Hi there! I'll play. I could be way off base, but your DVD collection suggests to me that you're a family man -- some prime collectables, a bunch of "bargain bin" pick-ups, some chick-flicks for the significant other, and some stuff for the kids. That could be a whole other thread -- trying to do an analysis of people based on their DVD collection Of course mine may suggest I'm locked up in a padded room somewhere (not true, by the way -- they haven't caught me yet).

Best
Toy Story: Ultimate Box Set (wish I was able to pick it when still in print)
Spartacus: Criterion collection
House of Flying Daggers: R3 (you can watch R3? What are you doing with all those butchered Jackie Chan R1 DVDs then?)

Worst
Well, there's a bit of dodgy stuff here (at least in my opinion). I'd have to go with:
Anacondas: Hunt for the Blood Orchid
The Haunting (I HATED this movie. The original is so much better)
Look Who's Talking Too -- The first one was ok, but this one made me want to

Most Needed
Since you asked for it, I'll throw you more than 3 suggestions:
Aliens -- you have AVP, The Abyss, and the Terminator movies. Why not pick up this great 2-disk set.
Enter the Dragon -- the 2-disk set from WB (with the red cover) is great, with superb extra features.
Laputa: Castle in the Sky -- you have lots of anime, but little Miyazaki. Maybe Princess Mononoke wasn't to your taste (in which case, you probably wouldn't like Spirited Away or Nausicaa), but I found Laputa to be his most entertaining movie.
Metropolis (2002 anime, not the German silent movie) -- Maybe my favorite anime sci-fi: I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer this to Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
Any of the movies by Satoshi Kon: Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers -- He's probably my 2nd favorite anime creator (next to Miyazaki). 3 different genres of anime, but all excellent in their own way. Just keep Perfect Blue away from the kiddies.
Grave of the Fireflies -- I don't think I would rate any anime higher than this one. This is the movie to show to people who think anime is all fighting monsters, robots, and samurai. Truly one of the saddest and most emotionally devastating movies I've ever seen (not just for anime, but all movies). Brilliant, brilliant film and a superb 2-disk special edition.
Lady Snowblood -- you like Kill Bill? See the 30+ year old Japanese movie that "inspired" it.
You seem to like subtle modern ghosts stories (like The Others, Sixth Sense, The Ring, The Grudge). Check out some foreign originals before they get remade! The Eye (2002) and A Tale of Two Sisters (2003, scheduled for R1 release in a couple of weeks. Available now in R3).
Shaolin Soccer -- and Stephen Chow's newest Kung Fu Hustle is out in R3.
Volcano High -- but ONLY IF you can get the original Korean version (not sure of it's availablility in R1), and not the "MTV-cut" which chops a half hour out of the running time, and dubs all the dialog with hip-hop stars. I've heard Dragon Ball Z fans really like this movie, so it should be right up your alley.
Dawn of the Dead (1979, Ultimate Edition): you have the remake, you have Shaun. Get the original.

My list is here. Be gentle! I like some weird things, so I'm sure there's plenty there to dislike. Some guilty pleasures, some bad blind buys, and some "what the hell was I thinking" DVDs. I know there are some obvious ommisions too. I tend to hold off on things that I suspect will be double-dipped to a superior edition, and having had HDTV for 6 months makes me hold off on stuff that gets played on High Definition channels.

i got dibs on brainee...i like a good region free-er...

Best:
1. "Dawn of the Dead: UE" (what every great collection should be humbled by)
2. "Alien Quadrilogy" (simply great movies sans 3, with a s**tload of extras)
3. "The Lion King: Platinum Edition" (it's just one of my favorite movies of all time, let alone animated feature)

Worst:
1. "Ed Wood" (i didn't really like it)
2. "Legend: UE" (they need an Ultimate Edition for this craptastic affair?)
3. "Phantasm" (this was just awful)

Most Needed:
1. "I Drink Your Blood" (i just discovered this opus and you seem to have the same horror tastes...the menus alone are worth the purchase on the regular edition (but if you love it, find a signed edition!))
2. "Army of Darkness R3 Hong Kong" (get the uncut, best video and audio edition)
3. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 3" (you have 1, if you're not getting them all, at least get my favorite season)

very foreign collection, alot i didn't know, but very nice and particular to your tastes.

i'll take it, give me a second scott...

