Sony's cards are on the table. There is no legitimate reason not to announce a date now.

If that were the case, they would have just immediately said "November 14th. Boom." and then made mushroom cloud gestures with their hands. For Kinect.

It's about the general public and how they view Microsoft and Xbox as brands, and I really think the best thing they could do is one really straightforward press release with as many details as they can possibly give, because the uncertainty and backtracking makes the brand look weak and unsteady.

General public aren't typically first adopters of gaming systems. Joe six-pack and Susie Soccermom really won't even know anything about the whole situation of where Xbox One started and ended. Saying not having a date now is making them look weak is ridiculous. Apple announces a new product and it is on sale 2 weeks later. Why do they consistently get a pass but Microsoft doesn't in this situation. It really is no different when you look at it.

The date is irrelevant. We know it comes out before X-mas. We know it will sell out. I just hope it's a Friday so I can play all weekend ;)

Thinking they are showing weakness by not saying an exact date yet is ridiculous. Thinking they are having problems manufacturing the product this late in the game is also ridiculous. They know what they are doing, they have been planning the creation of this device for years. Its not like they are scrambling trying to piece something together a week or two before they planned on being ready. They were ready a long time ago. Sony has yet to provide a working retail kit, MS had retail kits at Gamescom.

Agreed, I mentioned that before, no reason it has to be at an event or trade show. Press and media get everything right away anyway.

Just let Major Nelson announce it on Twitter. Instant buzz. Let the net run with it for a few hours and have a press release ready for later in the day.

Do you really think the general public cares? I don't. I work with a large group of people, a lot of them gamers. A large portion of them don't know shit about these systems, especially release dates. All they know is that the other nerds at work are all giddy about November.

Re: Xbox One: The Only Choice for Rational Gamers

I remain convinced that Microsoft went with "November" as a release announcement to give themselves as much wiggle room as possible to get this thing out. It made no sense to do that and then release at the beginning of the month.

If that was the plan they would have announced the 8th or whatever early date when they said November.

Pretty much everything they have changed is firmware based, not hardware. That's why you are still required to plug into the internet to install the thing when you buy it, to patch all the new crap.

Still amuses me that people bitched about a required 24/7 internet connection, but are now happy even though you still need one to hook it up. Apparently people can make internet magically appear for one day, but never again ;)

E3, they said something cocky about Sony recently and how they used retail kits, while the "other guys" had nothing at Gamescom.

You don't see the difference between "once, briefly" and "always"?

No kidding. My issue was always that I have a good connection, but between router issues and the rare outage, it has gone down a few times in the last few years. And that shouldn't brick a game console.

Re: Xbox One: The Only Choice for Rational Gamers

Yeah, the general public doesn't even know that they are releasing new consoles this year. They are "so both companies are releasing a new playstation(you know how they call both consoles by the same name, although lately they may be called xboxes) this year?"

This kind of helped with my wife, she just saw that I traded in one of my old Xbox 360s, and asked me where was the new one? :D Oh no, that's not releasing until November I said... I don't think she still knows this is an unique event. And I'm 100% sure she doesn't care about it.

Since no one knows much about Fighters Within, a title due at launch for the One, here's a press release about the middleware:

Tokyo, Japan – August 28, 2013 – Silicon Studio, a high-end middleware provider and game developer announced today that independent studio Daoka is utilizing Silicon Studio’s middleware solution, YEBIS 2, in the upcoming Kinect-enabled title Fighter Within, published by Ubisoft for Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft. Utilizing the power of Xbox One and Kinect for Xbox One, Fighter Within delivers the long awaited motion fighting promise, allowing players to throw punches and kicks in the most immersive and competitive brawling experience available in gaming.

“YEBIS 2 allowed us to implement state of the art post processing effects in our game,” said Yves Grolet, studio director at Daoka. “This saved us a great deal of time and allowed us to significantly raise the visual quality of our next gen title, Fighter Within.”

In addition to providing next-gen gameplay mechanics, through the power of YEBIS 2, Daoka is bringing the best in next-gen visual effects, including tone mapping and color grading, glare effects, depth of field, anti-aliasing, and god rays. Fighter Within sets a high standard of visual effects for Xbox One, launching this fall.

“By utilizing YEBIS 2,” says Takehiro Terada, CEO of Silicon Studio “Daoka can create the ground-breaking effects available in YEBIS 2 without compromising development time, money, and resources. This is a beautiful looking game, in large part due to this newly formed relationship.”

Players can see the powerful visual effects brought to Fighter Within by downloading the following screenshots HERE: fighter-within.ubi.com/

That's because it's technically the successor to Fighters Uncaged.

Which was god awful.

No one actually wants to punch and kick in a fighting game.

Hell, I played Mike Tyson's Punch Out with my Power Glove back in the day and my arm was tired after fighting Glass Joe.

At this point, it's about branding. MS has already done a lot of damage to the XBox brand, and they don't seem to see that they are continuing to do damage. They look like they don't know what they are doing.

I'm no expert in PR, but it seems to me that even if they have to launch after Sony, it is in their interest to remove as much uncertainty as they can from this launch.

How many people who aren't loyalists and haven't preordered yet are even keeping up with the fact that a release date hasn't been announced? I'm guessing somewhere very close to zero. This is an attempt to create drama ("OH MY GOD THE CLOCK IS TICKING MICROSOFT!!") where none actually exists. The general public who aren't even picking up a new console in 2013 don't care about the release date. Many people who will eventually own an Xbox One don't even know that it exists yet.

It's geek amusement. We aren't 70m strong, so in the long term it doesn't matter.

Sure, most adults don't follow or talk about this stuff, but you're discounting the one group that Microsoft has discounted through this entire process with their high price tag, mandatory internet and DRM (former) and Kinect: Kids

They talk about this stuff and are more savvy than we give them credit for, and inevitably, one system becomes "cooler" than the others.

It's August 28th. These systems aren't coming out until November. MS has at least a month or so of cushion to announce a release date. The general public doesn't give a shit about this right now, despite what you think chess.

Smart phones sometimes announce release dates just days or sooner before they are released, like iphones, so even waiting until a month before release to announce a release date isn't ridiculous by any standard.

The Xbox One includes Kinect and a headset, which certainly justify the price. The exclusives look great. Sony just looks desperate with their price drop and release date and are trying to hide the fact that they just don't have enough AAA launch exclusive titles. I'm sure their indie games will be fun, but that's not why I would buy a next gen console.

This is coming from a person who's never owned and Xbox or Playstation of any generation.

I don't want to play with kids, so I hope all of them get a PS4.

And kids aren't savvy, they just think they are.

Depending on the age of the kid, the Kinect is the one thing that young kids do seem to enjoy based on my completely anecdotal evidence.
