Or a little longer if you're a Chiefs fan. ;)

I'm going to start with that 'waiting room' with my rescued bots in Astro's Playroom. Dying to see if they go through the portal.

I never buy games on release date lately except for College Football 25, but I bought this to support the game. The Costco price was too tempting.

Okay, I'm already in love!
Here's the portal in Astro's Playroom after the clock expired:

And here's what it's like when you rescue your first familiar Bot :

You keep them in your controller! How cute is that?

Anyway I stayed up too late playing a few levels. It's just wonderful.

And when you finish a level, you can replay it on your own, or for 200 coins you can "hire" a little hint bird that follows you and has It's radar activated when you get close to an undiscovered secret!

It'll be weird playing this without VR, but it looks like a lot of fun

Ha, I just bought both this and College Football from costco because of sales (tempted by Madden too). I'm blaming you.

BTW : The haptic feedback in the controller here is mind-blowing. So many little tricks are just so immersive. The springy triggers when you get boxing gloves, the rumble of the controller jet engines combined with the airplane roar coming from the speakers, the little rattling around sensation when you've gathered a bunch of bots and toss them around the controller cage their housed it. It's all so fun and joyful. The Dual Sense controller really feels ten years ahead of whatever Xbox calls their current model. It'll feel even more immersive when the Asto Bot controller arrives, as it will match the in-game controller perfectly (at least for those of us who don't stick rubber grips on it).

Me too… but that Costco deal is too sweet. Mine arrives Thursday.

Great prices on Madden and College Football at Costco $49.99 right now. Costco apparently sells new release games for $7 off. The have the new Star Wars game cheaper than anywhere else.

hey, I resemble that remark and grips do nothing to dull the haptic feedback at all.

I mean the look of the physical controller will 100% match the appearance of the controller in-game, which you see and interact with all the time.

while all of this is undoubtedly true, it just exacerbates the fact that most games have such weak utilization of these effects, if any at all. I recall playing Control and getting not the least bit excited about the haptics; rather it was a nuisance for me. Same for Hogwart’s. Hated the haptics in that while playing under my kid’s account.

I guess this is a hot take since others seem to like it, but to me, only the Astro Bot games (this new one and Playroom) are this inventive with it. It’s a shame that 4+ years in, it takes another Astro Bot to remind us of that. Every* other game so far, I’d rather just have that shit turned off.

*(I haven’t played Returnal, yet, but I hear it’s also up there, for what it’s worth)

I'd argue that the Spider-Man games, God of War Ragnarok and Horizon all use the Dual Sense in creative and effective ways.

Re: Astro Bot (9/6/2024: PlayStation 5)

Yeah I'd think it would be shoved down the priority list for multiplatform games but PS5 exclusives can use the time (and maybe even have a mandate) to put in PS5 controller specific effects.

Re: Astro Bot (9/6/2024: PlayStation 5)

I don’t recall anything noteworthy when playing Horizon2 or Spider-Man: Miles Morales, though I dipped out of Horizon2 when Elden Ring came out and have yet to go back. I know… priorities.

Haven’t played SM2 or GOW:R though.
I played SM1 on PS4Pro.

edit: my Astro Bot is now arriving within the next 30 to 270 minutes!

edit: now says 2:15pm to 6:15pm. Lame!!

Also, Immortals of Aveum uses the controller very well. each different color magic you use, the controller changes to that color as well. it's very cool.

First level is great. This feels just like the greatest 3D platformers, so far. The opening sequence feels right out of the late 90s / early 00s of games in the best possible way.

I don’t love the first new power (vacuum to make yourself float) but it’s fine. Still, the game is delightful.

Re: Astro Bot (9/6/2024: PlayStation 5)

Two early thoughts besides the obvious that it is an amazing game: I would love this team to make an Ape Escape game (it's been forever since we got one and the old ones due to controls and camera controls are hard to go back to), and I love the character model they did for Spyro (please make a new one).

Re: Astro Bot (9/6/2024: PlayStation 5)

I also love that they use the beloved PS characters to inspire the look of levels (like the jungle-themed level you find Crash). Clever, cool looking stuff.

I have blue, thin grips that will only cover up the already blue handle and I think will be a perfect fit. However, I will try without for a couple sessions and we’ll see how that goes.

I 100% the first two areas so I think I'm going to take a break and play Star Wars Outlaws in between days so I don't blow right through this.
