Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
An update has been added to the Kotaku article quoting Phil Harrison:
Update: Sounds like things are a mess over at Microsoft. Now they're telling Polygon that Harrison's comments illustrate a "potential scenario." "While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail," a Microsoft rep said. "There have been reports of a specific time period — those were discussions of potential scenarios, but we have not confirmed any details today, nor will we be." As I said earlier, many grains of salt are needed right now, especially when Kotaku is the source. |

So...clear as mud then? As I said earlier, many grains of salt are needed right now, especially when Kotaku is the source. They are probably trying to figure out how to spin the new model for game ownership they are trying. It will be an interesting time this next few months. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Maybe they expected the masses to be bowled over by the tv and Kinect shit and let the used games thing slide under the radar? or just accept it like sheep?
I bet there is a boardroom full of execs right now panicking. Big Xbox One reveal and the only talking point out of it is used games. Spin. Spin. Spin. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I've been saying for some time that they would really have to fuck up their newest console for me not to get it ASAP. The used game thing is a non issue in my house but I rental a ton of games so it looks like I'll most likely be totally screwed. Someone mentioned digital rentals on another forum and that would be the only saving grace for this system. Let me rent games directly from MS and just block out the multiplayer or certain modes of the game and I'd still be ok with that.
After getting burned a bit with the WiiU I'm far more cautious now about what plans they have and what future the system might have. Part of me is hesitant about switching over to the PS4 completely but we'll see what everyone presents at E3. |

Kotaku reported what Harrison said. The fact that Microsoft is now backpedaling from that doesn't make Kotaku less reliable.

Video has been posted twice, but I've gotta say...pretty good summary.

The point remains that nobody seems to know anything for sure yet. |

So what are people in real life saying? Most of my gaming friends have scoffed at the used games thing, and the always online. Another friend who is an admitted MS lover Sony hater is ready to get one regardless. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
They are still talking with the details with publishers and retailers.
My guess: you should be able to play any game... offline. So any disc becames basically a "full demo", you don't have online connectivity, achievements, etc. until you enter your activation code. I know, that sucks, but that should be a good enough compromise. Will they do it? Hmmm... |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I wonder if every XBLA developer who had something planned to release between now and the XO launch is thinking... Well shit.
Because I can't foresee really buying anything other than map packs on XBL until the new console hits. Software questions are itching at me now. I want to know if GTAV will have a specific XO version that will run better and look nicer. What about Sleeping Dogs. Safe assumption that CoD:Ghosts will have a specific XO version. What about a new Phantom Dust? Or Gladius? ;) |

All I can think is the reality is bad, but they're confident the rumor mill will churn up worse in the next three weeks. Then they come to E3 and news that would've really pissed people off seems like a relief by comparison. I think it's a risky strategy, likely to be more detrimental than being upfront, but it's the only thing I can think of that kind of makes sense.
specifically: If we hadn't heard that internally some at Microsoft are shocked by the negative reaction, I'd suggest maybe this was the plan all along. Show the hardware early, take the knocks now, then hope things improve at E3 (and beyond) when we start seeing what's really important: the games. If there really are eight new properties coming, that's something to get excited for, right? Those EA Sports games looked pretty damn good, no? Maybe enough so we'd figure, hey, these games are so good it's worth putting up with all this other crap. |

I don't want to talk to it, or grip it in thin air, or search the internet, or post to facebook, or have it call me by name, or turn it on just to change the channels on my fucking TV. I've tried cameras and sensor bars, and I'm done with that nonsense too. For a console as entertainment hub, my PS3 goes about as far as I want it to go and just a bit further. I play games on it, watch blu-rays on it, and maybe a bit of Netflix. Xbox One had me at Blu-ray and then lost me with pretty much everything else. Oh, and it would be nice if it played games, preferably some compelling exclusive ones. It's like these assclowns at MS and Sony don't know that my smartphone is always at arm's reach, and my universal remote isn't that fucking complicated. -rolleyes- |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I love that direct from Harrison's mouth, your friend can "borrow" your game, if he pays full price. What the fuck kind of answer is that? Why do corporate people think they can say such ridiculous things and no one will catch it?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I think it's obvious from the interview that MS is separating the rights and ability to play the game and the install media. So when asked if you can let a friend borrow your copy of a game, I think Harris interpreted that as letting a friend use your install media to avoid downloading the game.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I own all 3 consoles last generation. Have a WiiU, Vita and 3DS. I have no favorite. Not a fanboy of any machine.
I have to say I think it is freaking hilarious after Major Nelson and whothehellever talking shit on Sony for not showing the physical box at their press event, these jackweeds show up at their own press event and one hand has no idea what the other is doing with regards to the only questions anyone had about their console. What is the online requirement and what is the deal with used/rental games. Comic goldmine. You can't make this stuff up. |
