If they allow for subscription to individual channels almost like they were apps, I would be all about that and would probably subscribe to 5-6 channels (HBO, BBC, AMC, Comedy, CNN, maybe a few others).

I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay on a per episode basis for anything other than Sports, and even then, I'd prefer a reasonably priced season pass. NBA's is reasonable, I think, but NFL is absurd.

No real features announced yet, and I hope they don't get too far into it, if at all, at Gamescom...especially since it seems so US centric.

Not enough details. Nothing to get excited for. I still don't think we'll see ala carte for many, many years. Honestly, with Burn Notice(USA, also watch White Collar) ending as well as Breaking Bad(AMC + Walking Dead), I'd be down just for an ESPN pack, Discovery and maybe Disney to go with the core networks. I could be fine just buying a pass for White Collar and Walking Dead.

I think his point was that it wasn't smart to infer anything from the data and that I was only doing so for the purposes of my own affirmation. And then he went on to compare current gen consoles with huge install bases to the ones that haven't come out yet and to one that is almost wholly irrelevant (Wii) to make a point.

If this were true, the PS2 would still be the dominant platform. Current gen will continue to lead through this year and maybe even next, but the lines will converge as they always do. To say this trend will continue for "a long time" would be a mistake, as video games aren't comparable to movies as a market.

Saying the PS2 would still be dominant now is silly. But how long did it take Sony to get PS2-like figures for games sold for PS3 games? I honestly don't know, but I'm sure the data is out there.

edit: You're right. I can't speak for ChuckD. But I can say that I'm pretty sure 360+X1 games will sell better than PS3+PS4 games for at least another year or so, with 360 and PS3 being in the majority, even after these new consoles launch. That means MS gets more money. I would think that's what Chuck was getting at. Microsoft wins as long as either of their consoles continue making more money than Sony's consoles combined. I don't think you're going to see the tens of millions of users (combined) upgrade in the next two years, but they'll still want new games to play.

Generational turnover is much different in the PS ecosystem than it is in the Xbox ecosystem, as they continue to make exclusive software, so it gets complicated.

But to answer your question directly: PS3 launched at the end of 2006...there were 3 PS2 titles in the top 10 for 2007 and no PS3 titles...there were no PS2 titles in the top 10 for 2008.

And I'm saying Sony fans could have said the same thing in 2007 but it would have been a very very shortsighted view, because they were getting their asses kicked.

It's also irrelevant and a complete side discussion from what I was trying to show the PS4 thread, which was "How is the PS4 actually doing in relation to the X1".

What I meant was, at which point did a PS3 title (exclusive or otherwise) sell anywhere in the range of the number of units of some of the top 50 or so PS2 games? My memory is terrible, and I'm not sure how to find that kind of statistic. I'm not trying to prove any point here. This is more of a side discussion, because I'm curious at what point the PS3 was starting to reach real popularity among gamers.

Not really. My view is that, in 2007, Sony probably needed that PS2 revenue to improve upon PS3s lackluster launch. Microsoft will likely need to do the exact same thing; all 360 revenue will need to go into anything they can do to improve the perception/catalog of the X1. It's business. So much like the PS2, they'll do what they can to keep 360 owners spending money on 360 games/stuff while they increase awareness and install-base of the X1.

Agreed. Since the list you posted had games from all consoles, current and next-gen, that left it open to such interpretation.

I see...still a complicated question. Cross platform titles generally have sold just below 360 since 2008 or so. The games that I think you're probably looking for are exclusives like GT5, GOW3 and Uncharted 2. The PS3 didn't really hit its stride until about 2009-2010, and even then it never hit PS2 levels. But PS2 was arguably the most successful console of all time, so it's probably not fair to compare.

We're saying the same thing, or at a minimum, we agree. I'm just saying that the relative success of PS3 and 360 isn't relevant to the point I was making in the first place. I'm sure the 360 continuing to do well next year will make some folks feel better, but it will be a short term high. Hopefully MS will spend more of that money making new and interesting content and less keeping content off other platforms.

Which is why I posted the analysis before the list. The supporting data was intended to be sort of a footnote to what I had to say about it.

I think they're doing this with Project Spark and some other interesting things, but I totally agree. If they're learning anything from Sony, I hope it's that the money needs to go into developing the games. More Alan Wake, please!!
