Actually it says that the RETAILER cut is 10%. So MS and the publisher get 90%

Great point. I sometimes do wish achievements never existed. It used to be I played a game for the ending (or a perfect season) and that's it. Now, I'm trying to find every last crate or special item or do things in a funky format. It's awesome and it's a curse. Maybe I'm just peeved that it would rather not extend to other parts of my life, that's all :).

I've been saying for a while now that achievements for things like Netflix, etc. were an inevitable addition for next gen. It's all part of the gamification strategy, not to mention they've caught on that the addition of achievements helps to sell things.

There have already been social studies done on this kind of thing that have proven to be extremely effective. People are more willing to do things if there is a reward, even if it's a meaningless one. Being able to compare your "score" to that of other people just makes it that much more appealing. The human brain is wired that way, and you can bet that they're going to milk it for all it's worth (they've already started, in fact -- DLC has been proven to sell more if it adds achievements).

Good advice. And since I won't be wasting my time playing Xbox One, I'll have much more time for living. Or playing PS4. Depending.

Well many companies offer an incentive program for perfect attendance, and you're wife/partner may offer special rewards for not being a lazy bastard and taking particular care with personal hygiene.

Those are just your examples, but shitloads of companies banks, credit cards, hotels, airlines etc. all have achievement systems and if MS happens to get more people watching certain programs I'm sure they'll be richly rewarded by networks. You may think you don't want it to extend beyond games but they did not invent the practice.

If there's a Netflix achievement for watching 1980's sex comedies after midnight, I'll be rolling in the points.

I remember a lot of "This is the dumbest thing ever" type posts when gaming achievements were first announced. Now look at where we are.

Also, comparing $60 console games to $1-$10 mobile games isn't really applicable. For one thing, most people are okay with losing $5 on a game that looks cool but turns out to be meh. $60 is a harder loss to swallow. Also, those digital games will transfer to future mobile devices, as long as you stay on the some OS. Not so with the XO.

If the used market goes away, the $60 price point won't stick.

A couple random responses:

To the claim that selling the licenses back will be jumping through so many more hoops. I imagine it will be as simple as "hit X, refund this license for 15$ credit? y/n." That would be significantly easier than mailing it to Amazon or driving to Gamestop. Will I get as much credit? Not at all... but it isn't more hoops and - to be honest - I'm fine getting less back if it is significantly simpler.

Achievements in TV and other things will be awesome. Heck, I already chase after badges in the Untapped for drinking various beers. I would do the same thing for TV.

I also predict the mobile market changing. I buy a bunch of board games on iOS and prices are definitely going up. They do not average the buck a download that many games do. And I think it is a good thing. The quality of the games have also been going up. I will happily pay 15-20$ for a high quality iPad game. I am sure for a console I would happily do 20-30 easily.

Publishers do not have a right to collect a fee if the game is re-sold. They sold it once, end of story. Perhaps they should push GameStop out of business if they are so concerned with the used game market instead of getting into bed with them.

Never thought I would say this, but if the PS4 avoids this license clusterfuck, I hope it destroys the XO in sales.

While I was not the least bit interested in the waving of the arms and talking to turn the thing on and surfing the web while watching a movie, this new potential aspect is horrific. I buy about a third of my games used, and I sell games once I'm done with them on half.com. I also borrow games from friends, and if I really like them I buy them new (which would go away). Sometimes I even rent them from Redbox (which would also go away). If this actually happens, I'll simply buy way fewer games. The whole idea disgusts me.

This is really all that needs to happen. Enough people who aren't willing to pay $60 will then lead to $50 and then to $40 etc. I'm guessing most people would be fine with $40 even if they could not resell their games. But many people spend $60 on a game becasue they know they can resell it once their done playing it. Bottom line though is the Xbox One is going to have some killer games that many people won't mind paying $60 for (Halo, COD, Borderlands, Skyrim, etc, etc.)

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

Here's why I don't see games going over $59.99:
  1. DLC. Your AAA titles make a killing in DLC. Call of Duty: Black Ops II made over $1.5 billion in retail sales, but has made over an additional $250 million plus off their season pass ($49.99 a pop) sales alone. Most AAA games' DLC (like Borderlands 2 and Halo 4) don't gross as much in DLC, but for obvious reasons (season passes are only $24.99).

  2. If Microsoft is trying to eliminate the middle man in terms of used game sales, more money <s>will</s> should end up going to the developer and publishers. GameStop is currently selling used copies of Tomb Raider for $37.99, $2 less than a brand new copy goes for. Square Enix will see not a dime for that used sale GameStop completes. In fact, GameStop makes anywhere from $10 - $25 on the sale based upon how much it purchased the game for in the first place. Why should GameStop be able to make money off used games and the actual people who created the game can't and/or don't? This then raises other questions:

    • Why should GameStop determine the price of second-hand titles?

    • Can I sell my copy of a game to a friend at my asking price, have the license transfer off my XO, and be placed onto his? What if I don't like the game and want to gift it to someone? Could I do the same?

    • What if I could just trade the game in online and have a new game instantly placed on my console at little-to-no additional cost?

Once you start digging in deep, it might not be the worst idea in the world. It all depends now on how Microsoft executes the idea. Again, we still won't know more until E3 or even closer to the launch of the unit itself. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

  3. More competition. With both the XO and PS4 now moving to PC-based architecture, it'll be far easier than for developers to port games over to the XO, PS4, PC, and everything else in-between. A developer can do all the porting in-house rather than having to go to another developer to make the port. This then could lead to questions on why would I buy the game on my XO for $59.99 when there might be a Steam sale on it for a fraction of the cost or I can stream it to my PS4 for a subscription based fee? In terms of a pricing standpoint, this upcoming generation might bring in a new wave of aggressiveness and might actually bring console game sales down. I, for one, welcome Steam-esque sales on the PSN and Live Marketplace.
... and of course, I could be entirely wrong on all this and we all get fucked over. Then we can usher in another golden era of PC gaming where used games don't exist! :)

If that's true than GameStop is signing their own death warrant. They go from making 100% pure profit (minus what they bought it for) to 10%? That doesn't even sound right.
