Yes, they will redeem at cash value but once redeemed it will still expire within a year.

I agree there's a limited time to redeem MSP cards (although at least 18 more months). However, I disagree on the reading of how MSP cards will be redeemed after the transition.

Looking at the comments on this article, some people agree with my reading, while some agree with yours:

I guess this means that the phrasing in the FAQ isn't clear enough, and MS may have to clarify them.

Yeah, they need to clarify a lot of things.

Sony's announcements made this the most interesting E3 in awhile!

The first run of Xbox One consoles will be labeled as the Day One Edition and come with an exclusive Achievement and a commemorative controller, according to the Xbox website.

The package, which Microsoft says will be "available in limited quantities at select retailers while supplies last," includes an Xbox One console, Kinect sensor, specially labeled controller and an HDMI cable. The controller is marked with the phrase "Day One 2013" right in the middle, as you can see in the image above.

Microsoft has yet to announce a specific release date for Xbox One, but the company said during its E3 press briefing yesterday that it will launch the console in 21 markets worldwide this year, including in November for $499 in the U.S., £429 in the U.K. and €499 in Europe.

Ever?

I can't recall another E3 with back to back console announcements by the two biggest players and with that kind of epic beatdown.

There have been plenty of train wreck pressers, but not in this kind of context.

All DLC and such is independent of Xbox Live Gold status, so you'll still have access to your Rock Band songs on your console if you let Xbox Live Gold expire, and you should be able to redownload them if needed until MS stops Xbox Live support for the 360.

Xbox Gold Family Packs allowed transferring points between family accounts, but MS stopped offering that several months back. Otherwise, there's no way to transfer points, and the FAQ says it's going to stay that way after the transition.

Please, they could have come out on stage, said "Our system is $399 US, it launches this year, now enjoy this video."

Yep, already covered (and sold out).

Yeah, it's not like it was priced more than the "Day 2 edition."

So do you lose any content you have bought if you let your gold account expire? I know I am safe (like a dumbass) for the next 2.5 years but I am just planning ahead.

The year thing just really pisses me off. I hope there is a huge outcry and they chance their policy on this.

Not as far as I know, you might lose access to your "free" games.

You won't lose any games or DLC, but you'll lose mulitplayer and access to apps like Netflix and Amazon Video that have to go online.

Basically, without Gold you're restricted to buying and downloading games and playing them locally.

I'm wondering if that restriction is actually against gift card laws. From:
http://www.nolo.com/legal-encycloped...ire-27997.html

A happy note for the future -- thanks to the federal Credit CARD Act of 2009, gift certificates issued after August 22, 2010 cannot expire for five years. However, gift card issuers can still charge an "inactivity fee" if the card has not been used within twelve months.

Microsoft hasn't done anything similar to PS+ yet. When they start next month, you might lose the free games they give out each month depending how they structure it. The only time you will lose your crap is if your HD dies after the 360 marketplace get pulled offline.

Live member for 7+ years, 31000+ gamer score, and I'm out. Props to Sony for stepping up, and they'll be getting my $400. MS put forth an overpriced unit with a bunch of junk people don't want (or "solved a problem that didn't exist" per one article re input switching) and restrictions I hate, so that's that. Looking forward to the PS4.

You sound like me but I go back even to the original Xbox and have had the 360 since Oct 2006...getting it mainly for GOW and Halo. but there is no GOW this time around and Halo is a good 12-14 months away.

I've been looking forward to the new gen Xbox for a long time but after yesterday's presentations of both the PS4 and XO...I may just keep using the 360 and jump on the PS4 bandwagon. There seems to be too many questions, if's and but's on the XO, a mandatory Kinect, every once 24hr check-in, used games, etc...The PS4 crew didn't beat around the bush on used games, connection to net and price.

