That crowd will like the Kinect too, especially young girls who can't get enough of Just Dance games, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't disagree with this sentiment, and I don't look forward to running into more of them on PSN, but for grins I just asked my 15 year old whether he talked about the new consoles with his friends, and his exact words were:

Yeah, just that they are getting PS4s.
I asked him why, and his exact word were:

They just don't like the idea of the Xbox One, and they think they Wii U is a flop.
I didn't press him on what he meant by "the idea" of Xbox One to see if he knew details, but it illustrates a negative perception. Obviously, he's an anecdotal sample of one, and it's worth noting that he has a PS3, so he might be on that "team", but he's never had a problem in the past telling me that his friends liked the 360 better.

By "getting PS4s" does he mean their parents are getting them PS4s?

And you're smart by not pressing on the issue of the "idea" of the Xbox One, since that statement is ironically thoughtless.

Of course that's what's happening, but the parents are even more clueless than the kids. They buy what the kids ask for.

I have two Xbox 360s and game on them several times a week and I don't like the idea of the Xbox One.

I won't press you on what you mean by "the idea" either, since it's ironically thoughtless.

The statement is ironically thoughtless. Let's not resort to name calling.

I just can't believe a 15 year-old kid isn't as clued-in as a bunch of grown-ass men that spend their days reading, watching, and absorbing all the news instead of doing their fucking jobs.

I, for one, am thrilled that your kid is focusing on more important things in his day-to-day life, chess.

Maybe that was the case 20 years ago, but most parents today have played video games. Regardless, the idea of a kid "getting" a system ridiculous.

Fixed ;)

Having played Goldeneye on somebody's N64 back in college does not make one savvy on today's gaming systems. Especially moms.

My wife had a PS1 and played a bunch of games on it. Has the idea of game systems really changed so much since then? Aside from online multiplayer, controller enhancements, and better graphics, not too much.

...I don't understand what you are talking about. Are you just annoyed by the phrase? Should they have said "my parents are getting me a system?"

I'm 99.9% percent sure that as a kid, I would have said exactly the same thing.

I'm getting one of these systems for myself that my kids will play. But I am probably in the minority when it comes to parents. I was told at a recent neighborhood party that we are considered the "cool young parents" which is hilarious to me. But I guarantee we are FAR more savvy about games than most of the other parents around us.

His kid's friends are talking about PS4. Nothing about that anecdote indicates his kid does anything more than play video games. He might be spending his time masturbating for all you know.

And you have no idea what he or any of his friends really think or know based on a second-or-third-hand account that admittedly let it lie short of full understanding.

Yes, the phrasing annoys me. It implies entitlement, or that they actually bought a system. I was greatful for any system my poor parents were able to afford.

But anyway, just because your neighborhood doesn't have "cool young parents" doesn't mean you are in the minority. Most gamers are adult age now, so it seems logical to assume most people who buy these systems now are not just buying them for their kids. Some are I'm sure, but this isn't 80s or 90s anymore.

That was my point. I was replying to someone who claimed to know differently. It was another half-assed anecdotal evidence approach that chess is using with his last few posts or so.

But you have no idea if pressing for more information would have yielded "ironically thoughtless" reasoning. Even if they don't have all the information, that doesn't mean they're incapable of having thoughts and opinions and feelings.

Those of us here on a message board mid-day Wednesday are more inclined to know more, too much more usually, than others. We're the informed minority, but that doesn't make us right.

My point was he shouldn't have to press to get a thoughtful opinion. Not liking the idea of something means absolutely nothing. That's why I called it thoughtless. I tend not to press further when people make thoughtless comments, as I generally know I wouldn't have much a thoughtful discussion.

No one is saying anyone is right about anything. Where do you come up with this stuff?

It's not a complaint, just inaccurate within the context of discussion.

I disagree, I think "getting" doesn't imply that the child is involved in the monetary transaction. It's not any different from asking someone "What did you get for Christmas?"

 at the idea that a teenage kid is "thoughtlessly ironic" or "uninformed" because he gives his parents one sentence answers. A ten year old will talk your ear off, but teenagers are ruthlessly efficient with the info.

He absolutely plays games, probably more than me, but he gravitates to older SNES and GBA stuff because he has great taste. Hopefully he masturbates a bit too. WTF, Brack, is this actually how you talk to people???

I doubt many of those kids are counting on "getting" a PS4 this year, but they are surely capable of knowing what they want, just as we all knew what we wanted. I'm leaning toward getting my son a Vita so he can remote play my PS4, but that's another thing entirely, and I don't think $200 is unreasonable for Xmas.

It's very different. That is past tense and clearly receiving a gift. Knowing you're getting something in the future is different and presumptuous.
