Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'm seriously curious : is anyone in this thread more excited about the new Xbox console than they were before the press conference yesterday?

 But I am certifiably crazy :D

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I guess I'm more upset about my virtual purchases not transferring over.

Furthermore:
Xbox Live Gold memberships on Xbox One will be flexible and streamlined, according to Microsoft, allowing console owners to use their Gold account on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 and letting multiple users share the same account. "If you have an Xbox Gold membership today for 360 and you buy an Xbox One, your membership applies to both systems," Microsoft's Phil Harrison told Polygon. "You don't have to get another subscription." Multiple members of a household will be able to share a single account, Harrison said, explaining, "Anybody who has usage privilege on that machine can use it." Microsoft's Ben Kilgore said that multiple accounts will be able to ride on the same Xbox Live Gold membership, but that individual users will have access to their own friends lists and other personalizations. "We want to make sure that you and your son both have your own account," Kilgore said, in describing the case of a father and son sharing an Xbox Live Gold membership. "We want you log in to get your stuff, and when he logs in to get his stuff. On that console, if you have Gold, he can use Gold as well." Kilgore said that Microsoft is still working out the specifics of how players follow and befriend each other. One-way relationships may be part of Xbox Live's friends architecture, "something that's under development right now," and that Microsoft is working to determine "who your true two-way relationship friends are." |

Wanna play a video game? Here....jump through this hoop, and then jump through this hoop, and oh wait...jump through this hoop. All set...oh wait, playing with a used game?...pay this fee. Great, now you can play, oops sorry you're not connected to the internet....

^ yep. They've taken the simplicity of a game machine, (pop a cartridge/disc in, press play) and made it the most over complicated mess of shit ever.
I guess it was only a matter of time. Windows anyone? Seems like every couple of iterations they fuck it up, now it's bled over into the video game division.

I love this. Let's see, is there a way we can talk down to upset customers, bag on the launch of our own existing product that they love and spent a lot of money on for seven years, and also kind of make us look like idiots? Hmmm, yep, got it.

It's weird how similar Microsoft is coming off now to the way Sony came off at the PS3 launch.

If true, it seems like this would solve the problem of games being passed around in the same household. In other words: chill out until we have all the info.

Anyone remember DIVX? The rental DVD thing? I guess it must have been way ahead of its time because it failed miserably.
Some of what's being proposed here and elsewhere sounds remarkably similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Video_Express |

Not sold exclusively by Circuit City because they are no longer around, but this time by Microsoft. :) |

It won't solve multiple machines in a single household though. Sure no one will have more than one for a few years, but down the line? Want to let the kids play Lego Batman 3 in the play room instead of the family room? That'll be like taking the disc to a friend's house. Correct?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I read the last several pages of comments and I'm not sure what to think about the Xbox One yet.
Here's a question that I don't know has been addressed or not. Is Xbox still supporting the 360 after the One is released? Will they continue to produce games and keep the Xbox 360 Live server operating? As long as they keep it going, I can live with not getting the One right away and as long at it lets me keep my games. Plus I have a lot of material saved on Xbox Live as well like TV episodes, some movies and downloaded games. The One does look interesting, but at this time, I'm not in a position financially to re-invest hundreds of dollars in a new console and buy new expensive games for it. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Development of new games will migrate over to the new consoles, but the 360 servers will almost certainly continue to operate for years.

Even if they weren't requiring internet or locking games to your account, the locked-in hard drive and the always connected Kinect (with flawless MS software TOTALLY protecting your privacy) would be non-starters. The Kinect should be a glorious playground for hackers and law enforcement. (The low light capabilities of the Kinect looked quite impressive.) The only significant question yet to be resolved is whether or not I will be getting a PS4. |

The 360 will continue to exist and be supported for at least a couple of years, and we are going to see SO many of the same releases on both platforms.

Paranoid much? Maybe the hackers part but what would law enforcement have anything to do with this? Are they really gonna be concerned about some 20-40 year olds sitting on the couch playing games?

The tv and kinect stuff during the reveal was very impressive, as was Quantum Break, but ultimately the cons far outweigh the positive at this point. Of course, details are clear as mud, but the outcome is not looking good. So at this point I'm less than enthused, (down to 40% interest maybe?) and probably out, but E3 could easily swing the needle a little bit. |

But at least the first gen PS3's could play all PS1 and PS2 games.

Backwards compatibility? I'm keeping my 360. Used games? I don't buy em. Always on internet? Can't say I ever remember my Comcast connection being down for more than 30 minutes. No sweat. I'm more annoyed with the TV functionality and multitasking bullshit that I'll never, ever use on a GAME machine. |

I don't play either game, but did no one learn anything from the Sim City and Diablo 3 debacles? Always online sounds innocent enough, but it's still a bad idea. |
