arent these the exact same discs that were supposed to be released last year but pulled until they got the rights to one of the extras? so if it is indeed a flaw in the DVD, shouldnt they have noticed this long long ago?

One guy said, yah, I have one in my hand, but I can't sell it to you. I think it's because some mean lady was there telling him what to do. This was on Diversey and Halsted, if any of you want to have a go at it. I did pick one up though, on the south side, and someone I think called ahead to put one on hold. When I asked if they had more, the lady said, what's your name...I told her and she said, no we don't have more.
Well, good luck, and lets hope they do still sell them next week.
oh, price is 29.99
Neitzl, are you referring to the Coconuts at 5151 S. Pulaski Rd.? If so, the person who called ahead was none other than... me! I actually asked to reserve two even though they had three. I picked it up last night and spent the night away going through the dvd. (I had no problems with the disc). The second dvd was supposed to go to my brother, but its now up for auction. (Let's hope its released Tuesday!)

I haven't gotten a shipping confirmation from returnwarehouse yet; it's still stuck in "Packaging." totalcampus.com hasn't even confirmed the order yet, and dvdlegacy hasn't charged my credit card yet.

Fingers very much crossed...

The seller has no control over the status displayed on the site after the sale is confirmed. It automatically says packaging for a set amount of time then switches to shipped, regardless of when the seller actually ships the item.

I thought that that extra was a short thing about transvestism that is not going to be on on this disc because they didn't have the rights in R1 (and couldn't get them). But, I admit, I might be wrong.

so if it is indeed a flaw in the DVD, shouldnt they have noticed this long long ago?
Yes, the whole thing sounds like sour grapes to me; as far as I can tell, the only person/people saying there is/will be a flaw are people who don't have the disc.

Mao's information has been very reliable in the past, and I would trust what he has to say, rather than accusing him of having "sour grapes."

In my experience, disc defects are usually a "YMMV" situation. What will happen is the disc works fine on some players, but not on others. So even if this disc is defective, there's a chance that it could work on your player.

A 'defective' disc would only be a pain in the ass for people paying $150 for a sealed copy on eBay. For people that find it on a store shelf, you can always just return the thing if it doesn't work or has problems.

DVD Legacy thoughts:

It seems that some orders were cancelled on Monday. Could it be that DVD Legacy didn't think they'd be getting the discs in, but then did, and so went ahead and sold them on half/ebay/their website? Why else would they cancel some orders on Monday, and then auction a bunch of them off on eBay the next day?

Ed Wood is still listed on their website as a presale, so one would think they'd take it down pretty fast if they didn't think they'd be able to sell the DVD's.

Mao's information has been very reliable in the past, and I would trust what he has to say, rather than accusing him of having "sour grapes."
All I'm saying is, you've got a bunch of people besides Mao saying "Oh, it's probably just an error or something", clearly sour grapes ... just read any of those posts. If Mao's info is usually good, that's fine, but he was actually asking for confirmation, not stating it as an out and out fact. Add to that the fact that nobody who has received it has had a problem, and I say, again, that the people saying it does/will have a problem are, thus far, exclusively people who don't have to the disc.

In my experience, disc defects are usually a "YMMV" situation. What will happen is the disc works fine on some players, but not on others. So even if this disc is defective, there's a chance that it could work on your player.
Yeah, that's exactly why the idea of a company doing a major recall just before for release for a disc defect that is confirmed as not affecting every single player doesn't ring true to me (which isn't to say mao would be lying, just, at most, misinformed); maybe it's me being cynical, but it's never seemed to me like the studios care that much about issues that affect specific individual player brands but not all of them. Sure, they'll try to fix them (at least, eventually), but they won't let it interfere with their selling the product which may not work on every player, but will work on most, or even just some. (I assume this is because if they sell 100 units, even if 30 have a problem, not everybody will return them, and they can keep the replacement costs as cheap as possible.)

