I’m playing Astro’s Playroom, are there no saves? I played a bit, quit to main menu and when I went back in I was at the beginning. So that stinks, but is there a way or you just have to play in one shot? I’ll tell you though, the haptic feedback with this game is insane.

That wasn't my experience. There were saves.

was it auto or manual? bc i didn't see either option or the games usually begin by saying this game autosave, do not turn off.... but this one didn't say that, nor can I manually save.

It saves automatically. It’s a very short little game.

Maybe I’ll delete and then re-download.

You don't need to delete and re-download. It's saving your progress after every level. Everytime you start the game it starts you at the main hub room and then you go to levels from there.

ahh. That’s the ticket. Thanks Quest.

Re: Astro Bot (9/6/2024: PlayStation 5)

Finished the game and got all the collectibles, bots, and trophies. (Edit: took me 22 hours, for what it’s worth)

The boss fights were all very inventive in their progression, but also quite easy overall. I think that’s my biggest issue with the game; I can respect that it’s on the easier side and there’s nothing wrong with that, but only the bonus levels offer any real challenge, and there’s just not enough of those. I’d love to see an expansion that offers up a bunch more. For me, the best platform games ramp up the difficulty either through the main game or in the extras, but in this game, the last few levels are only marginally more difficult than in the first section.

That said, I can see folks giving up on the very last bonus level, which will stop them from getting the Platinum. It’s easily the hardest level in the game.

The final levels in each section are a total blast though. I love that you get to take on the gameplay of those games, and there’s some nice surprises there.

Another minor complaint is that some of the most fun powers in earlier stages never get reused. That’s so disappointing because the powers that do get reused the most are also fairly basic. I’m also surprised there are no built in speedrun modes. I guess that’s coming later, maybe.

I had so much fun playing this all weekend, but I also feel like there's little reason to return to it. For a platforming game, I think that’s a bit of a let-down, but others may be completely fine with it.

I give Astro Bot 8.5 rescued bots out of ten, and I’ll throw in a little can of WD40 to get rid of some of those squeaky bits.

I gave up on the final bonus level. I didn't want to spend the probably few hours it would take me to get through it. A couple of the other void levels were bad enough (one of the triangle ones took me forever). 13 hours to get all the bots. I don't think I'll grind coins to get the rest of the gacha items. I'm not concerned with achievements.

I am really enjoying the game. The challenge is just right for me -- those triangle levels are too difficult for me for the most part, the others are fun. The Slo MO Casino level I thought was brilliant, such a creative twist on 3D platforming. Felt so clever and original.

The triangle level that starts you with the rubber duck spewing water to get over the lava can go straight to hell.

My physical copy just arrived from Costco. It came a lot quicker than my College Football 25 order from Costco.

that one was fine. :) I want a couple dozen more like it.

I don't know what it was about that level specifically, but it was probably the hardest for me to get through. I kept failing just trying to get past the lava and dodging the projectiles from the lizard right after.

Fuck that. If I wanted to play Super Meat Boy, I would have played Super Meat Boy. ;)

In all honesty, I like the regular difficulty level. Mostly easy, but some mild challenges. Enough to make you think and try things a few times, but not so tough that you want to throw the controller. That's Mario, that's Zelda, that's most of the classic Sony platformers, that is this one too. I love it.

The octopus boss is weirdly adorable.

Besides the bonus levels, how hard is the game overall? Is it similar to Astro's Playroom? My 5 yo absolutely LOVES Playroom and can get by for the most part. But does get frustrated on some of the parts. Just wondering if the full game ramps up the difficulty a lot. Talking about the main story not additional challenges.

Not too difficult at all, but and I'd say just a small step up from Playroom.
Though part of me thinks a 5 yo may struggle with using some of the powers you get on some levels, it should be mostly fine. The most difficult part, not including the bonus levels, may be a couple of the bosses that gave some folks a bit of trouble.

Agree with Dan. IMO there are some levels that someone that young will struggle with. Even if you're just doing enough to get through the story. But there's plenty there for them to enjoy if you step in and help out with those parts.

And this is important: there is NO penalty for dying. There are TONS of checkpoints-- like six per small level. There are no lives to lose, no coins or progress lost, you just restart at the most recent checkpoints. Over and over again, if necessary. That is something I like. I think it works better than even Mario games.

I know I choose which games to play, but it was super refreshing playing a game where I could just die and not care. Hell, sometimes it was quicker to jump off and restart at a checkpoint rather than going back.

Just got the platinum and the 305 bots rescued. Says it took 14 hours. That final bonus level seemed like it was going to be harder than it actually is but only took me 20 or so tries. It's only like 2 minutes long which helps.

Thanks for all the input. Seems like she will enjoy it just fine. She's playing through Princess Peach right now so I'll probably wait until there's a sale on it. Looks really awesome though. I was really surprised by how good Playroom was.

The Mario games are incredibly challenging. Which I appreciate but it would be nice if they balanced it a bit or had an option to make one player easier. Like the auto-steer and gas are an incredible addition to Mario Kart for families with young kids. Mario Wonder is a bit better with certain characters who don't die if they get hit but it's still difficult to play all together with different skill levels.
