Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
I've been an XBOX Live member for over 10 years. I've been a PS+ member for just over a year or so. I enjoy the hell out of the "free" games I get with PS+ but overall I am far more satified with the features the XBOX provides. PS+ is a glorified rental service but if if they didn't provide the free games they do I would of just played them anyway eventually thanks to GameFly, the superior rental service.
XBOX Live reminds me more of a cell phone provider like Verizon. People bitch and moan about the cost but if you want to be connected to family, friends or just connected virtually you have to pay. Both services have their ups and downs but if want to get the most out of the console you spent hundreds on then you might be asked to spend a bit month to month to get the most out of that system. It's not the end of the damn world and shouldn't be what makes or breaks a system. You want to bust the balls of a console maker then focus on manufacturing issues that caused the RROD or security issues that the PS3 faced.
Why is the online service on the WiiU free still? Because it's utterly fucking useless at this point. All the demos I wanted came out right out of the gate and as much as I want to defend the system at times Nintendo greenlit an online service without obviously knowing what the fuck to do with it.

I think both the systems have faced "security issues" over the past few years. Anyways, looking forward to seeing what is brought to the table this evening.

PlayStation Meeting 2013: it’s finally (almost) here! The festivities begin today, Wednesday February 20th starting at 6:00pm Eastern Time (3:00pm Pacific Time)….and you’ll be able to watch live right here from this humble PlayStation.Blog post. Set those bookmarks and timers!
If you simply must leave the warm, soothing embrace of PlayStation.Blog, you’ll also be able to follow along live on PlayStation.com, inside the virtual world of PlayStation Home, and even via your PS3’s Xross Media Bar — just look for it under the “What’s New” section.

What elements of PS+ should be otherwise free? The games? MS doesn't offer that with any tier of Xbox Live. Are there other PS+ exclusives I'm not aware of that have traditionally been free on the other consoles?
As it is, Xbox Live is the outlier here. Nintendo and Sony have both been free to play, only MS has forced you to pay just to play with other people.

The biggest problems with the service are ads (why do I get ads on a premium service?), and requiring Gold for services like Netflix. That's beyond absurd.
As long as subs can be found for $35, it's a non-issue for most of us. $3 a month won't break the bank.

The biggest problem with Live are the services that you need to be a Gold member to use. I really need to be a Gold member to use the Youtube application? It's laughable.
I think Sony is in a great position right now and will probably have an easy time stealing over some of the Xbox customers.

My problem with Live is, at any given time one of my friends (or myself) will not have it, sub ran out, etc. So online game sessions with friends are hit or miss.
With PSN everyone can play, at any time.

I've read rumors of Streaming games from online service -> ps4, and also streaming ps4 games -> Vita. The ps4 -> Vita streaming would be pretty awesome. I just wonder how they'd solve the 1 fewer trigger (per side) problem.

Cross party chat, invites, messages, and the like are clear winners in MS's corner. The integration and ease of use is just seamless. That Live fee does go towards their online police force and system updates (for better or worse).

Pete Hines (VP of Bethesda) tweeted this a few hours ago

Off to NYC for the Sony event tonight. Interested to see how much of what I know I can now talk about. :-)

I'm surprised concrete news hasn't leaked about the event tonight. The ability to keep this a secret is pretty impressive.

However, given the Gamestop tweet, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some alpha footage shown (game doesn't come out until early 2014).
