I'm shocked. Completely. I don't think I'll cancel my XO preorder, but my whole perspective has changed. The PS4 will be my primary gaming machine, and the XO will be exclusives only. I just, wow. I don't know how MS survives this. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Going to be interesting to see what MS does now.
This could turn into "Windows 8 Part 2: The XO Saga" |

Now, whether gamers feel that's worth the extra money is another question. |

As far as DRM goes, I have no doubt that Sony was in talks with publishers about it. But clearly those talks didn't go far enough that Sony committed to installing system level DRM checks. What's funny is that just a few days ago people were accusing Sony and MS of collusion. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I think if MS sticks to their insane decisions on DRM, once every 24 hour connection, etc., this is where no having BC hurts them a little more than the PS4 not having BC.
I no longer feel tied to needing to own a new Xbox since none of my shit will work on it. The PS4 is the obvious winner in the other decisions but if the Xbox One had BC, it would at least give me pause. Now, I can just get rid of my PS3, buy a PS4, and just keep my 360 for Rock Band and any other downloaded games. Since I don't give two shits about achievements or my gamertag, there is nothing holding me to stick with the Xbox as a platform (except their controller...but someone will make a decent copycat for the PS4 eventually). I just hope Xbox comes to their senses before a new Halo game come out. I love the series and it is one series that I buy on release day. But I am not going to buy a console for one game. If the PS3 hadn't have been also a blu-ray player, I would have skipped it entirely. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Still probably sticking to my plan of just buying a PS3 now and waiting a few years on either of these new consoles. I want to defend Microsoft, but I can't. I guess we'll see. I shied away from Blu-ray early on due to the concerns of DRM, so maybe all this will be nothing. The 24 hour connection thing probably bothers me more, even though I have a good connection.

He didn't say PS4 has BC.

PS4 does not have BC. They are allowing you to re-buy games and stream them (if what I read is correct). That is not BC. BC is allowing me to put my already purchased games in and play them (or at the very least get a digital copy of it to play).
From the next paragraph of the post you quoted:

I don't think brianluvdvd was saying that the PS4 has BC, or that the PS4 had the advantage regarding BC. Rather he was saying that the lack of true BC on either platform means that customer loyalty isn't tied to their back catalog, meaning that consumers of either platform could switch without being at a disadvantage. Since the Xbox One has more draconian measures than the PS4, the lack of BC on it is likely going to hurt it more than the PS4, as 360 owners jump ship.
From the paragraph of the post you quoted: I was fully ready to jump ship to the Xbone this generation once they confirmed that it had BRD and that neither console had BC. Suffice to say that won't be happening. |

As for other devices that phone home, if AT&T has an outage and your iPhone can't connect to their network, you can still use all the apps on your phone that don't require a data connection. But with the Xbone, if your connection is down for more than a day for any reason, you've got a $500 brick on your hands. Oh, and my friends and I lend games, swap games, and bring games to each other's houses all the time. Live member for 7+ years, 31000+ gamer score, and I'm out. Props to Sony for stepping up, and they'll be getting my $400. MS put forth an overpriced unit with a bunch of junk people don't want (or "solved a problem that didn't exist" per one article re input switching) and restrictions I hate, so that's that. Looking forward to the PS4. |

A fun summary of the conference:

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
No doubt, Microsoft took a beating yesterday, but they have their eye on the long game. I give Microsoft credit for being innovative and having the cajones to go for the magical all in one device. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to pull it off.
A primary focus for Microsoft right now has to be cashing in the publisher friendly used game and DRM positions by securing AAA exclusive games, even if they're six month timed exclusives. Microsoft needs to be able to show how their position results in a tangible competitive advantage. They need more Titanfalls. Something else that has not yet been confirmed, but could be a key card in Microsoft's hand, is the standard retail price of games. Will Microsoft's used game/DRM stance give it the flexibility to make $49.99 the standard for disc games, with perhaps a $39.99 standard for downloaded non-transferable games? That would be an interesting counter-punch to Sony's console price and used game stance. |

Nailed it. PlayStation 4's Price and Policies Humiliate Microsoft's Xbox One at E3 |

The bottom line here is that even Microsoft knows that the DRM, 24 hour Internet, and used game policy are all losers. Otherwise they would have touted these "features" in the conference. Instead they stayed mum. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
That Forbes article did nail it. If Microsoft locks into $59.99 as the standard price for disc games, and as Groucho notes - early indicators say they will, then they have to fall back on building a stable of exclusives that gamers can't do without. Easier said than done.
|
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
The only thing that could save MS at this point is making all digital versions of XO games $29.99.

But basically yeah, Halo, Gears, Forza, Project Gotham Racing, Dance Central, and Dead Rising are about it in terms of franchises. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'm also willing to bet Dead Rising is a timed exclusive.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Last I checked I had 14,000 Microsoft points. I always build them up when I can, especially since they don't expire. So with the transfer to real money now, Microsoft is going to adjust my points to real money. I am ok with this. It also seems that once they change it over I have 1 year to spend it or it is gone. WTF?

Well technically Dead Rising was ported to the Wii so it isn't really exclusive. My bad.
