If the machine is designed to support used games and the resale of games, then what's the point of having any authentication system at all? Shouldn't it be as simple as play the game if the disc is in the tray, and don't play the game if the disc is not in the tray?

Yes, it's designed to have all games installed and played directly from the hard drive without needing to swap discs, thus the need for authentication. That much, at least, has been confirmed.

It's a limitation of optical media in general. Games loaded more quickly on the 360, which used DVDs, if you installed it on the hard drive first.
