Bugg,

First things first ... first rate collection.

Best

Just some choices, with so many DVDs to choose from it is quite arbitrary ...

Midnight Cowboy
Orphic Trillogy (anyone that likes Cocteau can't be all bad )
Cinema Paradiso

Worst

(I mean I have to pick on something and picking on Midnight movies is too easy so)

Batman - The Movie (1966)
Broadcast News
Cleopatra (the film that almost ended 20th Century Fox)

Needs

1. Sunset Blvd.
2. As you have The Thin Red Line, I'd suggest Band of Brothers
3. Something from Tati ... Playtime (Criterion release probably this Fall or Mon Oncle or if Tati is not your thing perhaps Antonioni (Blowup or L'Avventura or L'Eclisse) or if Antonioni is not your thing than Kurosawa (Ikiru) or if tired of him Jean Renoir (Rules of the Game or Grand Illusion).

ctyankee,

I had a hard time making these choices sinceI really thought you had a first rate collection. Nice stuff especially the Criterion Collection.
Best - I'll avoid some of the more obvious ones and I'll stick to stuff that really caught my eye

Brazil Criterion Collection - A movie I keep putting off picking up even though it is always at the top of my wish list
Seven Samurai CC - Same as above
Warner Gangster Collection - Definitely a set I would like to pick up for myself

Worst - mostly films I don't like
Jerry Maguire - did not enjoy it.
Riverdance Live from New York City - as if this needed any explanation
The Wedding Planner - formulaic snoozefest

Need
Metropolis - to round out your anime
The Killer - for some more HK action
Toy Story 1 and 2 - to add some more life into your animated collection

Best:
Seven Samurai
Umberto D.
Seventh Seal

Worst:
Glitter
Gigli
You Got Served

Most Needed: (currently)
Dodesukaden - brilliant Kurosawa
Innocents - Jack Clayton's eerie horror film from 1961 based on The Turn of the Screw
Hoop Dreams - one of the best documentaries ever.

i'll do cruz too, since smurf doesn't seem to have a link...

Best:
1. "The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection" (you bought what i couldn't, though i have the encylopedia which is worth the entire admission price)
2. "The John Woo 2-pk (Killer and Hard Boiled)" (great flicks by any company)
3. "Die Hard: Ultimate Collection" (favorite movie, but i had such a good time going through each and every extra on this laden opus)

Worst:
1. "Muppet Christmas Carol" (i dunno, i guess you like the muppets a whole lot, but i couldn't see spending hard earned dollars)
2. "Cat and Dogs WS & FS" (isn't none too many?)
3. "The 6th Day" (maybe a 7th would have made it a better movie)

Most Needed:
1. "Rocky I" (2 & 3, but not the Oscar winner?)
2. "Army of Darkness" (i looked, but i don't think you've completed the trilogy and this isn't bad to complete it with)
3. -tie-"Mean Streets or Raging Bull" (lack of Scorcese is a no no and the first title is such an early classic!)

ok, someone who hasn't done me, feel free...

Was looking at your On order and it says you have Batman as "On Order". I believe that a SE is in the works and is coming out sometime down the road. And if there isn't, the regular dvd is horrible! The transfer is about the same as my OLD OLD OLD VHS tape.

Best:
Beauty and the Beast - Platinum Edition (the best Disney movie, IMO)
Seven: PE
Traffic: Criterion

Worst:
Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle
Survivor - Season Two - The Australian Outback: The Greatest
Star Wars I/II

Most Needed:
Work on getting the rest of those tv season sets and such (Kill Bill Vol. 2 etc.)
Bambi - you have a lot of other Disney discs
RUSHMORE!

Conscience,

Very nice collection. I like your taste in movies with a few exceptions.

BEST
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I'm missing this movie in my collection)
- The Incredibles
- Casablanca

WORST
- American Psycho
- The Grudge
- Showgirls (even you had it marked as a bad movie)

NEEDED
- Since you liked Almodovar's "Talk to Her", I'll suggest that you rent "All about my Mother" or his earlier movies such as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". You won't be dissapointed.
- Other Pixar's movies such as Toy Story (if you can find it), Finding Nemo, Bug's Life and Monster Inc.
- More Kurosawa like "Seven Samurai" and "Rashomon".

Thanks. Agree totally. I told my wife that her DVDs are killing me as you're the second person that's highlighted Riverdance ... I may have to "lose" that disc.

I have Metropolis so thanks for pointing out that it was missing from my database (along with Leon: the Professional). I'd like to pick up Lang's Metropolis.

Thanks for the Toy Story and The Killer suggestions. I wish that I had picked up the Ultimate Toy Box or the two pack ... but didn't and I've only heard good things about The Killers.

A lot of good stuff here. It was hard to decide what direction to take.

Best:

Gattaca (great underrated sci-fi flick)
Night of the Hunter (I love this movie! Amazing cinamatography)
Casablanca (I almost said To Kill a Mockingbird instead)

Worst:

Matrix Reloaded (so deadly I haven't been able to watch Revolutions, and a lot of it was shot near where I live)
Saving Private Ryan (teh battle scenes were brilliant; the movie was pure schmaltz)
Showgirls

Need:

Insomnia, US version (if you liked Memento you might like Nolan's remake of this flick, esp. his commentary)
Spartacus CC (you like classics and you have Gladiator)
Das Boot Uncut (the five+ hour, german miniseries version)

B

Amelie (Brilliant film and DVD .. and for so cheap!)
Contact (Underated, period .. even with some of it's "cheesy" effects. One of the better mastered DVDs for it's time as well)
Run Lola Run (Great implementation of a different type of plot line. Need to be region free to get the best mastered DVD)

HM

anything Pixar (Finding Nemo and Incredibles are truly beautifully scripted and delivered films)

Great collection, quality over quantity .. tough to select 3 bad ones .. or best for that matter!

W

Bowling for Columbine (exploitation at its worst or most prosperous depending on your view)
Romeo Must Die (must have been a freebie)
Speed (you must be into Keanu ...)

N

Musa: The Warrior
Insomnia (Criterion Swedish original release)
Unbreakable (love it or hate it, Shyamalan delivers another signature twist ending with an interesting take on extremes.)

I'm going out on a limb and throwing in a couple of random titles for you to check out .. All About Lily Chou Chou just for kicks. The new region 1 Hive release transfer isn't the greatest, but neither are any other region releases. It's still worth it. Based on your tastes, I think you might dig Lily. Also, one last more obscure film: Picnic at Hanging Rock: Criterion.

kitkat - thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely be adding Insomnia. I saw it several years ago and recall it as being quite good. I agree 100% regarding both Night of the Hunter and that Matrix-whatever .
