re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong
I know y'all are busy playing Peggle 2, because it's amazing, but here's some info on the next software update for PS4:
USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know in the ‘What’s New’ section, recommending gamers your friends frequently play with.
Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Back Up Data: Data on PS4 can be backed up and resorted using USB storage. This will back up all data for the console, including settings, save data, screenshots, video clips, download data, and more.

I guess they broke PSN posting that announcement since it went up almost exactly when the network went down. Kinda frustrating to have this outage so soon after Monday's scheduled maintenance. Been down for close to 2 hours...

"This is not Sony circa 2007"...is probably something I said at some point.
Seriously Sony. You made a really nice console and have built a lot of good will. Fix your shit.
to Dan's list.

I want that 2.0 update more for the Share feature than anything else. Hope it comes out soon.

any idea on a date for the 2.00 update.

We have not yet announced a date. That said we don’t want you guys playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update of the year.
So to me that means by the end of the month with CoD AW in the first week of November and GTA V the second.

The only thing I really care about in that update is something they could have done a long time ago, and that's the add to library feature. But it just kinda shows that I jumped into this gen a little too early.
The main thing keeping this from completely replacing my PS3 is the lack of remote (well, that and lack of 3D Blu support). At this point, I'd even take a Sony-specific remote, though I really just want them to work with Harmony since I have a blue tooth Harmony remote that controls the PS3 really well.

Was hoping the update would finally include DLNA media server support as promised. Oh well, maybe next time.

There are still more features in 2.0 yet to be announced, but apparently DLNA media server support is not among them.

They need to have regularly scheduled maintenance that falls at the same time once a month. Pick a time that averages the least amount of users, implement your upgrades at that time and then leave the network alone until the next scheduled maintenance period. The only exception would be when there is something that requires immediate attention.

You wanted people to sign up to PSN+ and people have but what boggles my mind is that they didn't have the foresight to make sure that their servers could handle the added users? How stupid can you be business wise and why destroy the good will that you're creating with your gaming system with such a blunder?

Amongst all the talk about Sony fixing their shit, they apparently cleaned up in the September NPDs.
- "Nearly tripled August sales", which would put them in the 550K-570K range.
- Second highest September for any console ever (edged out by Wii 2008).
- Over 50% of all consoles sold, including handhelds, were PS4s
Also biggest month ever for the PlayStation store.
Those Destiny bundles...

I disagree -- Wall St. investors could probably give a fuck about PSN outages as long as the console sells really well month after month.

I meant here. As in why we weren't talking about it.
If anything, we should be worried at how well it is selling, since the network cannot keep up.

I do wonder how one multi-console game could possibly spur so many sales on one gaming system over another. Looks like the advertising dollars were well-spent -and waiting on their first bundle might have spurred things a lot more than MS did with their revolving door or bundles. Still in reality MS put out a potentially better deal than Sony did and it didn't help them at all. That Sony-Activision deal they struck really interests me because it really seemed to benefit both companies a lot.
Will be really interested to see if CoD Advanced Warfare sells better on the XO since that's what the advertising deal is for that game.

This is very true. Though I don't think the network is in that bad shape. A few day-long outages -- not ideal at all, but as someone who made it through the 6 weeks of shutdown a few years ago, this isn't like that. And while it's easy to blame PSN for the #driveclubfiasco, that's not the reason for that mess at all.

All of those "free" copies for XO counted, but the bundled copies with PS4 didn't. Also doesn't include digital, which was pushed pretty hard. I agree that it was good for both Sony and Activision though. On Amazon's best sellers list for 2014, the white Destiny bundle is the second highest selling console, or put another way, it outsold every SKU of XO for the entire year to date. Just one vendor, but damn.
I expect CoD to sell better on PS4, just on install base (and also on bundled copies not counting for XO). But I expect every third party game to sell better on PS4 regardless of marketing arrangement. Madden, FIFA and NHL all sold better on PS4 despite bundles and marketing deals.
