Does anybody actually watch live TV any more (other than sports)??? The few shows I watch, I always watch off DVR or on-demand, and I assume if XO had DVR functionality, they would have mentioned it. I also can't help but wonder how much RAM all of that shit uses. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
People do realize Microsoft is just trying to expand the marketplace with those TV features right? Nastyass gamers don't care, Microsoft is trying to win the battle for your TV and it's a good stride forward. Also I still watch live TV - albeit it's more of a time killer than any actual programs, I tend to watch those on demand.
That said, all the other shit makes it sound like a crippled PC. I don't buy used games frequently, but I do borrow and lend games out all the time with co-workers. Always on Internet isn't actually required so I don't mind that one. Hopefully they're just presenting this really poorly, Microsoft never has had the best PR. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I will say if XBOX Live ends up with NFL Sunday Ticket, I will sing MS's praise because the NFL and the NBA are the only things keeping me from dumping Comcast TV entirely.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
The problem with Sunday Ticket is you can't cut cable/satellite because they block out your home team (if you live in their market), unless you have an antenna. And even with an antenna, pretty much all NBA/MLB games are on a local cable channel, no OTA. And I assume those are blacked out too with the MLB/NBA season pass thingy. Plus MNF, which you can watch on ESPNGo, IF you subscribe to cable.
I don't see how any non-gamer will choose a $400-$500 home entertainment center, with a $50 yearly charge, over a $100 apple-tv, or $60 roku. Sure it does more, but not $400 more to a non-gamer. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'd safely put Roku at the $100 level now, the 3 is $100 and it is awesome.
I don't see non-gamers spending $400 - $500, but it is an additional justification outside of a dedicated "game box", and I'm sure Microsoft will fork it and release the TV functions as a $100 box sometime soon. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'm just amused by the whole "FUCK THIS SHIT I'M GOING PC ONLY" mentality that's growing from this. PC gaming is nothing but DRM and there's no used market.

Can't say I'm going 100% PC Gaming but, like Rich said, you can purchase new games on the cheap, not to mention revisit old gems with new updated mods.

Always online sounds innocent enough, but it's still a bad idea. ... ... No. You're wrong. Sim City and Diablo 3 require you to connect to a server to play the game rather than playing it locally on your hard drive. If Origin or Battle.net is down, have fun not playing the game. The Xbox One requires you to connect to the internet once every 24 hours to "check in" making sure you haven't breached the terms and agreements. Entirely different than comparing it to the Sim City shit show, but it's also the same thing Steam does every time you open the application. :D

But it's also dirt cheap. I bought Borderlands 2 for $22 when it launched, I bought Alan Wake for $2 yesterday. Plus Steam Sales...
Borderlands 2: $35 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: $11 Halo 4 (Limited Edition): $0 Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Collector's Edition): $24 ... but I've spent just as much as those totals during a single Steam sale. I just love throwing money away. |

Now if someone was saying "Fuck xbox one, I am going to spend 2000 bucks and go buy a pc" I would agree with your quote.... |

I am a bit concerned by him saying "certain" single player games will work without internet. The majority of them should work if they're single player games.

If PC ever overtook consoles for market share, I suspect those fire sales would largely dry up. |

Console manufacturers are subsidizing hardware costs and making up for it with game sales. The same is not true for PCs. Steam and PC game companies are not subsidizing hardware costs. There is also no physical media. There are also no middlemen taking a big cut of the pie. |

Comfortable seating with a controller you'll know will always work, playing a system that you don't have to fiddle with.
At this point, as long as your computer meets the specs and you're not trying to run it on a non-gaming laptop, I doubt you'll run into any trouble. I've had more trouble with my 360, honestly. I'm replaying Mass Effect right now and the thing has frozen on me twice so far, necessitating a hard reset. |
