Willh51, your collection makes me think you like movies that really show off a surround-sound system because there are a lot of demo disc type titles there. Here's my take:
Best:
- Alien Quadrilogy (although the final movie is craptacular, the other three are great, great, good (extended) and this is a great Collector's Set)
- Fight Club - Special Edition (great DVD edition that was one of the first to kick off the 2-Disc-Packed-to-the-Teeth DVDs)
- Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - Collector's Edition (great movie in the preferred CE version. The fact that you got this version means you like the movie probably as much as I do.)
Worst:
- Collateral Damage (I'm a fan of Arnold's action movies, but this one is pretty bad AND it even has a title that he can't pronounce!)
- Bad Boys 2 (This was an Xmas present that you couldn't take back, right?)
- Armageddon: Criterion Collection (I know it's Criterion... but it's Armageddon too!)
Needs:
- The Exorcist - The Original Version (the original 1973 cut is superior to the "Version You've Never Seen" cut)
- Given that The Rock and Armageddon are the only two Criterion titles in you collection, you need to get more Criterion movies, but not ones directed by Michael Bay (...if anymore somehow make it on the Criterion list).
- More older movies (i.e. pre-1975 movies), definitely need more older movies!

And here's my all-over-the-map DVD collection (fire away

Thanks dhmac! I completely agree about the Alien Quad and the quality of the movies, Alien 3 is good extended and that last film is just...skippable. I do love Master and Commander and that disc is nice, especially in the sound department! I'm guessing you don't much like Mike Bay films, however I have a soft spot for Bad Boys 2. It is pathetic that Rock and Armageddon are my only Criterions, I will be working on that in the future. The Hitchcock Collection, which you may not have seen since it's under a subcategory of dvds I've acquired since June, helped me out with my pre-1975 films so I'm working on that too.

dhmac , just discovered what this thread and definitely want to take part
Best:
Eraserhead- always impressive to see people who have this for the simple fact that you couldn't just order it from Amazon for so long. What a strangely beautiful film, and the interview with Lynch somehow feels equally bizarre
MST3K (wow, I wish I had all those)
Purple Rose of Cairo- one of Woody Allen's best; definitely underrated and overlooked
Worst-
Underworld- while I can understand some of the appeal of this movie in a home theater (cool visuals and sound), what a horrible movie
Qatsi Trilogy- watching the entire quatsi trilogy in a film class last year was the equivalent of pulling teeth, the dvd might be redeemable with some nice extras, but these things are barebones
The Mexican- Pirates of the Carribean was fun, the Ring was sort of scary, but other than having two of the biggest stars in Hollywood and James Gandolfini playing a sensitive tough guy (isn't that what he does on the Soprano's anyway?), this is Gore Verbinski's big stinker
Needed:
Clerks X- upgrade to this disc for the excellent documentary as well as all the other great extras
Nashville- Saw you had MASH and The Long Goodbye. Nashville is definitely a must view for Altman.
Batman:TAS Vol. 2 and 3: Finish off this collection before you even think about getting Batman Begins

rmick, your collection looks a lot like mine, so that means you're cool.
Best:
Fight Club - One of the all time great DVDs/movies.
Following - I respect anyone who has heard of this movie, let alone owns it.
Brazil CC - I admire people who have this DVD. I want it so bad, but can never justify the price tag.
Worst:
Big Daddy - I just really hate this movie.
Dawson's Creek -
Serendipity - the definitive chick flick. If you like that sort of stuff, more power to you, I guess.
Most needed:
Clockwork Orange - definitely up your alley.
The Great Escape - You have some great classic movies in there, this should be one of them.
South Park - You have the movie, where are the season sets?! These are must-owns!
You really have a nice collection. Going from personal taste, my only change would be the addition of more horror. You seem to cover a wide range of genres (a characteristic of a great collection), but you're a little low on horror.

