My first thought about that article is how stupid the complaint was. Of course it's only an incremental improvement -- that's how consoles always are. Nobody was blown away by 360 launch games and most of us here thought the Xbox was "Good enough", but if you compare Halo :CE to Halo 4, there's a world of difference. So it'll take time to totally blow us away -- what was the author expecting.
I agree with discostu that if he's going to publish a lazy, equivocal first-impression article like that, he should probably have added at least a sentence indicating he feels the same way about the PS4 -- it's a high-profile rival product coming out in the same time frame with the same incremental improvements and as a game journalist, it's sort of his duty to at least address the other product and his feeling towards it so that his concerns about the XO are not misconstrued in relation to his opinion of the PS4.

I read Kotaku every day, but yeah. I'm almost expecting Microsoft to give them some money and start seeing the change.

I was going to read first impressions from "normal" people, but stopped myself because I already knew what they were going to say.

Not sure about Kotaku, but I do agree that graphics aren't the big thing for next generation just like they weren't for this generation. Sure this generation's games looked better than last (and only slightly better at first), but the features that differentiated this generation from the PS2/GCN/Xbox era were in the online space with cooperative play, achievements etc.

The games that look "next gen" to me right now don't really have much to do with graphics either. Rather, they combine genres in ways that didn't seem possible before. They are games that seamlessly transition from single-player to co-op to competitive, like The Division or Titanfall, or they combine MMO-like persistance and scale with traditional console action like Destiny or Planetside 2.

Ryse, Dead Rising, Killer Instinct, Driveclub, Forza, Knack, Infamous, CoD Ghosts...all slightly shinier versions of stuff we've been doing for years. The only game I can think of that's blowing me away strictly from a graphical standpoint but isn't really doing anything new is Battlefield 4.

Pretty much all I was getting at. His opinions on next gen not being super impressive is fine, the fact that he makes it seem like only the Xbox has this issue was my complaint.

Kotaku has long been the National Enquirer of games journalism, so I'm not sure why anyone's feathers are ruffled either way.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

This is honestly a generation launch that hasn't gotten me as excited as previous launches. Maybe it is because I am older and have less time to game. Maybe it is because I really can't name any launch titles that leapt out as something interesting.

Actually for the XO the only launch title I can name is CoD: Ghosts... and that Ryse game because I think it will be pretty but boring.

Microsoft has just been giving weird messages and screwing up the marketing to where me, as a consumer who is heavily predisposed to buying their console, isn't super excited. And I am an easily excited and influenced consumer.

The PS4 hasn't piqued my interest other than the free games with PS+ thing (which XBL Gold needs to copy freaking stat). I'm even open to being tempted to buy their system but nothing at launch has leapt out as being a must own.

It just kind of bums me out really. I want to be more excited about the next gen. I want to be hot and heavy for the new Kinect. I want them to wow me with a game that will change things up based on my heart rate. Instead, they say the control scheme will change when I hand a controller to someone.

Yawn.

I really wish Titanfall was available at launch. Or even that my XBLA games would be BC so I could at least convince myself I am buying for CoD and Titanfall and can keep playing Pinball till those come out.

Bleh.

I just really wish a big surprise would drop for something and make me lust after one of the systems again. Instead of shocking new info on DRM policies and stuff that isn't sexy at all.

Agreed wholeheartedly. This was me 6 months ago in regards to the "720:"

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k6...e-my-money.jpg

Now I'm buying the PS4 due to MS's boneheadedness. That and 0 launch games look appealing. Had Dead Rising been as bright and colorful as before, this might be a different discussion. I don't need "Generic looking zombie game #34."

As for the PS4 launch, it's all about Planetside and Infamous, which aren't launch games. Knack would be a purchase if it was $40. So nothing too hot over on that side either, other than the free PS+ games.

So yeah, nothing to "lust after" in either camp for launch day.

I Finally Got My Hands On The Xbox One. Hmm.

