I used to listen to their podcast sometimes. If I remember right (their story was) they are completely independent from the retail side. Their layout is clean, paper is nice and glossy, they get lots of scoops because of their connection to GS, and I find the reviews to be legit...or at least there are plenty of bad scores.

If you happen to be in or near a store, you should be able to take a look at the current edition and decide what you think.

re: PS4: All the latest updates, such as...umm...uhh...hmm...

Are there any special Launch Editions or whatever games for the PS4?

Is this current list of launch title accurate?
  • Driveclub — Exclusive, Launch title
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall — Exclusive, Launch title
  • The Witness — 2013, Possible launch title
  • Watch Dogs — Launch title
  • Battlefield 4 — 2013, Possible launch title
  • Knack — Exclusive, Launch title

I would only be interested in Driveclub as long as it is more arcade than sim...

Maybe Watch Dogs, not sure what non-exclusive games I will get for each system....

Driveclub is a 1st person simulator according to IGN... guess I'll try the demo first.

Knack looks like a PSN game, not retail.

Killzone looks really good, but it will depend on the controller and the demo.

That's certainly my understanding. They don't want to step on GT's toes at all. This is much more of an arcade racer with a huge social component.

Driveclub is free for the first year for PSN+ subscribers...or at least the "PSN+ Edition" is, which could be anything from simply a digital version to some sort of free-to-play model.

I'm sure the PS Plus edition will be some barebones version, basically a glorified demo.

I have heard that it will be, but have no idea. It would be nice if the dualshocks and sony headsets worked with the PS4. There isn't any good reason that they shouldn't.

Edit to add: Not that there is a good reason the 360 controlers won't work on the One.

I wouldn't say so much "new information" but from the start up to the 1:15 mark they talk about the hardware and pretty much confirm the PS4 is more powerful than the XO.

Xbox Live has made you cynical.

See in spoiler below (because it's so long) a list of full games you would have for "free" if you had subscribed to PSN+ from June 2012 to May 2013 and locked in licences on any or all of them. Since May, the free full games have included Uncharted 3, Deus Ex, LittleBigPlanet Karting and Saint's Row 3.

I personally find the list below a little bit overwhelming, and I'm pretty sure I could game for the year on a PSN+ subscription alone. Also...tons of discounts, some crazy ones like $20-30 off of full retail games. You want people to go digital? This is how you do it.

Anyway, I wouldn't find it the least bit shocking if Driveclub were free and it were a substantial version.

Spoiler:

Super Street Fighter IV (Arcade Edition)
Little Big Planet 2
Demon’s Souls

So we'll have a free to play shooter thing and Driveclub? That's neato.

I know you're joking, but that's actually precisely what they are.

You don't really own them, but as long as you have PS+ and you locked in a license, you have them to play.

In principle, I'm not crazy about the setup, but in application, it's such a great value, it's hard to complain. Cognitive dissonance abounds.

Did they ever figure out a way to let you buy a game you previously got free?

It's not cognitive dissonance. It's a subscription vs. ownership model. You're getting a host of benefits with PS+, and one of them is the continued use of these games. You don't pay per game, you pay per month. If Microsoft had offered something like this with the XO, I wouldn't have had such an issue with it. My problem is when they want us to pay the price of ownership for a game, but we never really own it. A monthly sub that lets us have unlimited gaming? Sign me up! That's what I'm hoping Gaikai is.

Out of all the games on that list, I think I have all of them in my account expect for Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, as it was on Plus during one of my lapses.

Oh, I get it. It's just that I've always been more of a "collector" than a "renter", so I have to get past that.

My hope against hope is that they figure out a way for us to have access to our PS3 games via Gaikai if we have our PS3 disk in the machine. I know that one is unlikely, but I can dream of virtual backward compatibility.

I would love more info on Gaikai in general. If it's $20 a month for all you can eat gaming of their entire digitized library, sign me up for a lifetime sub.

And let's not forget the discounts you get with Plus as well. Anything you buy, you own outside of Plus.

Sony took a program that was considered something of a joke when they launched it, and have turned it into one of the best things out of this generation of gaming. They took what would have been a very tough pill to swallow in charging for online play, and made it a moot point.

So long as they continue to put worthwhile content on Plus, it'll blow Live out of the water.

I wonder how much of that is them wanting to ease their way into it...test the system's ability to handle various loads before overpromising.

re: PS4: All the latest updates, such as...umm...uhh...hmm...

If Sony were really smart, they'd offer a free month long beta to all PS4 users. That way, they can test the load on their system, and get users hooked at the same time. At the end of the month, if the offered library of games was really comprehensive, and the system worked the way it should, I bet they'd get a lot of subs.

Man, Sony should hire me to handle this.

re: PS4: All the latest updates, such as...umm...uhh...hmm...

If they did a month long beta, it'd be for PS+ subscribers if anything.

I think a subscription service would be the way to go, while people may pay for a couple $20 games a year, for $20/month and say they had a couple million subscribers that's at least $40m/month they'd be making versus selling a $20 game here or there. Perceived value.

Plus they wouldn't have to give anybody the software they bought on PSN from the PS3