Dhmac, it looks like we have very similar tastes, so...
Best 3
For All Mankind: The Criterion Collection...a beautiful, lyrical account of a "meta" Apollo mission, from launch to splashdown, pieced together from the home movies of the Apollo astronauts.
Se7en: New Line Platinum Series...still (IMHO) the best-looking DVD of all time with some nice features and excellent packaging. Richard Roundtree and R. Lee Ermey are a plus. "Lust" still creeps me the hell out. A classic.
Ed Wood: Special Edition...one of the few non-Batman Burton movies I can stand is my favorite movie about the movies. Bill Murray's blue period started here and has never been better. Johnny Depp before he started winking at the audience, and a fantastic, rain-soaked ending.
Worst 3
Austin Powers in Goldmember - Infinifilm...is the Batman & Robin of Mike Myers spy comedies. A solid argument against completists.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* But Were Afraid to Ask...I can sit stonefaced through any and every Woody Allen movie. Annie Hall and Manhattan are sweet in their own creepy little way, but...meh.
The Mexican...stinks. IMHO, of course.
Need 3
Based on what may be your tastes, but mostly on my tastes:
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)...I have a feeling that David Lynch is heavily influenced by this film. A very creepy, somehow claustrophobic, and "sweaty" movie that makes you want to wipe your face every time Lawrence Harvey appears on screen. Janet Leigh is a tour de force. Just listen to her lines and the way she delivers them. Cagey camera angles abound - it's no wonder that Jonathan Demme remade this.
The Fly (Cronenberg)...a seemingly straight-up horror movie about Jeff Goldblum turning into a bug. About a week after having it stuck in your head (and your gut), it's nice to have around to rewatch and figure out why its so damn good. There's a lot to mine in Cronenberg's movies, and this is a good place to start. The Dead Zone is another flick that should get you into his films.
The Maxx: The Complete MTV Series...is the greatest cartoon of the Liquid Television-era MTV shows. A very complex story with complex emotions about the effects of a terrible crime perpetrated on an innocent. Not available on DVD.
You need to see this - seems like it's right up your alley.
...and one to grow on!
Hoop Dreams: The Criterion Collection...quite possibly the greatest American film of all time. The greatest is The Bicycle Thief, which you should also own.
cheers,
-the Jesus

Wow, I got 2 responses!
And since both singled out The Mexican, I'll actually defend it because I don't think it's a bad movie. In fact, it's one of the few "quirky comedy" movies I actually like. Yeah, it's flawed and could've done without Julia Roberts entirely and been greatly improved (what movie wouldn't be?), but the Brad Pitt sections are pretty good as everything goes wrong for him that could possibly go wrong. And the different versions of the story of the pistol are all fantastic. This movie is what made me notice Gore Verbinski's talent, so I wasn't at all surprised by the high quality of his later films.

All in all a really strong collection, with a little bit everything and only a few discs that I would dump on.
Gattaca
One False Move
Punch-Drunk Love
Crash ('05) - Hamhanded "issues" film, lacks depth and is about as subtle as Ted Nugent at a Democratic convention.
Mystery Science Theater 3000's - I never found these things to be even remotely entertaining, In fact I kind of despise the very concept.
Zatôichi - Kitano, took a can't miss formula that had been done well many times in the past and churned out a rather souless piece of mundane junk.
-needed-
Crash - replace the afwul Paul Haggis flick, with Cronenberg's masterpiece of the same name.
Pretty much any non-Kitano Zatôichi film.
Blood Simple - You have several Coen Brothers movies and this is one of their best films.

You have an interesting collection, chileorgullo. We seem to have very different taste - there's a lot of stuff there I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole - but you also have a lot of stuff that I really, really like. Go figure. Anyway:
3 Best (this was hard to narrow down)
Three Kings (Underrated Gulf War era satire)
In the Mood for Love (A beautiful and beautifully shot film)
Almost Famous (great story, great performances, great coming of age movie)
3 Worst
8 Mile (I'd heard such good things about this one and just didn't like it at all)
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Full screen, and I hate Jim Carrey)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (My little brother was way into Ninja Turtles for a while - can't stand 'em)
Needed
Fargo/Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? (You seem to like the Coen brothers. Fargo's a favorite of mine & Oh Brother is brilliant - I couldn't pick between them)
Broken Arrow (You also clearly like John Woo. This was his first US flick. I've only seen it once, but I remember finding it pretty entertaining.)
Nine Queens (I saw you had Matchstick Men. While you don't seem to like foreign language movies, if you decide you want to challenge yourself this is a neat little con artist flick from Argentina. Hey - it's the same language as your nic!
)
Oh, whoever does mine - I'm well aware of the suckage that is Romeo Must Die. I revile it as well. I'd be more interested in hearing your other pans because that one is a given.

