Nintendo has still released a fair number of Switch exclusives. It’s hard to blame them for re-releasing Wii U titles that were perfectly good games, but largely unplayed due to the lack of success of the system they were initially released on.

Picked up Dicey Dungeons today. It was on sale and on my wish list.

I played it at PAX South 2019 and really liked it. Great dice strategy game.

But I can, and will blame them for charging a full $60 for said port of a 5 year old game that they hardly even touched up.

I can see that, but we all know Nintendo is protective of their characters and that they don’t want to undervalue games featuring them. It’s what it is and I don’t see it ever changing aside from random sales here and there.

Something that may have lessened the sting of these re-releases for WIi-U owners is if Nintendo could've transferred over the digital copies from Wii-U to the Switch.

Yeah, I can see that. At least give Wii U owners a credit or something when they buy the Switch version of a Wii U owned game.

I know they wouldn’t do it, but for Wii U owners who were supporting the system when it was clearly a failure would have shown some goodwill is all. Obviously they had no obligation to do so though.

Why do that when people will buy it twice?

I mean they still make you buy the backward compatible games separately for pretty much every console. And to my knowledge, before this current PS5/series X generation (and even that is up in the air), every single remaster or remake was a separate purchase with no option to get it cheaper if you bought the previous version.

The real problem is that their games rarely have discounts. If Mario Kart or Pikmin or whatever regularly went down to 20 bucks like most other first party games from other companies, would people care? I'd say just resist buying them again if it bugs you so much, though.

And yes, Dicey Dungeons is amazing.

I agree it would have been nice but again I think the absolutely failure of the Wii U was a kind of Trojan horse benefit for Nintendo because there was hardly any push back for them being able to release virtually untouched ports of Wii U games on the Switch as brand new since there were so few people who bought them in the first place. I really doubt it if the majority of Switch owners even realize how many of the games released are ports of Wii U games.

TBH it's our own fault as consumers. Nintendo released MK8 deluxe but added all the downloadable content and so they could get a Mario Kart game on the switch quickly. They they Released Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which they put extensive work into to add new characters and levels and such. These were highly successful so they released Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker as straight ports. No push back and sales were good so they followed that up with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3. Now they're finally putting some work into releasing Super Mario 3D: World with new content. I don't begrudge them for wanting to recoup some of the losses from the Wii U and these games were really excellent games, arguably the top of their franchises, but it still stinks they're charging $60 for games that are almost 10 years old. They obviously don't need to, but it would have been nice if they had released them under their budget player selects line or something like that.

The first straight-up Nintendo Direct in nearly a year and a half...!

Trying to temper my expectations but I'm excited to see what they show.

I believe this year is the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, here's hoping for a nice compilation release for the Switch of as many 2.5D games as they fit on a cartridge. I'd love to have all the old Gameboy and DS games together.

And the Gameboy Advance! I’d love to play The Minish Cap again. Such a fun little game.

It's seemed like the Switch has done better with odd-numbered years (2017! 2019!), which...okay, not much of a data sample, but I'm hopeful for 2021 anyway.

Hmm....I'm wondering if there will be some pretty big announcements. Aren't they usually earlier in the day?

What I'd like to see; a new Waverace, F-Zero & Pikmin. Or maybe that Metroid that was teased years(?) ago.

But since we already discussed Nintendo giving it's devlopers this generation off, this is what we'll get:

I saw Mario Kart 9 trending on twitter this morning. If they announce that, I am going to shout from the rooftops with excitement. Since we never got a true Mario Kart game for the Switch (I don't count the rehash of Mario Kart 8) it's long overdue.

That Mario Golf game looks like it’ll be fun. And my kids loved seeing the Animal Crossing update coming where they’ll be bringing in Mario stuff.