But you're totally right, I shouldn't have cried "Sour grapes", it could just as easily be somebody (again, not directed specifically toward Mao) deliberately giving out false information in order to slow down the marketplace; if the word gets around that the disc is defective when it actually isn't, somebody who knows that it isn't could buy a bunch while other people are still wondering whether it is or not and then turn around and sell them for huge profits when the rumor was confirmed as untrue. (Still, "sour grapes" is just an easier thing to chalk it up to.)

Off-hand, could it be that the person who cancelled the orders on Monday knew about the recall, but the person putting the auctions up on Tuesday wasn't informed? (Or, as a variation on this, somebody had entered the title into a program on the computer to automatically list the auctions, and had forgotten to remove it?)

Just a thought. I don't know the actual answer.

Maybe somebody can start a list of retailers in certain cities that have them in stock? Assuming the people who find them don't buy them all to make money on ebay.

Maybe...

I was thinking...isn't it possible those half or ebay sellers were trying to get rid of the movies before having to ship them back? If they sell em and then ship them, they make money they wouldn;t make if they shipped it back. This confirms possibly why they weren't jacking the price, but instead using the quick buy it now auctions, to get rid of them and make a little profit instead of having to just send them back. Makes some sense, right?

Bill, I'd love to get that website. I'm tired of just staring at my Ed Wood movie poster willing it to be the DVD!

Thanks!

I called the Tower Records in Chicago. As expected, they said the dvd has been recalled. He told me that according to the system the NEW RELEASE DATE WOULD BE SOMETIME IN DECEMEBER! So, make you want of it... thats what I heard.

To those in Jersey wondering about which store and mall it's Sam Goody in Woodbridge Mall and out in th open.

I figured my location would give away the mall and you all could just search. I wanted to put you on the same adventure that my brother went through, guess you wanted none of that.

I did watch the movie, thought it was excellent. The transfer was also excellent. I checked a few extras, and am happy to report I've experienced no flaws.

achau9598,

I was wondering something.. Is this an actual email from the seller or is it something that Half.com does automatically? I am just wondering because I ordered yesterday as well and have heard nothing from the seller. Keeping my fingers crossed that I receive this. . .

Yes, but they would still be breaking street date, and could be held accountable for that.

At first, I had used the "contact seller" button on half.com. I said I was having problems with my email, and wasn't sure if a confirmation was sent.

He emailed me back today saying that it was confirmed yesterday.

This morning I also recieved the half.com notice that it was, indeed, confirmed.

If they sell em and then ship them, they make money they wouldn;t make if they shipped it back.
But they could be fined for breaking the street date on the DVD, and i believe the fine is $1000 per disc (not that it's always enforced, just that the fine is high enough to make it *not* profitable to do this).

This confirms possibly why they weren't jacking the price, but instead using the quick buy it now auctions, to get rid of them and make a little profit instead of having to just send them back.
This would only really make sense if the company were planning to send goons around to go to the guy's house and take the discs back if he didn't send them back; which is to say, the company isn't going to force him to send them back next week if he doesn't send them back this week, if he's genuinely planning to sell them to make money easily, he wouldn't do 'buy it now'.

Unless the worry is that E-bay is going to cancel the sales.
Has anyone tried Borders? Aren't they notorious for having recalled titles on their shelves?
I tried a Borders in NYC, they didn't have it (though they had a lot of other OOP stuff). Is Borders notorious for breaking street dates as well? Because I didn't notice anything on the shelf early, as this would be.

I'm curious if these are the exact same DVDs that were recalled last year. Anyone know what the copyright on the back of the case states? I would think by now a DVD from last year has been thoroughly tested by quality control. However, if it's newer ("copyright 2004"), it seems more likely a defect could slip by undetected.

But if it's being recalled due to some lame marketing strategy, I might have to change my original opinion on Universal being the worst for DVD releases.

Wouldn't there be some penalty for NOT returning items that were recalled?