BEST
1. Shaun of the Dead (UK Edition) - seeing as you bought the R2, you were ahead of your time!)
2. They Live - one of Carpenter's best IMO, underrated
3. Ikiru - my favorite film in your collection
WORST
1. Convoy - I watched this once. Once.
2. The Crazies - Romero has managed to make some interesting films but this is just... amateurish
3. The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting... - a daring purchase even for the most ardent completists! to be fair, i've never seen it.
MOST NEEDED
1. They Live - UK R2 has an excellent, entertaining commentary, although the R1 looks better
2. Spaced - television show by the makers of Shaun of the Dead
3. Degrassi: The Next Generation - actually, this is something my girlfriend would recommend.

My Collection

BEST You know your editions ..

Heat (Japanese DTS) Excellent choice. I still wish I could hear that infamous street fight in DTS ..

Kill Bill: vol 1 (Japanese Premium Set) Jealous

Monster's Ball (Signature Series) Underated film behind the exploitation of a goddess.

WORST

Going against the grain with Dark City. Just couldn't get into this one.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Should have skipped right to the third.

Freddy vs. Jason The AVP of horror.

MOST NEEDED

A coupld of Sci Fi for ya that would seem to go along with your tastes: The Omega Man and THX-1138. Dump the American remake of The Ring and go with the original Ringu. Lastly, didn't see really any anime selections .. but give a rental to Blood the Last Vampire sometime. If you enjoy it, pick up the Korean 3 disk set if you can find it.

I've got you covered. Give me a few to scan your collection.

BEST (Going all foriegn here)

In The Mood For Love (This was one of the best love stories I've ever seen.)
Breathless (Just a brilliant film from start to finish)
Red (My favorite of the Three Colors Trilogy)

Worst (Hard to choose. You have a great collection.)

Escape from L.A. (Escape from New York was enough)
Ghostbusters 2 (Thought this was a stupid sequel)
Tremors (No comment)

Need

M*A*S*H (Since you have Altman films, I figured you needed this one too.)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (I'm sure you'll pick this up when it's released. It's going to be a Criterion Collection DVD. Yeah!!)
Tombstone (A great western.)

I'll cover you joefrog91

You like The Cure. I have been meaning to pick up those dvds.

Oh you have My Own Private Idaho in your OWNED section and not your Criterion section.

Best:

-OOP Criterion Hitchcock Set
-Monster Legacy Collection Gift Set
-E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - Ultimate Gift Set
-You also have some great TINS.

Worst:

You have a great collection, so it's hard to pick three:

-Beastie Boys: DVD Anthology (not my type of music at all, but I am sure it is a great dvd)
-AVP (I'm sure there is a GOOD reason you have this so... )
-Old School

Most Needed:

-The Lost Boys 2 disc SE
-MP Life Of Brian Criterion
-Work on getting the rest of the X-Files sets
-Also try some other Kubrick (I see that you have Strangelove)

Best:
Battle Royale - Great movie, would have never known about it if not for the international forum
Straw Dogs - Rape scenes are so unsettling to me that I generally avoid films with them in it or cannot watch them more than one time. The problem is that this movie is just so good that it overshadows my personality conflict with the scene.
Rushmore - Finally got a chance to see this a couple months back, great movie and Bill Murray is awesome

Worst:
About Schmidt - I reiterate, Jack's worst, great for insomnia
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I dunno why, but I cant seem to like Carrey in a serious role, and Charlie Kaufman's films aren't interesting to me at all
Napolean Dynamite - This was so god awful for me I couldn't make it more than 20 or 30 minutes before giving up

Needed:
Bourne Identity - Gotta have the original, the sequel had to much overuse of the handheld cam.
Ju-On - Much better than the american remade Grudge. I felt SMG became Buffy at the end of the remake, totally screwed it for me...
Chinatown - You obviously like Nicholson (Shining, Shooting, Schmidt...), you should have this great film in your library

I like your collection.

Best

- Scarface Deluxe Gift Set: The fact that it included the original 1930's Scarface movie makes it a must buy.
- Lawrence of Arabia Superbit: A classic.
- LOTR EE Trilogy

Worst

You have a good collection so it was hard to find the worst three.
- Anaconda Superbit: I did not enjoy watching this movie.
- Legend of Bagger Vance
- Men in Black 2: Loved the original so I felt ripped off as all of the principals seems to be going through the motion on this sequel.

Needed
- May I suggest some older classics such as Bridge on the River Kwai or Cassablanca.
- I see that you have Drunken Master 2 but how about the original.
- Some more Disney Animated Classics such as Bambi, Snow White and the 7 dwarfs or recent classics such as Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

Hi Guys,

I've never asked anybody to review my DVD collection or ask what they think about it, but I am quite interested. Could you guys have a quick look over?

