Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

What are these “limited run” physical games on Switch (Amazon) and why are they so much?

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is like $88. And, another cartridge was over $90. Both of those I saw can be had for much cheaper digitally on the eShop. So why are these physical media cartridges so expensive?

They're for collectors, and are Limited Runs, just like the box says. Don't buy them -- just buy a digital copy instead (or even better, don't buy them at all.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

People collect these specific games? Why? I already had Chainsaw on PS5 so I wouldn’t dream of getting on a lower powered console, but I just looked up Switch games on Amazon and there were carts for way high prices. Just curious is all.

Limited Run Games (and other limprint publishers) used to do a set run of a game that would otherwise have been digital-only, and fans, collectors, resellers, etc. would queue up for the ordering frenzy once preorders went live to get in before they sold out. The more common practice now is to have a month-long window or so where folks can order a physical copy of a game, and if you miss out, you’re generally SOL. You’re often stuck with resellers who charge through the nose.

It’s a messier situation now since sometimes these games do get wide releases. This is why you’ll sometimes see people ask if a game is a “numbered release” in limprint discussions. (And heck, LRG did a limited edition of Sonic x Shadows Generations, and that game’s everywhere!)

Limited Run has their own store on Amazon, and the prices aren’t outrageous there (for the not-collector editions, anyway), but resellers unaffiliated with LRG can still charge an arm and a leg for these titles on Amazon.

Video Games Plus carries a lot of Limited Run games after the preorder window has closed, sometimes they’re available from LRG directly afterwards as well (I think more as dedicated events than just being available everyday), and, of course, there’s LRG’s Amazon store. You might also be able to import a copy from Hong Kong (often English-friendly) from a site like Play Asia.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Seems absurd. Even hard to get over my 4K/Bluray physical addiction, but frankly digital is so quick and easy. They’re not even custom art packaging. Give me digital games or give me death, except when physical much much less.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

You're on a forum full of people that have collected physical media for the last 20+ years and think it's absurd someone would want a limited edition copy of a game?

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

So, the Switch 2 has basically been fully revealed by accessory manufacturers at this point. And word is the release is April. Why is Nintendo still silent? If they had plans for some surprise reveal, it's too late now.

Maybe they're still finalizing pricing? In any case all this buzz is only good for them, I'm sure interest in the official announcement will still be sky high (and preorders will sell out unless the price is just astronomical)

I guess I don't get the timing (assuming April is accurate). Why wait until so close to release to reveal that it exists? They haven't even acknowledged that it's a real product, as far as I know.

Nintendo has said that the successor to the Switch will be revealed before the end of March, and they confirmed compatibility with existing Switch software and with Nintendo Switch Online (which will continue on). That's it.

If it uses the same carts and storage then bring it on!

I mean there's marketing, ads, trailers, point of displays at stores, website portals... you don't just jump your timetable because some people leaked some shit.

I'm guessing pricing will come later given the future admin threatening tradewars and tariffs. It's probably a safer to take a wait and see approach.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

do joy cons have to hook up to the actual console to use them or can you buy another pair of joy cons (not linked to console) and use them in a light gun? thanks in advance.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Are you asking if Joy-Cons have to be physically attached to the console to be used? They do not. (Because the Switch can be played docked or as a handheld, the Joy-Cons have to be usable in both scenarios.)

You will have to pair any new Joy-Cons with the Switch to be able to use them in a peripheral like a light gun, though.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

The rumor mill is abuzz that the Switch successor will be revealed on Thursday. Admittedly, the rumor mill has been abuzz about various dates for a couple of years now, but still...! This may be the one. The further word is that we'll see somewhere between nothing and almost nothing about any new games; maybe some on-screen glimpses, but the emphasis will be on the device itself. Games will be showcased in a separate event, with a release coming somewhere around May or June. So release date aside, it sounds a lot like the Switch reveal.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

thanks Adam. how do you pair the joy cons? and once you pair them does that mean I would have to pair my main ones every time? like if I have joy cons attach to console, can I use another set of joy cons in a light gun peripheral once those are paired?

Nintendo has a guide at https://en-americas-support.nintendo...on-controllers

No. It's similar to how other consoles' wireless controllers work. Once it's paired, the controllers are tied to that system. The system is not tied to those controllers. You can freely use Joy-Cons interchangeably.

What game do you want to play that utilizes a "light gun?"

House of the Dead, Sniper Elite 4, Big Game Hunter. but, especially HotD. i remember playing it with light gun back in the day and it was so joyful. hard as hell, but great experience. no idea what console i played it on, but i was gleeful. i know this will be much different, but i hope it has something to offer.

Apparently it has performance and control issues.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Eh. Even if I get a minute of enjoyment I’ll be satisfied. Sounds like a tweak in the controls might do something. I’m only out like $30 or less for the gun. And, I can try it tomorrow with my original joy cons rather than wait till Wed for the others.