I've spent some time reading this and other forums and I can you there are far more thinking of going from Xbox to PS4 than PS to XO. I'm not throwing in the towel completely on the Xbox yet because anything can happen in the next 2-4 months. It just seems that Sony has their act together way better than MS in terms of looking out for gamers than themselves. I'll keep an eye on other 360 owners and friends if they make the switch or at least get the PS4 and keep the 360 till MS wakes up.

Nope, you should lose nothing that you've paid for. Even the free games you've redeemed as part of the new offer they announced yesterday. That's my understanding.

The year thing just really pisses me off. I hope there is a huge outcry and they chance their policy on this.
I doubt it, honestly. The number of people with large amounts of MS points in their account must be in the low hundreds, if that. MS wants those people (for better or worse), to use that shit. I'm only speculating, but if MS points are handled much like typical retail gift cards, then MS doesn't have the money until you've redeemed the points for DLC, avatar outfits, or whatever, which would be why they're pushing you to use up your current balance within 12 months of the transition. They would probably like to end their partnership with whatever vendor they're dealing with.

I think the smartest move, for anyone with MS points already in their account, would be to wait for the Fall update (so the points become local currency), and spend it on stuff your want (OR, "sell" your gamertag to someone who wants it... that is if you're not getting an XO, and you plan to eventually ditch your 360). I say wait until the Fall update because they specifically said that the points will convert to equal or greater value... so blowing your load now may not be your best bet.

Good points. Thanks for the info and the opinion. Unless something I really want is on sale, I am just going to sit on them for now. I got all the points from good sales so anything I get is a good buy evern if I buy them at full price points.

One other thing that I was thinking about today but MS is just basically telling anyone who doesn't have a good internet connection or doesn't even have an internet connection that they don't want their business. They are giving people like that no choice but to go with the PS4. I know it is hard for any of us to believe it but there are still tons of people on this earth who play video games but they don't have regular internet subscriptions. That is a lot of business that will migrate to the PS4 automatically, no competition whatsoever.

The decision makers at MS are just bewildering me right now. I have been a long time Xbox supporter and everything that has transpired in the last 24 hours is just insane to me.

So, since the next big Microsoft event is BUILD (June 26th to 28th), and it's already known that XBOX is part of that conference, I imagine that's when they're going to "respond" to the PS4 news regarding policies, used games, etc.. I wouldn't expect anything official until then... except maybe another Major Nelson blog post or something.

Microsoft won't "respond" to any of it. They'll stay the course, guaranteed. They think they're doing the right thing, business-wise.

The Day One edition of the console is sold out at Amazon. They're now only selling Standard Editions.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

My final thought is basically this. What most people don't seem to understand is that the disc you purchase for the XBOX isn't a "game" as we currently define it. It is simply a means of transportation for the game data to get to your consoles HD. When you pop the disc in, it just installs the game as it would if you downloaded it. It obviously would need a way to prove that you bought the disc, so people complaining about entering a verification code or confirming online is ridiculous. The PS4 requires the disc to be in the console, so no verification is needed, but developers can still implement them for used game sales. MS is just looking ahead to the future and banking on that, sadly I don't think people fully understand yet. Time will tell, and if they offer digital downloads much cheaper and have Steam-like sales, PS4 will have a tough time keeping up in the long run.

All they need to "backtrack" on is saying "if you are not connected online, then you MUST have the disc in the drive to verify that you bought/own it". That simple fix would solve tons of negative misconceptions about the system.

Again, time will tell but both consoles will do extremely well, and in my eyes, MS has potential to blow Sony away IF they do some amazing sales/bundles for digital games.

I think they are sold out everywhere. GameStop stores only had 8 allotments each. I'm sure Microsoft will announce the exact number later this week. I mean the total Day One consoles. 1 million?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

Yeah, the Day One is pretty much gone, but GS is not reserving the regular console yet. The store by me was allowed 2 more XBOX today for a total of 10, and then 40 normal PS4 systems. I expect to see 20-30 "normal" XBOX systems available for reserve shortly.