KITKAT, this one's for ya!
3 BEST:
AMELIE
FREAKS AND GEEKS:THE COMPLETE SERIES
SLACKER
3 WORST:
THE SOUND OF MUSIC ( I love musicals, but come on, man!)
BRINGING UP BABY ( I'm gagging!)
THE HOURS ( bleaach...i'm sorry..I couldn't keep it in!)
NEEDED:
UNDERGROUND (I like your foreign movies - well check out one of the best foreign movies ever made - it's done by Emir Kusturica and he's in the same league as Gilliam and Jeuneut)
FIREFLY:THE COMPLETE SERIES (You like Josh Weddon's Buffy, check this series out - a mixture of action, comedy, western, and sci-fi... I see you've got the best tv shows on DVD - Curb your enthusiasm and Freaks and Geeks, so it fits into your collection)
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE: I see you like black and white old movies, most of those movies from that time make me seriously gag...so check this one out on DVD - it's got your favorite - Cary Grant in it..it's a really timeless movie that hasn't dated and one of the few that I like from that time...
My Collection - http://www.intervocative.com/DVDColl...spx/toddly6666 (Ignore my Wishlist on my DVDProfiler...those are DVDs I have and "wish" to get rid of)

DVD Talk Ultimate Edition
Best:
L'Appartement (great film but my guess you sought it out because of Monica Bellucci and Romane Bohringer ... not that I blame you)
The Producers (first rate comedy)
The Works of Michel Gondry, terrific director, terrific DVD
Worst:
Van Helsing (not even worth commenting on)
Team America (likewise)
Meet the Parents (comedy without soul or spirit)
Needs:
No Hitchcock? Come on. Time to diversify away from films with the ultraviolence and enjoy some great movies. I would suggest North by Northwest to start and see how it connects to L'Appartement. Second choice: Cohen Brothers' Blood Simple.
More Kubrick. I would suggest Dr. Strangelove. Second choice: A Clockwork Orange and where I got the word ultraviolence to begin with.
Films a little more uplifting and human. Try Lost In Translation. Terrific film. Second choice: just keep building your basis needs ... such as what Sophia's father has produced ... such as The Godfather.
I give up my spot to whoever wants it. My collection has already been done a few times

Thanks for the bonus, chileorgullo! Good movies all. True Romance is already on my mental wish list, and I really do need to see some good old HK John Woo again - it's been a while.

JSWARCE:
3 BEST:
Army of Darkness
Reindeer Games (I thought I was the only one that loved this movie. Ya got balls for puttting this flick in your list)
Dark City
3 WORST:
Batman & Robin (There is a new dvd edition coming out tomorrow...please oh please at least, don't upgrade to that one. Buying this DVD once is more than enough)
Dirty Dancing (Please tell me this dvd is in your collection for the girlfriends you bring home. If you are married or have a girlfriend, please tell me this is her DVD)
Saturday Night Fever (See Dirty Dancing note)
3 MOST NEEDED:
THE OFFICE: SEASON ONE (American Version). You like tv shows and the British version. Check this version out. It's funny as hell in its own way. Don't worry it's not like the American remake of Coupling.
NIGHT WATCH (Notnoi Dozor). If you like Blade, Harry Potter, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Terry Gilliam, and Underworld, you gotta buy this Russian movie - it's a combination of all of the above! It's sold as Region 1 NTSC on Russian online stores by the way, not in American shops...
MY NAME IS NOBODY - a great western I think you should add to your DVD list.

Haven't participated in one of these for awhile, so here goes...
toddly6666,
Best:
Atomik Circus - A truly off the wall film, plus, it's got Vanessa...nuff said.
L'appartement - Simply wonderful, and some delicious eyecandy to boot. I really need to replace my vhs copy of this.
Lovers of the Arctic Circle - One of Medem's best, and yet another vhs I need to get rid off.
Worst:
Star Wars Prequels - Abominations IMO, but then you do have the original trilogy, so for completists sake, they're acceptable additions.
The Rock - My loathing for all things Michael Bay makes this a mandatory selection.
Bring It On: CE - Dunst and Dushku in cheerleader outfits? I can understand the attraction, but still...
Needed:
Cube - You've got Natali's little seen gem Cypher so owning his debut is a must.
Sex and Lucia - If you enjoy Medem's style, here's another great one by him.
A Tale Of Two Sisters - You seem to have and enjoy quite a bit of Asian cinema, but are a bit low on the horror genre, here's one that fills both niches.
A nicely diverse collection which proves the benefits inherent in going region-free. A bit too heavily concentrated in certain areas, but nothing that can't be fleshed out.