Some notes: I blind bought the American Pie movies and enjoyed them. I have all the Batman movies because they were in a set for £10 (retailing, in the same store, for £12 each. Go figure). The cartoons are there for nostalgic reasons. I've recently turned 18, but bought most of these when I was 17.

Many thanks!

The idea of this thread is you review someone's collection and then someone else reviews yours. At quick glance I dont see where you have fulfilled your part of the bargain Addy.

On a quick note, whomever reply's, don't forget its LorenzoL's turn as my and Addy's posts have not reviewed him and he seems next in line...

Ok - fair enough

LorenzoL:

Best

- Scarface Deluxe Gift Set: I've never seen this set before, so I'm guessing you can't get it in R2. But it really does look fantastic!! Is it still in print?
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day - The Ultimate Edition: I have the same DVD but in R2, so without the cool looking slipcover. One of my favourite DVD's for one of my favourite movies.
- Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The: Fantastic set, fantastic movie. The best description I have ever heard of this movie is; "Every possible freeze frame looks like an oil painting". So true.

Worst

- Men in Black - Limited Edition: I'm not a fan of Will Smith and didn't really enjoy this film. Not as bad as the sequel though.

I can't really see anything else I could class as 'worst'. Alot of stuff I've never felt the need to watch and alot of unknown stuff, but it would be wrong to class that as 'worst'.

Needed

- You have Terminator 2 but no first Terminator movie?
- I noticed Evil Dead 2 and a few others, but can I suggest more horrors?
- You have a few classic westerns, but overall, you're lacking in the genre. I'd recommend a A Fistful of Dollars, The Outlaw Josey Wales and High Plains Drifter to get you started.

Best 3 (From a LOT of good titles):

- Good, Bad, Ugly - Italian extended edition
- Hellraiser - R2 CE
- The Office series (oh how I love that show)

Worst 3 (very, very few bad titles, hard to pick three out):

- 51st State (Formula 51) - I really didn't like this movie
- Ghost Ship
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Most Needed:

- Election - Great movie by Alexander Payne, would fit in your collection well
- Some David Lynch (Mullholland Dr. and Blue Velvet)
- WB Gangster's Collection (Great set, seems something you'd be interested in)
- Heat : SE

I'll move My Own Private Idaho today, thanks. Yes, I have AVP to complete both movies' sets. No other reason. I agree with all of the Most Needed picks. I've just been putting off buying these. I will have them sooner or later.

Before Sunrise I will eventually add to my dvd collection (I still have the LD though), But I actually owned Chasing Amy and Leon, but later got rid of them because I did not care for those films. In fact, outside of Nikita, I consider Besson to be France's Michael Bay

Aliend15:

- Dr. Strangelove: 40th Anniv. Edition
- THX-1138: Director's Cut
- Sopranos season sets

- Clerks: Uncensored (not a Kevin Smith fan, myself, and this was just awful IMO)
- Goodfellas (Ack! Dump that old flipper edition and get the 2-disc!)
- Hoosiers (I actually have nothing against this movie, but it always brings up memories of a horrible high school teacher... )

Need:

- Night of the Living Dead: Millennium Ed./Dawn of the Dead (1978)
- 2001: A Space Odyessy
- The Spanish Prisoner (seems like you'd enjoy David Mamet's twisty thriller)

Most Needed
Band of Brothers
Schindler's List
Star Wars Trilogy [You have 1 and 2?]

**Extra** I see you have Dragonheart 2 but you must get the first one in DTS, it's amazing! Also, I see a lot of older B movies - perhaps you would also like them with the Mystery Science Theater treatment?
I do have the Star Wars Trilogy and Schindlers list just haven't added them to my collection yet.

I will pass on MST3000 since I never really got into the show when it was on.

Saw Band of Brothers on HBO and it is still playing on History channel all the time. Not sure if I want to pay the price for it when I am not sure I would sit through them all again same as why I don't have the Sopranos.

Well you have a lot of great titles in your collection. Kudos to all of the Criterion DVDs you have as well as your diversity with classic Hitchcock films to independent films. I bet you get almost every special edition available.

But a decision has got to me made.....

Best:

Lord of the Rings Triology - still the best all around put together DVDs
Matrix Collection - Way to much information, but great films, great bonus discs
Indiana Jones Trilogy - I just love these movies

Worst:

Rules of Attraction - just could not get into it.
Pi - what a mind trip and what the hell was going on?
3000 Miles to Graceland - who greenlit this project?

Needs:

Any Bond film
Armageddon - why not add this to your Criterion Collection
24 or Alias TV sets - good TV box sets, thought you'd might enjoy
