re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
It sucks that they aren't using non-replaceable batteries? Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite.
|
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
I dunno. The built in battery I thought was the only redeeming quality of the shitty PS3 controller.
|
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Why? All it does is limit your options.
|
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
As someone who's used Microsoft's "Charge & Play Kit", let me say you're lucky that they're sticking with AA batteries. The Charge & Play won't hold charges worth a damn; it needs to be plugged in after just a few play sessions.
Buy yourself 4 Enloop AA and a charger and you'll be set for years of nearly uninterrupted play. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Exactly.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
We've been through the battery discussion already, and I wasn't looking to rehash it or stir the pot. I just thought it was a funny thing for Major Nelson to tweet. If I didn't know better, I'd say they were trolling their own console.
Coming from me, some of you will take this as some kind of Sony loyalty thing, but whatever. I simply hate AA batteries. I guess if I had a good smart charger and one brand of rechargeables that I could leave on the charger, I'd feel slightly differently, but I generally don't want to be fiddling with battery covers and batteries in 2013. I just want to plug stuff in and have it work. I acknowledge but don't agree with the flexibility argument for AAs. I think most people get two controllers for their consoles, so it's super easy to swap them out. And if you only have one controller, I fail to see how buying AA batteries or a charge and play is a better or cheaper alternative to a charging stand (the neatest and simplest option) or even a 10'-15' mini-USB cable for emergencies. They go for $1.27 on monoprice, or $1.60 if you prefer gold plated. IMO, Sony should have put a 10' one in the box, as their cost difference would have been near zero...pennies at most. I also don't agree with the "when the internal battery fails" argument. I've never had a device of any variety thats usefulness outlasted its lithium ion battery. And on the extremely slim chance one does die, PS3 controller batteries go for about $10 on ebay and are plug and play. To be clear, I acknowlege that the 360 controller was better than PS3 in virtually every other way, so please don't jump down my throat. I just don't like fiddling with batteries. My favorite game accessory I bought this year: http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/74...16_500X500.jpg |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
I will be buy a couple battery packs for the controller like I have now for the 360.
I do love the choice of being able to use the AA batteries I already have. One thing I do not like about the One controllers is the fact that if you plug it to charge, it shuts off the wireless radios. That would be fine if I wanted to run the cable across the floor to the console and hope the animals don't snag it, but I charge using the computer or wall outlet that is next to me... so that part would suck if you can't disable the radios from turning off when plugged in to charge. |

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Here's a link to an entire article on the controller: http://kotaku.com/how-the-xbox-one-c...ged-1109126240
I'm extremely interested in this line: "though he noted that the controllers radio transmitter will be turned off if/when the controller is plugged into the console via a micro-USB cable, allowing signals to be sent strictly through the wire." Does this mean we can finally use our wireless controllers on the PC with a simple cable, as opposed to buying an entirely different, wired controller? That would be awesome! |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
In that very article:
"Microsoft also updated us on the compatibility of the new controller with the PC, saying that functionality will be enabled in 2014." So... basically, they'll release Windows drivers next year. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Yeah, but they don't specifically say if there will be a new wired PC controller or if these wireless ones will work. I assume the wireless ones will work, but who knows...

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
I can't think of another reason why plugging it in would turn off the wireless.
I wonder how hard it would be to make the controller a AA charger via USB. That would be the best of all worlds IMO. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Do you even want wired? I'm kind of spoiled on wireless and couldn't go back. However, one possible benefit could be that the controller would stay "connected" to the XO while wired to the PC, so you wouldn't have to keep re-syncing it.
Having to get a new dongle is one reason I wish they had used Bluetooth. Hopefully this time they'll make the dongle small like those "nano" receivers for wireless mice/keyboards. I also hope they release drivers for Win 7. However, I'm not sure if I will even get it for the PC, at least for a while, since it will likely be quite a bit more expensive with the new dongle and all. Other than the D-pad, I'm not seeing enough of a benefit with the new controller, and I've modded my 360 D-pad to where I like it. The vibrating triggers may not even be supported in PC games, but we'll see. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Even if MS only releases an XO controller driver for Win8, there'll be ways around that.
|
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
One of the reader comments on Kotaku about the controller is pretty funny to me; it's ironic that they are doing such a great job and focused on improving basic functionality in the controller without gimmicks that aren't useful, while also being the same company that is pushing the Kinect on people.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Controller works with Kinect yo! without an annoying light you can't turn off.

You really don't even notice the PS4 light on the controller. I didn't even realize it was changing colors from green to red until someone pointed it out.
I thought the "gimmicky" thing they were referring to was the multi-touch pad/button on the Dualshock 4, which I don't think is gimmicky at all. There's some real potential for UIs and map/menu manipulation with that thing, and developers really seem to like it. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
If you could choose the color on the DS4, then I would be happy with a nice Emerald Green. :D