A ton of great discs here to pick from, and probably the list closest to my own tastes.
-Girl on the Bridge
-House of Mirth
-A Little Princess

-Against All Odds (Always seemed kind of dull to me)
-The Whit Stillman flicks (Something abouth this guys movies just irks me)
-Dead Poets Society (Hate this movie with a passion)
needed
-Princess and the Warrior
-Vincent and Theo (Overlooked Altman film with a great performance by Tim Roth)
-My Father's Glory / My Mother's Castle (Sold seperate, but they really go together and both are pretty cheap. Plus you seem to like a lot of French films)

Bugg, thanks for the critique. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy these threads. I'm essentially in agreement with most of what you've stated.
'Against All Odds' is a bit dull in parts, but Rachel Ward is absolutely gorgeous in it, so this validates it for me. As for Stillman, I'd can certainly understand how his style may irk some. He's an acquired taste I'd say. Spot on regarding 'Dead Poets'. It's indeed a cloyingly maudlin piece of crap and something I seriously need to dump.
'Princess and the Warrior' I once owned and sold off. It's basically my least favorite film by Tykwer. Technically it's beautiful, but a bit too serious and heavy handed for it's own good.
'Vincent and Theo' I've been meaning to upgrade from the vhs I have. (Great recommendation)
My Father's Glory/My Mother's Castle I've been intending to see forever and still have yet to get around to. This may finally push me to give them a spin.

Hey MERITOCRACY, thatnks for the recommendations. I rented Cube - it was okay once. I liked Natali's NOTHING the best out of his flicks...Medem is my favorite Spanish director, but I didn't like SEX AND LUCIA for some reason...And I heard good things about A TALE OF TWO SISTERS, but im too scared to own horror movies in my collection - the good ones are so damned scary (The Shining and Jacob's Ladder), I can't even look at the DVD covers without getting shivers...
This is for you now:
3 BEST:
Dark City
Amelie
The Girl on the Bridge - it's got Vanessa! Enough said! hahaha
3 WORST:
The English Patient - gagging....gagging....vomit!! Worst sex scene in history of filmmaking!
Saturday Night Fever - I just crapped myself
Italian for Beginners - worst dogma movie that I have ever seen. And false advertising - there is no Italy in this movie!
3 NEEDED: It seems you have a multi-region dvd player, but don't take advantage of all the non-region 1 dvds. So, Im going to list some non-region 1 must-haves for ya:
THE HOLY MOUNTAIN: you need this crazy obscure masterpiece from the 1970s
THE RED SQUIRREL: if you like Medem, try this bizzare one
DELICATESSAN: Since you have Amelie and City of Lost Children, you gotta get this Jeunut classic too!

Alright toddly6666, I'm taking a shot at you!
Best:
1. Oldboy (Region 3)- I want this so bad. I need a region free player bad.
2. Delicatessen- I love Jeunet and apparently you seem to be fond of him also. It makes me happy when someone seeks this one out. It's so supremely enjoyable.
3. Legend: Ultimate Edition- I love this DVD. This movie doesn't appeal to everyone, but I'm fond of it and you get points for having it.
Worst:
1. The Rock (Criterion Collection)- I really loathe Michael Bay, and I hate that this movie has a Criterion.
2. Van Helsing- I was in shock by how bad this was after I left the theater. I didn't even enjoy it for camp value.
3. Bring It On- Gaff!
Most Needed:
1. Bottle Rocket- You've got Rushmore, you must get this!
2. American Graffiti- My favorite Lucas film, a must for every collection.
3. Hidden Fortress- You don't have many older films, but you've got a lot of asian cinema and this is a Kurosawa favorite. Definitely his most accessible.
Nice collection, man. Really makes me wish I was region-free.

Suspended
mattressman's collection (limiting myself solely to titles I've seen)
The Good:
Citizen Kane
Heat
Saving Private Ryan
The Bad:
Cocoon
Golden Girls S1
Coldplay
The Needed:
Anything I own that you don't own.
OK, seriously -- I'll pick three:
The Godfather
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Abyss
(Actually, it's a very solid collection. I had trouble limiting myself to 3 goods and trouble picking 3 bads. I mean, I personally don't like Coldplay, but if you like Coldplay, more power to you).

Golden Girls belong to the GF. I really don't think it's that terrible of a show. Nonetheless, I can hardly stand watching it. Haha. I thought Cocoon was a pretty enjoyable endeavor, especially for five bucks.
For some reason I keep putting off buying the Godfather collection and buy other stuff first. I love the films, sans part three, but I never light up about the set. So I always put it aside. You're right, though, I need that bad. No collection's right without it. I keep coming so close to buying Once Upon a Time in the West (and it's so cheap!) but for some reason, I always buy other DVDs first. The Abyss I used to own. I traded it and now I kinda miss it. I'll probably end up re-buying it. The exhaustive amount of bonus features alone make it worth owning.
Thanks for the review, JasonF!
