that's the catch.

* Review the last "person above you" that actually reviewed his/her preceding reviewer - and so on.

Cool, I didn't think anyone ever looked at my sig. You have good taste indeed, as does the person above me.

Dawg, here ya go.

BEST
Band of Outsiders - The Criterion Collection - I instantly respect any collection with it.
Videodrome - The Criterion Collection
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - The Criterion Collection

WORSE
Lost in Translation - One of the most overrated films ever.
Punch-Drunk Love - Superbit Deluxe
Sunset Boulevard - Special Collector's Edition - Only b/c I love every other movie you own, except this one.

MOST NEEDED
ExistenZ - My fav. Cronenberg film, & you seem to dig him.
Brotherhood of the Wolf 3-Disc Set - Trust me you'll love the hell out of it.
Equillibrium - Just run out & buy it now

We have pretty much the same taste, so you are easy to recommend stuff to.

scott1598's:

A nice collection. Was hard picking only three for the Best and hard to find three for the Worst.

Best:
1 - Straw Dogs
2 - Irreversible (CAN)
3 - Sex and Lucia

Worst:
1 - Insomnia (re-make vastly inferior to original)
2 - Harold & Kumar (I also bought it too, but hope to soon rid myself of it)
3 - Cabin Fever

Most Needed:
1 - Citizen Kane
2 - Dr. Strangelove
3 - Treasure of the Sierra Madre (or better: Warner Legends Collection)
(4 - Warner Gangsters Collection (everyone should own this set))

Best (You have a ton of good movies, so it was pretty hard to pick the best, so I just picked a few of my favorites)
Jaws
Usual Suspects
Magnolia

Worst
Starship Troopers
Tie Star Wars Episode I and II
Zoolander

Need
Cube--you have Cube 2 and Cube Zero but not the original
Jurassic Park--you have the 3rd one, but not the 1st which is vastly superior
The Godfather--again you have 2 and 3, but not the original

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to link my guzzlefish collection, but you can just cut and paste.

Oh how I'd love to get ahold of your collection. I could learn so much about new types of films I know little about.

Best
The Red Desert (In terms of how rare it is.)
The Godfather Trilogy
Citizen Kane

Worst
Star Trek DVDs (All tied, heh.)
Matrix, the second and third one
Young Guns II

Most Needed
Black Hawk Down 3-disc set
The Third Man Criterion Collection
Naked Lunch Criterion Collection

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?id=brentlumkin (I have the main Owned folder, then three more folders for Box Sets, Pro. Wrestling, and Criterions.)

stake my claim to Brent's...I like his collection, might take me a bit...

Best:
1. "I, Robot" with "Sonny" head (the movie was ok, but that head is freggin awesome!)
2. "Alien Quadrilogy" (what really needs to be said here?)
3. "Nightmare on Elm Street Collection" (I just love Freddy!)

Worst:
1. "Baby's Day Out" (Wha??, the one that just doesn't fit into such a great collection)
2. "The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour" (Divorced!, the other one that just doesn't fit into such a great collection)
3. "Welcome to Mooseport" (Too bad Gene!, the third one that just doesn't fit into such a great collection)

Most Needed:
1. More "South Park" (you have 1 & 2, I am just getting into it and loving it!!, I see it's on your wish list, maybe time to step up)
2. You have some good Criterions, but no Kurosawa?
3. "Full Metal Jacket" or "Platoon" or "Born of the 4th" or "Apocalypse Now" (you have some great series' "Band of Brothers" and "D-Day: Remembered", but not a lot of titles. Maybe you are just into WWII and not Vietnam which could be)

I'll rate your collection, but you'll have to get another long timer to "do" you.

Best:
Clerks X (great movie with greating documentary on the disc)
ET CE(it was released the same month I was born...I have a soft spot for the movie)
Memento LE

Worst:
Chicago (I feel it was quite overrated)
Galaxy Quest DTS
Time Bandits (just couldn't get into that movie)

Need:
Clerks Animated (you have Clerks X, this is a hilarious follow-up, with funny commentaries on all 6 episodes, and can easily be had for $10 or less)
Seinfeld Seasons 1/2 & 3 (you have Friends but not Seinfeld? Sacrilege!)
Snow White Platinum Edition (you have all the other PE releases, but not the original Disney animated film? Get this if you can find it)

Unfortunately DVDProfiler hasn't worked with my computer for a whwile now, so my collection hasn't been updated recently, but over 400 of my titles are there, so good enough.

your turn scotty boy...also, where did you get the "American Graffiti: Collector's Edition" standalone DVD?

Best:
1. "A Bug's Life: Collector's Edition" (one of the firsts and such a beautiful presentation on 2-discs)
2. "The Godfather Collection" (speaks for itself)
3. "Halloween: Autographed!" (I don't know who it is autographed by, but that sounds like it has some great kitch value)

Worst:
1. "Josie and the Pussycats" (real hard time narrowing down some of the schlock)
2. "Shallow Hal" (this movie just made me sad)
3. -tie-"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II & III" (not much to say about that)

Most Needed:
1. "It's A Wonderful Life" (you have some Capra docus I believe, but not this classic)
2. "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" (looks like you have some music stuff, rock/punk/ska and metal, plus other docus..this is a soon to be classic docu)
3. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (you have a docu on Michel Gondry the music video director, maybe you should step up to one of his magnificent theatrical videos)

scott1598,

Best:

1. Beauty and the Beast - This was my favourite movie for a long time. Excellent transfer, wealth of extras.

2. Once Upon A Time In America - My second favourite movie right now, and while the transfer and extras aren't anything to write home about, it presents the movie the way Leone wanted it.

3. Straw Dogs: Criterion Collection - The commentary track is the most useful and informative commentary I've had the pleasure of listening to, and Hoffman gives an amazing performance.

Worst:

1. Austin Powers: Goldmember - It felt tired, almost like a parody of itself.

2. Friends: The Series Finale - An unremarkable episode after 10 seasons of an unremarkable sitcom. Maybe I just never connected with the characters, but I found the whole thing to be quite banal.

3. The Matrix Revolutions - I hated all three Matrix films (although, oddly enjoyed The Animatrix) but even hardcore fans should be able to see this movie for what it is: bloated action sequence after bloated action sequence.

Need:

1. 8 1/2: Criterion Collection
2. Cannibal: The Musical
3. Cinema Paradiso
