But if you do, it signs you out of live. Probably not desirable in a game like Forza.

Maybe, but you can turn them down.

The problem I see is in the scenarios where people don't have any internet connection, like the military ones mentioned during the DRM fiasco.

Say a soldier takes an activated Xbox One overseas with him, and then is later sent a copy of Forza 5. That soldier wouldn't be able to play the game at all, offline or otherwise.

Maybe, after the game is shipped, they'll release a complete version of the game on disc. Not one with optional DLC mind you, just a disc that has all the files necessary to play it without having to go online at all.

This is a weird circular Harry Mudd thing that is making my brain hurt. If you have Live, why would you turn down the patch?

There is most definitely a rapid defense force on the forum for anything critical of MS, and there's certainly nothing wrong with pointing it out every now and then. They usually either attack the messenger or find a silver lining in every cloud or accuse people of trolling.

My favorite recent examples:
  • Dumb DRM strategy is dumb. "But free games for all my friends!"
  • 3 operating systems is dumb. "I'll bet we get $2 Angry Birds!"
  • Better RAM is better. "But infinite power of clouds!"
  • Changing hardware specs now would be crazy. "But listening to consumers!"
  • Spontaneous 30 second boo from unpaid attendees. "Sony paid for that."
  • CEO of Respawn implied that Titanfall was a timed exclusive. "Is he a credible source?"
  • Terrible, always-on, $100 Kinect is terrible. "Just don't use it"
  • The quote above.

I didn't mean in general, I meant for Forza 5. If you have access to Live, why would it matter if you can turn down a patch or not?

No idea. In general you want the latest and greatest features, right? It's rare that a patch is undesirable due to functional "gimping".

I really think people are way too sensitive when they post something anti-MS (or even anti-Sony for that matter) and people end up discussing it. If anyone counters something said in a posted link (because posted links immediately become facts!) then it instantly turns into "MONEY HATS!" "COMPANY LINE!" "YOU WORK FOR (COMPANY I JUST POSTED A NEGATIVE LINK TO)!"

I know some of your list is directed at me. Fine, whatever. I just choose not to blindly believe Destructoid and Kotaku. I also choose not to blindly believe Microsoft and Sony. But I'm not discostu either... that guy's clearly trolling us.

From the PS4 thread but also relevant here:

Why Are Some IGN Readers Passing on Xbox One?

The features that make or break opinions of Microsoft’s new console.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/...ng-on-xbox-one

The data are presented in an odd way, and I'm not sure why they did two separate articles that presented the data in different ways, but the summary is:

PS4: 41% at launch + 39% in first year = 80% + 10% wait for games + 10% never = 100%
XB1: 39% at launch and first year combined + 18% wait for games + 43% never = 100%

Note that it's a user survey and not a randomized scientific poll, and it was done just about a week after the DRM change.

I assumed that the "how much does MS pay you?" comment was rhetorical/sarcastic/hyperbole to make a point, but I wouldn't want to speak for that poster. For the record, I'm not accusing anybody of anything except their own personal bias, which we all have.

I'm also a big fan of skepticism and critical thinking, but it seems to me that you are just a bit more willing to give MS the benefit of the doubt than you are any of the sources who are critical, but that could just be my own bias.

Agree that you are nowhere near the worst or most agressive.

Groucho 07-17-13 11:08 AM

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

On the flip side, there are posters who are going out of there way to defend PS4 at every turn. I can think of one in particular.

At any rate, it's probably best if we debate the facts rather than discuss each other's possible bias.

Full disclosure: I know people who work on campus in Redmond, and who are working on the console right this second. So I'm usually pretty tuned in to how true something is. Usually things tend to fall right in the middle of the spectrum. Microsoft PR comes out and says something completely stupid, the press runs the total opposite direction with it, and then the truth actually ends up right about in the middle of what both crowds are shouting.

I don't know anyone at Sony, but I react to that news the same way. PR people are idiots, the internet is a knee-jerk infant, and the truth lies somewhere between the two.

 @ the patch debate. I was simply refuting Groucho's claim that patches are mandatory on the 360. That's simply 100% incorrect. Everything else is just noise.

Groucho 07-17-13 11:31 AM

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

I said they "aren't really optional", which isn't the same as "mandatory". Yes, there are workarounds, but for all intents and purposes you're going to need to install the patch.

Deftones 07-17-13 11:32 AM

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

Yeah, it's not a patch if it is required to work. You can refused any update on most, if not all games on Xbox 360 and it'll still work.

chess 07-17-13 11:52 AM

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

Of all the issues I have with XB1, the fact that it's built around being online isn't really high on the list.

Also, GT5, a similar product at face value, has been updated about a billion times and was fairly broken at launch, so there is a precedent for this kind of thing.

But if you can't install a patch, you can still play the game offline. Meaning that if you have an Xbox 360 that's not connected at all and you go buy a game on disc, you can put that disc in and play the game, no problem.

Michael Corvin 07-17-13 11:54 AM

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

Exactly. Just ship a finished game. I'm annoyed that Pikmin has been bumped 9 months but I'm willing to bet there won't be a day 1 forced update with a large portion of the game to download.

That's my point though. You can play pretty much any game without the patches. You can disconnect the ethernet and will never be prompted to update and play away to your heart's content. So they are completely optional. You don't 'need' to install anything to play any given game. I can boot up Bioshock, Frogger, or Kameo and deny the update and the game will run fine.

'If' you want to play online or 'if' you want a new feature, or 'if' you want weapon balancing, etc is just noise.

:)

Slow news day.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

This Forza news just makes me laugh a bit and enforces my beliefs that MS should have just stayed their original course. The best part is how they "removed the online requirement" yet every single person still has to log in online for their initial setup. People seemed 100% happy with this news, but do they fail to realize that they still need the internet at least one time to play? I don't get it, either you have the damn internet or you don't. Are they going to lug their brand new $500 console to a friends house, use his internet, then go back home to their cave and play their now functioning system? It's ridiculous and they should have just left it alone and tell the thousand people without internet buying a next gen console to go F themselves. Well, I guess they kind of did that last part, but they should have stuck it out. Now we get a half-assed attempt at a system trying to please some idiots.

I can't really see one valid reason to play without internet in this day and age, and if you can't...don't buy the system. Pretty simple, you are not entitled to anything and MS can make whatever they want.

Sorry for the rant, human beings amaze me sometimes.

If there ever is a rapid defense force organized I want to join.

Unless it is like the Earth defense force... because giant robot bugs are creepy.

As to the patch, I wonder if it would be possible to DL it to say a flash drive, send it to whomever and let them apply it to their console? I'm just throwing stuff out there in case some or someone might be in this position. Maybe they can put it on a Flash Drive and for those in special situations can call and get one sent?

Forced connectivity wasn't a dealbreaker to me, but I do kind of resent the idea of Microsoft viewing me as if I'm a pirate by default and can't be trusted. I have broadband, but my connection does go out every once in a while. Sometimes my router's flaky, and I have to schlep upstairs to the complete other side of my house and reboot it. There's zero benefit to me having a console that refuses to let me play a game I paid $60 for if it can't ping MS' servers for permission. There's also just something about the idea that I pay $60 for a game but don't own it.

I agree that Microsoft can do whatever they want, but consumers have the right to react accordingly as well.

K&A, I don't think a single person here is in that situation. Just spitballing.

Stu, I think your 'thousand' estimate is a tad low. I think they should have stayed the course as well just to see how it played out and see if MS could brute force everyone into digital.
