re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

Apparently the release of Second Son helped sales a little, vgchartz (grain of salt) lists 220k consoles sold last week worldwide, 94.7k in the US.

I don't the whole history on some of these writers or Devs but another one is leaving Naughty Dog (Uncharted and Last of Us)....

Uncharted 4 Director Departs Naughty Dog
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...ughty-dog.aspx

"I have in fact made the decision to leave Naughty Dog," Richmond told IGN. "I love the company and the people and know that they will continue to create awesome games going forward. On a happier note, after careful consideration and exploration I have joined Riot Games. There is some really innovative stuff going on here that I can't wait to be a part of."

I'm trying to wrap my head around this considering Riot Games has done what...League of Legends. That's two key people who have left Naughty Dog recently.

SOMETHING must be going on with ND. They are leaving like rats on a sinking ship.

I still have not popped in The Last of Us so I guess I will just wait for the PS4 version.

Richmond is no big loss given that Uncharted 3 is inferior to Uncharted 2 as an overall game (speaking of the main game of UC3 and not the multiplayer of UC2 that Richmond previously directed). The departure of Henning is what I find troubling. Hopefully they don't lose Neil Druckmann given his great work co-writing Uncharted 2 and writing the entirety of The Last of Us.

I just have to say that the Dual Shock 4 is a vast improvement over the Dual Shock 3. Also, it seems like they really cleaned up the whole PS4 presentation. Seems more user friendly.

Now if there was only some more exclusives coming out soon.

3 was a better game. 2 was a better experience, IMO.

I like how the guy quoted in the article says exactly what I did after the Hennig departure - "shit happens".

re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

Sony seems to be doing some housecleaning and cost cutting at their studios, and I actually think it's a bit past due. Their WWS have put out a ton of amazing games over the past couple of generations, but those studios have also been notoriously slow, have delivered some subpar products the past 4-5 years, and have chosen expensive projects that clearly were never going to make money (even if some people really liked them).

That doesn't really explain Naughty Dog or Sucker Punch which seemed to be about individuals wanting to do other stuff, but it definitely covers the Santa Monica and Europe moves.

re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

There might be a actual positive in all this. People coming and going might be the result of the new consoles power giving Devs far more possibilities than ever hence games that once were just a thought now stand to be a real possibility. How many stories have we seen just in the few months the PS4 has been out with Devs complementing the power of the PS4 giving them all sorts of options.

And don't forget...the list that's out with all the games coming this year; that's no slouch. I think with Devs making games for the PS3 and 360 they were restrained to the size of a building. Now they have a whole city...We've seen it with Infamous Second Son and we'll probably see it with Watch Dogs. Just a far larger playground than ever before. And I believe the gaming industry will expand and shift just like that...so hopefully a good sign.

re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

I don't know how much each person played into it, but I just know they need a new gameplay director crossed with whoever did the storyline/direction of Uncharted 2 or The Last of Us.

Naughty Dog's recent catalog is a prime example of weak gameplay with spectacular production values.

Hell I wouldn't be opposed to them taking everything they have learned over the last decade and making a mind-bottling new version of Jax and Daxter.

They say things like that with every new generation. And I could point out that while Second Son is prettier, and there are some technical advances to it, it's not that far beyond what Sucker Punch accomplished in inFAMOUS 2.

As for Watch Dogs, they delayed the game 7 months because GTA V blew them out of the water, or at the very least had them shaking in their boots. You don't delay that close to release unless you have crippling bugs, or fear.

What I'm saying is that the hardware isn't nearly as important as people that know how to make a good freaking game. Sony got rid of most of Santa Monica because they couldn't make a decent game even after $100 million had been pumped into it. That's just the nature of the beast.

The real problem in the gaming industry, much like most industries, is that once you find a success, you want to ride it as long as you can. I mean I look at my PS4 games and I see 3 sequels and a new IP that ended up being mostly ignored (Knack). Sadly, with games becoming more expensive to produce, the companies are no longer taking the risks they once did.

Not even close.

It was one of three projects/teams, and a large part of Santa Monica's work is consulting/overseeing projects from other studios (The Order as an example).

Santa Monica is still Sony's largest studio by quite a margin.

Got a PS4 at Target during my lunch break! They had about 4 systems. I guess with Infamous a lot more PS4's got sold and they received a lot more stock as result. Also nabbed the last copy of Second Son
