Lair sucked a fat one. And PS4 adopters are far better off during the launch of this console than the beginning of the PS3's life. I waited a few months to get my first PS3 and was stuck playing Def Jam Icon (traded quickly) and whatever other crap I could scrape together. If we see 33 titles released by the end of December then I will be happy despite only being able to afford maybe 3 of them.

Right, I don't really like the timed exclusive thing either that's clearly just from throwing money at studios. Although it does make things a bit more interesting given the similarity of the two platforms, making third party games stand out less between the two companies.
I mean what did game companies do before, just pick and choose which they liked developing on more? These days it seems like the money factor is more in our faces.

Publishers fought back when the Genesis came out, and Nintendo had to back down in its stance for the SNES.

In the days of the NES, Nintendo required exclusivity. In order to get the game certified by Nintendo, it had to be made only for the NES. This is why the Sega Master System failed...well that and it just wasn't very good.
Publishers fought back when the Genesis came out, and Nintendo had to back down in its stance for the SNES.

Poor Genji... everyone remembers the infamous crab demo but nobody remembers the game (for good reason).
The other advantage Sony has, which is also evident in that side by side comparison, is the overwhelming lead it has in Japan. Sure MS paid big bucks for something like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon and the like but by the end of the console's life it was pretty one sided. And while you can say it's mainly a bunch of similar JRPGs and licensed Dynasty Warrior clones, we also got stuff like Demons Souls, Valkyria Chronicles (seriously Sega, where the heck is 3 for the US Vita???), and, well, a bunch of JRPGs.

I know most of you have written this on off as kiddie fodder (not that there's anything wrong with that), but the new trailer looks pretty good. Love the music...not sure about the voice though...pictured something more like Clank.

That's pretty much my reaction. The game looks like something I'd really be into, but the voice work, especially Knack himself... This trailer has me certain that I'll get it but maybe not at launch.

and their advantages with their online network and controller have been matched, exceeded or rendered meaningless.
They've also acted like toolbags throughout this launch and have utterly abandoned their current gen console over the past four years (as shown in photo earlier).

Alright, Knack is now on the radar.

I'm still pretty sure that Microsoft is paying Capcom and EA just to keep them from porting their games to the PS4, which is really kind of shitty and certainly doesn't advance gaming in any significant way (besides maybe forcing people to buy an XO they wouldn't otherwise get). Yeah, it's a timed exclusive, but so what? I'd prefer if they made their own games and let outside publishers put their games out on whatever consoles they saw fit.

Modnation Racers sold a million copies. All-Stars Battle Royale sold 500k. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time sold 240k. Heavenly Sword sold 1.5 million. Infamous 2 sold 1.6 million. MLB 13 sold 500k. Ratchet and Clank: All For One sold 1.1 million. Total copies sold for all those studios, all that manpower, etc = 6.5 million.
Halo 4 sold 8.4 million and a ton of DLC.
Yes, variety is the spice of life, and if that's what you're after, you clearly have an option. But to say Microsoft doesn't care and has abandoned the 360/has no interest in making games? Please. They make huge games that bring in a ton of money, and instead of gambling on creating/buying studios for smaller titles, they sign exclusivity deals. Numbers have been crunched. Cost analysis has been performed. They understand what they're doing as far as making games.

"Huge" games gobbled up by teenagers year after year are leading the gaming industry down a very narrow path. I loved Mario games growing up and still do but I'm glad that the industry saw more than just cashing in on that franchise. MS is willing to beat their dick in the dirt with more of the same as long as 8 million keep buying it. If it is what makes you happy then game away.

re: PS4: Games you don't want, but it's $100 less! (11/15)
If those huge games go away, so does the audience. If COD is canceled as some kind of grand noble gesture, that audience is not going to move over to Little Big Planet. They're going to the garage to huff paint.

All the gaming companies are willing to "beat their dick in the dirt with more of the same as long as 8 million keep buying it." No reason to put the onus on MS when Sony, Nintendo, EA, Activision, whomever are all going to do the same.
That's a lot of dicks in the dirt... or something.

Hell, you've got people in this very thread celebrating Knack and all its wonderful diversity that it brings to the Sony portfolio of games, and in the same breath saying "However, that's not a $60 game. I'll pick it up used."

In my opinion, the last 3 iterations of Call of Duty or even Saints Row IV are not 60 dollar games nor did I pay 60 for any of them. Xbox has banked on having the lionshare of the audience for these "huge" games and have lived off them. However, if more people go the route of PS4 then this time you will see an increase in sales of shooters on the PS4 as well as games like Infamous SS selling more copies.

Wanting diversity is the reason I'm probably not going to grab Knack on day one. I'm not buying multiple racing games, multiple fighting games, or multiple FPSes in November either. Geez, and the Mario game for the Wii U will probably come out in Nov. too.

I feel like I covered that in my post. I'm interested in Knack, but Sony is releasing two other action/platformers that honestly look better leading up to it (one of which drops within a week or two of the PS4 launch), and it probably comes out the same month as the new Mario game. Buying the budget-priced Puppeteer and the new Ratchet and Clank brand new will run me $70 total; considering that I'm more interested in those anyway, why would I spend $60 for one game that, as good as it looks, doesn't strike me as quite as compelling?
Celebrating diversity, to my mind, isn't buying 3 or 4 similar games in a very short period of time. In no way am I saying "no, never!" to Knack; I just won't be very likely to buy it at launch. I put my money where my mouth is too; I'm only picking up one FPS in November too.
This November is shaping up to have me buying more games in one month than I ever have before, so I want to cover as many genres as possible.
