God, the AA battery system is so awful. Ain't nobody got time for that. And the plug & play kits are always cheaply made or expensive.

Why they couldn't just make the controller rechargeable is beyond me. This isn't 2005...

Exactly, it is not 2005, so they gave us choices to do what we want instead of being locked in to just 1 power system for the controller.

Like I said, they give us 2 crappy choices.

vs. my PS3 controller from 2008 with a battery that still runs like it was bought yesterday.

Disposable batteries, rechargeable batteries, battery pack... the options could not be any better for the controller.

I've had batteries lose life in my PS3 controllers, both dual shock and sixaxis.

Thats what happened to my 360 play & charge battery after about a year.

I don't remember which kind it was, MS seems to have released a million different versions, but it really turned me off from those sold separately charge kits

I'd also rather have corded controllers over AA-battery controllers; testament to how much I hate having them run off disposable batteries

Sorry but wires are 2005. I sat down the other night to play some PS3 only to find a dead controller. Plugged in the short ass cord and left it to charge. Played the WiiU instead. I'm not draping a 10' cord across my room like last gen.

Meanwhile I've owned the MS battery packs and charger, basically since it came out. All still hold a charge like new, and the 360 is my primary console. I'm not sure what I do differently than everyone else but I've yet to have one not hold a charge.

I'm not following... it sounds like you forgot to charge the PS3 controller prior. How is that any different from forgetting to charge the 360 battery pack prior to playing?

See, I think changing batteries is kinda 2005. :) As long as there's a rechargeable pack, even if I have to pay a few bucks to get it, that's okay with me.

When you forget to charge the 360 battery pack you're not suddenly tethered to the console.

That's how the batteries are charged are they not? At least that was my experience when I bought the battery pack. When the wireless was running low, I'd have to plug it into the 360 like a normal wired controller (only the cord was about a foot long tops)

Agreed! Maybe it's just personal preference, but I also feel super wateful going through a bunch of disposable ones. And the 360 controller ate them up really quickly

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

Basically, to sum up this idiotic battery argument:

* Some people have had perfect PS3 controller battery life, therefore superior.
* Some people have had PS3 controller batteries fail, therefore inferior.
* Some people have had perfect 360 controller battery life, therefore superior.
* Some people have had 360 controller batteries fail, therefore inferior.
* The 360 includes an option to use AA batteries when a battery pack does fail, therefore superior.
* Both 360 and PS3 allow you to plug your controller into the console and play video games.

because you know, if the 360 battery pack is out, i can still replace it with AA batteries. can't really do that on a PS3 controller. choice is good.

I just don't see the issue with plugging the cord in and playing, provided it's long enough

Ideal would be:
-comes with reliable, but removable, chargeable controller a la PS3
-battery pack sold separately
-AA battery holder sold separately

IMO

Same here. I still have my original battery that came with the play and charge kit when I first bought it. I did buy one extra battery pack since then, just to swap when one dies, but they both still hold a strong charge. I wonder if some are having issues if they prematurely charge them until they are fully dead?

Wait, what? How would you have a rechargeable controller (like the PS3) that also has a separate battery pack (like the 360), which also has a separate AA batter holder (that is included, not sold separately)?

-separate battery pack would be like what chuckd posted above for those who REALLY hate cords that much and want to recharge on a stand
-then an alternate AA-battery pack holder (I guess that could be included with the system, it really can't be too expensive to produce)

make sense?

Kinect No Longer Mandatory For Xbox One (But Will Still Come With It)

Another backflip? Back in May, Microsoft said that you'll need have the motion-sensing Kinect plugged in at all times in order for your Xbox One to function, but now they're reversing course once again.

"That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," he said.

Asked just how "off" the Kinect can be, Whitten answered totally off.

"You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information. Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work. We still support using it for IR blasting in this mode. You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you’ll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue."

This is yet another entry to add to the list of stunning reversals in Xbox One policy made by Microsoft over the past few months. In June, Microsoft switched course on Xbox DRM, and they've flipped on all sorts of other policies since then.

Microsoft has said they have no intentions of selling an Xbox One without Kinect, so the Kinect is still mandatory in that sense. But Microsoft has changed their minds once or twice before.

UPDATE: And here's Microsoft senior exec Albert Penello, posting on NeoGAF about the flip. (Bolded emphasis mine)

We still believe in Kinect. We aren’t interested in splitting the development base. The more demos I’ve seen, the more I’ve used it – the more impressed I am. The team feels strongly about Kinect, and I hope we’re able to prove that when you use it.

We also have a ton of privacy settings to allow people to turn off the camera, or microphones, or put it in a state just for “Xbox On” and IR blasting – there will be a lot of user control for that.

The thing we all understood, and hence this change, is that there are some scenarios where people just may not be comfortable. We wanted people to be 100% comfortable, so we allow the sensor to be unplugged. And clearly the “it dropped” scenario is possible.

The most obvious thing is watching a DVD/BD, or streaming a movie, or HDMI pass-through, your experience isn’t impacted (except you miss voice and IR blasting)

There is no “gotcha”, but obviously, if there is a game that REQUIRES Kinect (like Rivals), or something where Kinect IS the experience (like Skype), those won’t work.

That said, for people who have privacy concerns there are user control settings, which we believe are great.

Good stuff

I never planned on buying it release day, but this just increased my chances of buying it a year or so down the line

A foot long? That has to be an exaggeration...

As for me, I've had the issue where my PS3 controller was running low on battery, and find the cable that came with it too short to play comfortably while charging. I'm also the rare case that only has one PS3 controller though.

I have a half dozen spare rechargeable batteries for other devices, that I used for my old Wii, other remote controls, etc so it ends up being handy.

Anyone else expect a splash screen for most games telling you to turn on or plugin your Kinect for a "better" experience?