What I am not impressed by is the Xbox One. The design is great (I love rectangles), the controller is a near-perfect evolution of the Xbox 360 pad and I'm sure we'll eventually see some of its power and cloud computing enhancements come into play.

For now it just doesn't feel like a next-gen system to me.

Graphics aren't everything, of course. It's just that I'm used to seeing a more dramatic step up from one generation to the next. When the original Xbox gave way to the Xbox 360, there was no mistaking one system's games for the other's. Even the worst Xbox 360 launch titles were distinctively Xbox 360 games, plastic-looking textures and all.

This guy should stop writing.

He gagas over the visual effects that are because of the next-gen systems increased power.

Then he writes drivel:

First he incorrectly compares the graphics, then states graphics are not everything and then states the obvious that you could tell a mostly non-HD gaming system's games looked completely different from an HD gaming system's games.

I disagree. I thought Call of Duty 2 was amazing at the 360 launch, for instance, and while you're right that most launch titles end up sucking, there are very few launches that I can remember thinking that all the games could've been done on the previous gen.

I also disagree that he owes us coverage of the PS4. Should he bash the Wii U as well? I have no idea what kind of bias Kotaku has, but I don't see any from just the snippet of that article posted here. I don't understand why people seem so much more defensive about this upcoming generation. Were there people defending Sony last gen?

The first game I played on the 360 was Perfect Dark Zero.

Immediate buyers remorse.

Then played Kameo and Call of Duty 2 and I was happy as could be.

Forza still has me excited enough to keep my preorder. And once I find out which versions of Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 run the best, I'll pick up both of those.

I also remember playing NFS when it launched for 360 after renting on the original Xbox version. HUGE difference. Even today, that game is still a blast.

The first game I got with my 360 was GOW (Fall of 2002). It was that and Halo that sold me on the 360. I did end up getting COD 2 later on and it was really a good game. I mean wow...what a difference in it compared to the current COD's. It took awhile for them to really get the most out of the 360 but it's been worth it. Just makes you wonder what we'll see from the XO and PS4 in 4-6 years from now.

Yeah, Kameo, CoD2 and Condemned made the 360 launch very worthwhile. Kameo showed off possibilities with hordes of enemies. CoD2 was gorgeous and Condemned showed off an impressive use of 5.1.

Perfect Dark 0 was a steaming pile.

CoD2 and King Kong really wowed me at launch. Not that King Kong is good or anything.

Still sounds pretty good but I really prefer to play single player games, maybe with some co-op campaign mixed in. The only competitive MP I enjoyed in the past decade is Bad Company 2, and I'll be giving BF4 a chance. Titanfall not having any SP at all probably kills it for me personally, but I can respect them focusing on what the fans would want and not tacking on a generic solo campaign.

Me, too. That and Condemned.

Then 7 years later, I got PD:Zero for $3 and remembered why I got rid of it in the first place.

I don't see that happening. If it is, it's going to happen at launch. Not a year later when the PS4 is killing them in sales.

I think both systems will sell like hotcakes at launch, even with the XO being $100 more. Even assuming PS3s sell out faster, you know BB, Frys, and GameStop employees will say whatever they can to get disappointed parents who missed out on getting a PS3 to buy their excess XO stock instead, assuming there is any ("yeah, it's $100 more, but the games are all practically the same, and it has Kinect! That's fun for the whole family, not just your 13 year old who comments on IGN articles.")

So, that said, reducing the price mid to late 2014 makes a lot more sense, so they can maximize profits at launch.

Same here but I fell to the XO side... more or less. At this point much of it is laziness: I don't want to lose my gamertag, gamerscore, developed friends list, subscription to Live. I know how everything works. I also hold out an eternal hope that Kinect will get a fitness game that works well.

The main reason though is I found myself playing more CoD than anything else and XO will be the CoD machine.

But dammit, I want to be excited like a kid at Christmas and it isn't happening.
